I'm going to start calling Nick, "Ross", the next time I see him. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I'm guessing that block v. bias construction was a major factor. If you search the forums for those terms, it'll give you some good food for thought. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Does it strike you as ironic that we (none of us Southerners, unless I am mistaken) are arguing about this? Now, who's passions are stirred by this issue? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Um, dude? I have yet to see a Southerner chime into this thread caring. It seems like maybe you're the one having trouble getting over it. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

If there were English flying their flag in Boston, no one would care. That's because everyone's gotten over it. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I should hope so. Otherwise, you'll have a hack of a mess on your hands when the war ends. If you look at history, in the last 18 months or so of WWII the strategies were dominated by considerations of the postwar repercussions. WWI leaders, on the other hand, had a bit less foresight, and a significantly messier peace. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Isn't that the underlying viewpoint of the entire Bretton Woods structure? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I'm sure that there were several Englishmen who felt the same about George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Paul Revere... The difference is that the English really do appear to have gotten over it. I haven't seen any English posters getting up in arms about it, anyway. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

What does the exercise of First Amendment freedoms have to do with the Confederacy? I'm not quite following you here. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I whole heartedly agree. As a first generation immigrant (Germany), it makes no sense to me that people are hung up on fighting a 130+ year old lost cause. The civil war is over. The CSA lost. Get used to it. The irony here is stunning. You agree that we should all have strong feelings about the confederacy, but at the same time want people to get over events of 130 years ago? So, uh, which of those did you want? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I've relocated this from the BASE forum. Comments? I know there's going to be a couple people here who want to say something witty... -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Don't forget the Access, if you can lay your hands on one on this side of the pond. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I've split this off the "Hey, Manbird" thread, as it is a separate topic. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Ok, so it looks like Russel is going to come out to Twin the weekend of the 9th and 10th, and stay until the weekend of the 16th and 17th. He's planning on working toward making a dry landing. I'm hopeful he'll make it this week, but we'll see how the testing and trials go. If anyone is going to be in town this week (weekdays especially), and willing to help with the logistics (getting him over the rail, getting platform set up and taken down, shuttling wheelchair and clothes to the bottom, etc), I'd really appreciate it. I expect there will be sufficient folks around on the weekends, but I'd love to hear from anyone who is going to be here then, as well. Even if manpower during the week is low, we ought to be able to do a fair amount of fabrication and testing. So, anyone going to be in town and want to help out? Please? I'll provide food and beer in the evenings. PM, email, or post here if you know you'll be around during this time. Thanks! -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

U.S. Marines versus United Auto Workers Union

Do those driving foreign cars have to sit in the back of the bus, too? I wonder if the UAW will insitute separate water fountains, as well? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com -
Any way can hesitate. The best we can do is play the odds, and try to miminize the chances of hesitation (or whatever else we are trying to avoid). -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

The tailgate should be placed at the highest possible point (usually just at the top of the control lines, where they attach to the canopy). Placing the tailgate lower can encourage tailgate hangups on PCA's. As Avery noted, this means that the tailgate should be placed after the DBS, and matched to them. If you use the rubber band attachment, be very sure that the rubber band you use to attach can't catch/entangle and hang up the rubber band you use to close the tailgate. Personally, I prefer masking tape when I haven't got an installed tailgate. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

This method can reduce PC hesitations on go and throws. By having the PC more unfolded, you can greatly reduce the chance of it staying in a bundle and doing one of those weird "end of extended bridle" hesitations. In theory, using this technique or a variant on it can allow you to place the PC in the air, and thereby greatly reduce orbiting (which often begins with the impetus provided by the PC toss). Since the PC is already open, it pretty much can't drop into the burble (because it's bigger than the burble at these short or non-delays). So, used well, the theory is that you can get the PC pulling straight above your back, with no chance for orbiting, and thus reduce off heading. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I split this off the "solo BASE" thread, as it appears to be developing into a separate technical discussion. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I think space is right on, here. The important thing is the drag that a PC makes, rather than it's measured diameter. The manufacturer ought to be working from that sort of parameter, so "Asylum 42" or whatever, is more a model number (based on the cut size of the material) than a statement of the finished diameter of the PC. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Huh? What's trolling about that? Looks cool to me. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Be careful of that "open" technique (or similar techniques) with delays. There's a guy on the list who took too long with the ZP open on his handheld PC. The drag can throw you unstable. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Have you ever been to the party after a big BASE event? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Two thoughts: 1) I'm using a filemaker database to track jumps. I built it a couple years ago, and I throw in new stuff from time to time. It can even hold still images and video fromt the jump (or the party afterward, if you prefer). 2) I also keep paper logs for many reasons (like I can fill them out wherever I am). I'll attach my paper page to this post as a .doc file. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
