Not even close. Hannes has been BASE jumping longer than most of the people on these forums have been skydiving. He's also verifiably jumped all of the above wingsuits. He's known, respected, and recognized by BASE jumpers the world over. That's about as far from a troll as I can imagine. Now, who are you, Mr. Policeman? Oh, wait, maybe I just ought to do an IP search... -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Hannes has posted some thoughts from his initial V-1 experiences in the BASE forum. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Perhaps this is a step toward a "no slider only" canopy? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I've got a very nice Glock 21 (.45 acp). It's my favorite.

There's a "not really a" joke in US BASE circles: "How do you tell a Canadian BASE jumper?" "He's got a white stash bag, for camouflage." -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I recommend reading the other thread on PC sizing. Depending on design and construction, a "47" could have more drag than a "48". -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

If you couldn't jump your wingsuit anymore would you still jump?
TomAiello replied to Viking's topic in Wing Suit Flying
The PF tracking suit. Good trackers in those suits can hang with average classic flyers. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com -
Another thought: I think he ought to be on the list (probably the bottom section) somewhere as a cautionary tale. I know of at least 3 other loads done in a similar fashion (skydive to the top, then repack and jump the object). Having his story somewhere on the list acts as a good heads up to people planning such a load, so that they have a better idea of potential dangers. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

TomAiello replied to Viking's topic in Wing Suit Flying
If you get a good tracking suit and really focus on your track, you ought to be able to flock with folks in Classics. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com -
Pulling the plug on Speakers Corner

People would want to know why the mods hadn't read "that post" during the two hour waiting period, and deleted or modified it. Basically, I'd expect you'd see people getting upset if the mods didn't read every post within the time limit, prior to posting. That's a whole lot of extra work. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com -
BASE PC's are available in a variety of different configurations. You can custom order with almost any conceivable handle (or none). -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Why not put him on the "jumpers outside the sport" section? I see some strong parallels with at least one other person who is in that section (jumping from a plane, intending a challenging stunt, not really a BASE jump, you get the idea). -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

There is a post here about High Velocity brand armor. It appears to be significantly cheaper than the Dianese armor, and the manufacturer claims better results for long term use. Definitely worth checking it out. You might also want to search this forum for a couple other threads about body armor. In terms of knee/shin guards, I've been quite pleased with my Dianese pants, of which I believe a counterpart is also available from High Velocity at a lower price. I've also got a couple pairs of Fox (that's the mountain biking/motorcycle folks, not the BASE canopy) knee pads that have built in shin guards. They're low profile enough to go under pants, but still very protective. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

In that case I'd have to say the way the bridle is folded in the pc would have to be a determining factor. Perhaps. Personally, I think the biggest factor is the way the bridle is stowed (inside the PC at all). The best fix I've seen is a secondary bridle pocket that stages the bridle as the PC moves to bridle extension. I believe this is now standard on Morpheus rigs. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

This newspaper report is translated and posted in the BLiNC thread. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

In my experience, it's actually direction of throw that causes the problem. Pitch forward, into the relative wind, and you end up with the PC trying to inflate throught the "flailing wad of bridle". I don't know how much a typical wingsuit pilot thinks about direction of PC toss, but it's definitely worth considering. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

If you are trying to keep people away, starting a large discussion on an internet forum, with photos, the name of the place, and links to video probably isn't the wisest course of action. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I've got some video, but I'll try to draw up a diagram and start a new thread. Probably too busy to get to that today, though. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Well, I won't exactly be heading there. But I'm pretty sure I'll be here most of that time. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

This is just about the most re-posted thing ever, in the BASE forum. If you search the forum you can find discussion, comments by the jumper, feedback from the internet, responses to that feedback, etc. I'd recommend using the search function. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

You'd need two side by side pendulators, and some kind of spinning harness (like divers use to train). THen, it would be pretty easy. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

If you dig around, you can find Nick's post on this. He suggested that we all take out life insurance policies that benefit a "BASE Memorial Foundation." As folks go in, the money is used to build additional floors onto a building (presumably with some kind of memorial to the jumper at "their" floor). The building just keeps growing... -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Have you experienced any fabric burning of the type Kevin describes? Kevin, do you think that folding the "ears" (rather than rolling) would reduce this problem? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

It's probably better to pop the toggles to a point well past half brakes. From deep brakes to half brakes will still cause a surge. You ought to be bringing the toggles to the same point as the brakes held them (i.e. to deep brakes), to avoid the surging (into the ground, object, etc). Then let up slowly and flare from where ever the toggles are when you get to the ground. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I have learned that the CR packing video is still available from Asylum Designs. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
