Yeah, Mattb, your're right. I wouldn't want to undersestimate Marquette like Kentucky.....hahahahahahahhahahaha...I had one hell of a time down on Mass Street tonight (what was the score???)..I KNOW that Chris (jawhawkjumper) and Paul (jumphog) know exactly what I'm talking about... I was down on Mass from the time I woke up this afternoon until 9:45 or so. and it was the best time ever here in Lawrence. I hope there wasn't tooo much money placed upon you pool there Matt :P Austin ROCK CHALK JHAWK, GO KU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm pretty sure that I didn't say anything at all about Marquette being an easy game, considering all that I said was "next up, Marquette." That means that they are the next game matt.

Hey Paul, I was down on campus within like 10 minutes of the end of the game and it was a crazy fun time...can't wait to see what it could end up being like. Next up, Marquette!!!!!! ROCK CHALK JAYHAWK!!!!!!!!!! Austin

I've been looking around on the web for TRV 18's and I guess that it's now discontinued and replaced by the TRV 19. Does anybody know anything about this newer model and how it looks for skydiving??? Thanks. Austin

What kind of flight performance increases would one see by H-modding a Safire?? would it be comparable to downsizing?? Thanks, Austin

I am flying a Safire (original) and have had no problems what-so-ever landing the canopy. I was a little anxious on my first jump with it having heard all the stories about "Safires are soooo hard to land blah blah blah." If you fly the canopy throughout the entire landing, feeling what it is doing and reacting to it rather than just saying "I'm at XXX feet, stab the toggles" the canopy (any canopy for that matter) will treat you much better in the landing department. Do a search for the posts that Billvon (??) made about flying your canopy throughout the landing, it is explained very well in there. Definately demo both of those canopies though. Just my unqualified opinion. Austin

Jimbo, Was the Cobalt 170 demo that you tried yellow with blue diamonds?? That's the one I had and I had one rather "brisk" opening that was hard enough that it actually slightly loosened my left leg strap and induced a left turn. I told a friend of mine about my experience on that canopy and he said that a guy at his dropzone had the same canopy and had opening issues with it also. Austin

I demoed a Cobalt 170 when I had around 75 jumps or so. CobaltDan told me that it was the appropriate size for me (I owned a Tri 190 at the time and I'm about 210-215 with gear). I found the Cobalt to be very easy to fly. Also, Since jumping that 170, I have jumped (not many times) a Sabre 170 and a Diablo 170. Both of these canopies felt signicantly faster than the Cobalt, just as Dan assured me. Currently I'm jumping a Safire 189 (~174ish) and that's just because the deal on a used Cobalt 170 fell through. Remember that the "light" recomended loading on a Cobalt is 1.2:1, I jumped that one at about 1.25:1 and didn't think it was that big of a deal. I say go for it, have fun and decide for yourself if you want to do it again. Austin

Collegiate Skydiving and a Military Academy
Austin replied to bps's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Bryan, I went through the cadet freefall course a couple of summers ago when they let the ROTC kids (I was attending the USMMA) and had a blast. It's a really great program. I think that the session that I was in they had you jumping with our class even though you already had tons of jumps because you had just gotten there or something. I also have run into a base jumper at our DZ, Skydive Kansas that I think said he's done some base jumps with you. All in all, a great program, glad I was able to participate in it (even though I'd done a few static line jumps). Austin -
Those are not winglets...they are vortex generators. Vortex generators are used on some airplane wings, but I'd have to look it up in one of my textbooks to tell you why. But my guess here is that they create vortices that have countering rotation to the wing tip vortices created by the flight of the canopy. Just a guess though. Austin

Having never jumped a Spectre, here's my opinion of the Tri 190 I jumped for 75-80 jumps after I first got my license. I never had any of the "hard" openings that people say Tri's are prone to, in fact, the first few times I jumped it, I was starting to have thoughts about cutting it away it seemed to take so long to open. After I got used to it, I loved the way it opened. In addition, that canopy was a breeze to pack. What I didn't like about it was that I feel that it has very little glide (which is definately reinforced after jumping a cobalt, diablo (another 7 cell by Aerodyne only eliptical), sabre and my current safire). Also, I don't feel that the canopy had as much flare as any of those other canopies that I just mentioned. I stood up pretty much all of my landings on the Tri, but a lot of the time my feet would hurt from landing, and no I don't just get to a certain height and flare the exact same way every jump. I varied my timing and flaring technique many times trying to get softer landings out of the Tri and never seemed to find how to get them. Now I jump my Safire and I like it much better. However, it should be pointed out that my Safire will bite me harder than my Tri would have in the event that I screw something up in my opinion (hasn't happened yet). So there's my Tri review. I recently put a Bonehead chincup on my mindwarp. Has anyone here cut the excess plastic that sticks out of the end of the ratchet system?? If so, how much do you leave to stick out? Also, does this cause any problems with putting the chincup back onto the plastic strips if you take the chincup off on one side? Austin

CANOPY RECOMMENDATIONS FOR NOVICE SWOOPER
Austin replied to trigger's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Bob, I'm about 210-215 geared up and I jumped a Cobalt 170 early this summer and loved it. Since then, I have jumped two other 170's (at the time I owned at Tri190, now have a Safire 189), a Sabre 170 and a Diablo 170. I felt that the Diablo and Sabre were indeed faster canopies as Atair says. The Cobalt was a very fun canopy and was not hard to fly at all in my opinion. Austin -
I see Aggie Dave beat me to replying to that..... I don't know of many products that are "perfect" upon release and need NO modifications down the line. I'm extremely please with the way that Heather and the others at Sunrise took care of me. Austin
