  1. Thank you all for the input...
  2. Hello everyone. I'm hoping to travel to Florida this winter for some warm weather and jumping. I'm looking for a smaller, one-aircraft type DZ with a large landing area and plenty of "outs." I'm content to do two and three ways, and don't mind flying by myself if necessary. Any suggestions are appreciated.
  3. Don't forget your log book! I had a similar number of jumps and was fresh off my A license last year when I planned a trip to Eloy. I mistakenly thought my license would be enough documentation, it's not. I too hail from a medium size DZ in the midwest with one plane, a very manageable number of jumpers in the air at once, with a large LZ an plenty of "outs." I like to pull a bit higher than most, so after completing my recurrency stuff at Eloy, I slotted myself first in last out for my first jump, and notified my instructor that I would be pulling a bit higher. What I didn't realize is that there would be a second plane on the jump run right behind us. I pulled around 4500-5000 ft and landed in their student area and promply got my ass chewed for pulling too high. My point is this. There is a lot of stuff that new jumpers don't know and understand, and adding the dimension of a new DZ with unfamiliar surroundings should be considered carefully, in my opinion. Have fun and fly safe.
  4. I am looking forward to seeing your movie. Just that one clip was truly inspirational.
  5. I think you're still to early in your learning curve to worry about weights, and different jump suits. I would focus on the fundamentals of stability, and fall rate, and basic docking maneuvers. And I would do that with a good coach, or even another more experienced jumper who's willing to help. I try to do drill dives with one other jumper, and focus strictly on fall rate the whole dive (my problem is slowing my fall rate). Maybe focus on 2-ways and then progress to larger formations. You friends will want to include you in larger formations that you are quite possibly not ready for yet. I have a similar experience level and feel like the more I jump, the more I realize how much I don't know. Take it slow, have fun, and be safe.
  6. Assuming I was viewing the correct jumper, it appeared as though you were actually in more of a de-arched position that one would use to slow their fall rate?? Have one of your instructors take a look, hopefully you can fix it without having to mess with weights. That seems like a pain in the ass to me....
  7. Fair enough. Probably best that I continue to observe in silence most of the time anyway. This just happens to be an issue that seems so crystal clear (IMO).
  8. I'm relatively new to these forums. Would Quade, or somebody who knows Quade, please tell me how you can always be on the opposite side of so many issues, that are so clear and obvious to rational people? I've read several threads on various topics, and I just sit in front of my monitor shaking my head in disbelief. I've read enough to know that there isn't anything that anybody could write that will change your mind; I'm just curious who you are? What's your story??
  9. Great story. I'm not sure, but I think your story contains the secrets to repairing much of what's wrong with our nation / economy...
  10. Hello. Attempting to take your advice, I searched the gear section of this site for Protec helmets, and saw 0 listings. Are they just not listed here on this website? And as a follow up question, where do you veteran sky-people suggest I purchase my gear. I'm looking for a fair price, but I don't want to over-pay. I'm also not into doing a whole lot of comparison shopping.
  11. Packing! Definitely packing. It almost caused me to sell my gear and call it quits after two seaons. I'm astounded that there are only two other posts in this thread regarding the same issue. Guess it's not a big deal for most other jumpers.??
  12. Accordion, Piano, and I'm attempting to self-teach the guitar.
  13. I'm curious about the malfunction you described. Was the slider up or down. If down, would a reasonable action be to un-stow the remaining brake toggle, and steer and land with rear risers? I ask this because you mentioned that your canopy was flying fine. I've not had a malfunction that has required a cut-away, but I've always thought I would keep the canopy I know if it's flying correctly, and is controllable. Even if that means I need to use risers in lieu of brakes.
  14. Welcome. I would suggest two books by Brian Germain. The Parachute and It's Pilot, and Transcending Your Fear. The first is more technical. You should be able to read it many times over as you advance in the sport, and continue to learn from it. The second is a bit more abstract, however it is a great "read" for sky divers and non-sky divers alike.
  15. I started at 48 myself. Welcome...
  16. Welcome. Have fun, relax, and learn to pack right away!
  17. Thank you all for the perspective.
  18. To those of you with more experience, that have been following these forums much longer than I: Does it seem like there is an unusually high number of incidents as of late? And if so, what is going on?
