do any other manufacturers or engineers support the speedbag?
riggermick replied to darnknit's topic in Gear and Rigging
Even with well crafted reply like yours it is still a "fuzzy" take on the rules. The 8015b has a few grey areas that can be taken different ways, I know I was the first H/C manufacturer to TSO under 23d and it took neumorous calls to Eleac Puscas (sp?) (was on the technical committee for SAE) to clarifiy some points and even then he wasn't sure on a couple of them and he helped write the damn thing! Mick. -

This is what the standard says, what would you think. 2.1.1 GENERAL: For purposes of this document a parachute assembly normally, but not exclusively, consists of the following major components: b. Deployment control device (sleeve, bag, diaper, or functional equivalent), if used 4.3.4.2 Canopy to be Used With a Single or a Dual Harness Reserve Parachute Assembly (Alternate Test for4.3.4.1): Three drops shall be made with a suspended weight and speed in accordance with 4.3.4.A test vehicle (e.g., a bomb) may be used. The canopy, deployment device (if used), a pilot chute (if used), and riser(s) (if used) shall be tested as a unit. The riser(s), or equivalent, shall be secured to the test vehicle in the same manner that it is intended to attach to the harness. Where easily detachable hardware (such as snap and ring) is intended to attach the canopy or riser(s) to the harness, one of the above drops shall be made with only one attachment engaged to test the cross connector and hardware. Don't forget 4.3.4 Strength test: No material(s) or device(s) that attenuates shock loads and is not an intregral part of the parachute assembly or component being certifed may be used. Wouldn't a "special" bag qualify as an attenuater? Sounds like it to me. Mick. -

John has the patent on a one pin but uses the two pin design origionally by Ted Strong because he feels the two pin is superior. Um he only has a patent on an adjustable loop not a one pin pop top. Stephan Ertler has a patent on a one pin pop top. although it's validity could be questioned. Believe me I've been through this whole ordeal before. Mick. -
Run a forum search, this subject has been disscussed before with some pretty comprehensive replys. Mick.

Right on both counts, well done!! W/L vs trim angle vs brake settings are all used in concert to "de tune" a student canopy. Mick.

BPA sealing method - tacking to packed reserve?
riggermick replied to councilman24's topic in Gear and Rigging
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Was that something built by Hank Ascuitto? I think you are right, I believe the student Nova (?) had such a setup. It was a long time ago. Mick. -

I know!! Spousal unit and myself are re-starting jumping operations this summer, provided the house obligations are out of the way. Mick -

Irregardless, WORD POLICE INFRACTION HERE!!! Terry I hate to bust ya' chops but "irregardless" is NOT a word. It's either regardless or without regard to (sic). No harm ment, it's just that this word drives me nutz.........As you were. Mick. -
And you won't, Because "line dump" is still a pysudo science that has no emprical data to back it up (read no film!!!). Anyone? Mick.

That aside, the speedbag seems like an awful lot of locking stows between my reserve and the freedom it deserves. I wonder if theres a middle-ground solution, like maybe four locking stows, with the reat in a pouch, or even just conventional stows. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Middle 1980's Vectors had four "o" rings and a stow pouch on the free bag. The safety stow was designed to overcome the short comings of this locking stow method. Which begs the question why are they (jump shack) trying to go back in time? There is ample SPECULATION about the evils of line dump but even it's greatist protagonist (John sherman) says that it can't even be captured on film, are we dealing with ST Elmos fire or ball lightning (often talked about but never filmed) here? Any over loaded high speed deployment that causes catastrophic damage would be very easy to blame on the DEMON line dump (the one with no pysical observation of it in action) much like the Salem witch hunts did for (then) unexplained phenomina. Show me the empirical evidence of it's very existence (film of it actually occuring) and I'll start to entertain the validity of the line dump arguement. Mick. Edited to add: This not directed at you Dave, I just used your quote to start my post. Mick. -
As a Rigger during a reserve repack do you re-pack the main?
riggermick replied to fugozzie's topic in Gear and Rigging
Yes it does happen. There is some debate as to what is "under supervision". If a DZ packer is packing a reserve under my supervision it will not be at the DZ and I will be watching. -

Not so. An A/C mechanic doesn't have to have knowledge of the TSO process for the A/C he/ she is working on. A parachute rigger is just like an A/C mechanic in this regard. There is no "book" on the whole current process, most of what is learned is OJT. Mick.

This is dumber than using gear that has bounced! Nothing wrong with using a "bounce" rig, as long as it's airworthy. Just because someone died wearing the rig doesn't mean it's unsafe. This is just the latest embelishment of "skydiver bad juju". It's pointless crap and urban mythology that makes the newer people scared! Stop this nonsense, you're just perpetuating the "myth" of gear "juju". Unless the equipment in question has a defect there is nothing wrong with jumping such a rig. I've done it and so have many friends without consequence. Think before you speak. Mick.

There is a small pocket with the TSO label on it located on the inside of the pin protector flap. What size (R-??.??) is it? That will make it easier to figure out what canopies it can hold. Mick.

I thought you were working on becoming more eliquent? Mick. -
Sounds like mystery guest is doing research on reserve deployment devices, I wonder if it's for a science project or or is he trying break someones patent? Or perhaps trying to get around existing road blocks to use new technology (read:Skyhook) for company/ indidual he represents? Does explain the annonimity angle. Enquiring minds want to know!! Identify yourself Sir! and let's have a meaningfull discussion on exactly what it is you want to know. We can probably help. Really. Mick.

QuoteIn general, canopies using flares are less common than those with direct line attachment. But both are considered acceptable in skydiving. I'd like to dig a little further into the issue to learn more, because there are some features that seem like they might make canopies with flares slightly less reliable. The main reason flares came back in to vogue was a patent infringement judgement against Mike Fury and his then company Django (later Glide Path) by Steve Snyder and his company Para Filte. Snyder held the patent in direct line attachment and many companys payed him a royalty to use the technology, Mike didn't want to pony up and was conseqently sued. When he lost the suit and folded Django, glide path rose from the ashes and started using Dominia (SP?)Jalberts old flare design from the Para Foil accuracy canopy. As far as problems with flares go, they are few and far between VS how many jumps have been made on canopies with flares. I use Amigo 134's for my rigs and used them during drop testing with excellent results. Mick.

Hey I'm all for dialogue! Care to elaborate, mystery person? About the New "problems" I for one am curious. Mick. I see I'm still apparently not afforded the same courtisy of identification and experience about you as you are about me, pity. It makes it so much easier to to have an intelligent conversation when one knows who/ what (company or individual) one is communicating with.

Dear mystery guest, The Reflex was drop tested in 1995 and passed all of it's certification, even pilot chutes that came off at weird angles worked just fine (BTW the Reflex was approved with or without the Catapult, it was actually double dropped (twice the amount of drops req)). Don't take "everything" off the Jump Shack FAQ as gospel, they have a vested intrest in showing their competitors in a less than flattering light. At least that's been my personal experience. Going back to MA1 reserve pilot chutes is like throwing out 25 years of technilogical progress in reserve deployment design. The MA1 is a great "snagger" the only way to improve on it's "snagability' is to sew fish hooks all over it. That's not to say it's no good and doesn't work, it does!! It also has more snag points more than any modern incarnation of a reserve pilot chute. Too many people died due to hung up MA1's that's why things are the way they are today, it's called progress. Can't say I've heard of too many folk going in due to "inverted reserve pilot chutes", especially when compared to MA1 snags. Your thoughts? Mick. BTW my bio is posted for all to see, you know who I am may I have the same courtsiy?

Hell give a date snd I'll update both of you on how this shit works, minor change my ass. Mick.

Some personal bio info please. Who are you? What is your experience? And what what is the specfic nature of your complant? Most who post here like to know to whom they are talking to and why. Just common courtisy. Mick.
