I agree with the IS. For most of what I shoot, a slightly tighter FOV than the gopro wide setting is best. The "medium" setting matches my .55X on my cx150 pretty well, but at the tighter field of view the lack of IS is much more noticeable and makes the video pretty undesirable. Currently using CX150 on active stabilization with a .55 for my main, and gopro 3black wide as my backup.

Best Current Sony - Compatible with Hypeye D-Pro?
Zlew replied to Scrumpot's topic in Photography and Video
Apparently they also made changes to the programing/interface. I have an adapter and it was a no go for one of the new BOSS models (540)I picked up this year. I sent it in to Trunk to take a look, and he said they have changed things such that the current hypeye will not work with it at all. As far as I know, even with the right port, the new sonys won't work with a hypeye. -
light (under 9 oz) and 300 bucks new.... could be interesting if the quality is anything close to the 10-22.

Freefly Bungee: is it really necessary?
Zlew replied to E.Byrd's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
When I took it off others... I don't remember specifically. With my own rigs, I have done it with and without rings. I can say with rings it seems more easy to do. -
Freefly Bungee: is it really necessary?
Zlew replied to E.Byrd's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I've taken rigs off of 2 people who said that very statement. I had them put their rigs on, tightened their straps to jump ready...and took their rigs off of them (to their surprise). IMO, fitting the rig correctly and/or keeping everything tight will not keep keep your legs straps from being able to slide up in the right conditions. Your legs taper, moving something from a thick area to a thinner one has physics in it's favor. -
I keep almost everything. Photos- Stored on a home server built with Raid 1 arrays- 1st level of backup. Home server is backed up onto an external HD- 2nd layer, I use Carbonite for off site-3rd layer and protection against fire/theft. For Videos, it is the same except for the 3rd layer off site. I have a few edited vids that are on Carbonite, but the raw footage is only on the server.

Other than $, the only other thing I'd point out to take into consideration is if you are at a drop zone, and at a comfort level to be able to do back to backs safely. Not all DZs will allow it, and most won't wait on you if you are holding up the load. Being rushed to land, drop your gear, and gear back up quickly to get on the same plane you just got off of does have several safety implications to consider. I do back to backs very regularly, but we usually get out at 10.5. That means I usually only have 4 canopies to watch out for when trying to land close and quickly(instead of 24....), and it puts me on the ground on a ~3-5 min call. It can still be a bit stressful, even with the extra time.

This season's setup.

They claim it has one of the best and fastest auto focuses out there. I'd be interested to see how it works in freefall. I'm at about a 95% hit rate with the 3N and a fixed 20mm.

Brake line rubbing silicone bumpers and fraying line.
Zlew replied to Anvilbrother's topic in Gear and Rigging
Never seen bumpers and slinks before. If you really want something to protect the slinks, have you thought about the pirate hats that come with Slinks? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fBX0ed2yE50&feature=player_detailpage#t=205 Edit to add- they may sit too low on the slink to give the protection you are looking for. -
I can only speak to the stock PD velo RDS- I jumped just the slider for a while, and my openings were generally pretty good, but maybe 3-4 out of 10 were "brisk". I fly camera, so I am more sensitive to that than most. I soon learned that the RDS slider was designed to make sub terminal openings quicker, and it is in fact smaller than the stock slider. Mine was 4 inches on one side, and 2 inches on the other shorter. Changing back to stock slider greatly improved my openings (love how she opens!).

Also shooting the 3N (with prime 20mm). I've been very happy with it so far.

Also- I was burned by the remote. My camera had the brilliant problem with the foil sticker shorting out the battery. It would turn on and start recording then it would fail and overheat. I didn't realize how/when it failed. I lost footage on several jumps, and had no idea I wasn't still recording. At first I thought it was just the connection between the remote and the gopro was lost. It wasn't until near the end of the day that I realized how many of the videos had dropped. A mirror or even the standard "am I on?" pre jump ritual wouldn't have helped this either. I could have addressed the issue and gone to another camera sooner if I realized how quickly the camera was failing.

Checking for cavities and loose fillings? My group is often first out on a low pass (10.5). I need to be recording on the door light, and then getting down to checking the spot and climbing out. I also have other gear to tend to (usually running 3 cameras these days). Pulling out a dental mirror and stuffing it back in a pocket in that time isn't practical for me. I use the remote now, but one of the problems here is I only know it is running the moment I push record. In freefall I have no idea what's going on, as I can't look at my remote again until I pull. I'm looking forward to having my Turned On next to my hypeye. Two red lights letting me know, from the door until my slider comes down that I am actually recording. For my workflow, this, like the hypeye, will be worth every cent.

CX150s and 100's still seem to be the most common video cameras you see. They do a nice job and work with the hypeye. For stills, if you like the Sony, the Nex3N, and the newer 5000 are great cameras and you can get switches for them without having to crack the case open. I'm using a 3N this season, and so far so good.

The line twist issue is the primary reason I have a UPT bag on both of my rigs (UPT and Sunpath). The times I have line twist before I hit line stretch have dropped considerably. Maybe once or twice in the last 5-600 jumps? edit to add- and even then never more than 1 twist. Jumping camera wings with a big ass burble, and canopies that often do not behave well in line twists, the stowless bag is well worth the $.

Nice setup! Have you considered grinding down the post after the clamp? Esp. since it is on your pull side. My setup is similar, but I have the Nex3N where you have your gopro, and the gopro on top (standard plate).
-
If your main is entangled with the helmet, get rid of the helmet. IMO, the bigger issue is not snagging your reserve (or components of your reserve deployment). See my post above about deployments on your back.

My suggestion is to keep your RSL/Skyhook hooked up if you jump camera. Without getting too into the details, I think there is a reasonable argument to disconnect an RSL with camera only if you are flying outside camera, and jumping aggressive canopies (high wingloading/elliptical/xbrace). The issue comes with how an RSL (not a skyhook) deploys your reserve while one your back and spinning. The chance of your reserve components coming near or touching your body are high, and risk of reserve entanglement with camera gear is increased. I have 2 rigs, and one is not Skyhook capable. I do not have an RSL on that rig, and hope to replace it with a skyhook rig next season. My second rig has a skyhook, and it is hooked up. In your case, I strongly belive having an RSL/Skyhook is be best way to go.

I thought the same thing when I read it. Something sounded unusual in having that much trouble with an upsize with that much experience. Several band landings and an ambulance ride in that situation seems very unusual. The wings are pretty similar (esp. when you add in an upsize...) and I wouldn't anticipate anyone with moderate currency/experience to have such significant problems.

Opinions please- cookie g3 dual camera setup?
Zlew replied to ludikris's topic in Photography and Video
I haven't seen anyone use it for tandems, but I was surprised at how many guys were using it at Nationals. To me... it really shouldn't work at all. It just doesn't seem like it would be secure enough (FTP guy here) or stable enough to get good video. I haven't tried it, but when you see it more commonly, including some of the best teams in the world.... I can't help but think that my initial conclusions might not be totally accurate. -
Opinions please- cookie g3 dual camera setup?
Zlew replied to ludikris's topic in Photography and Video
It doesn't seem like it would work for Pro level video due to the reasons listed in this thread... but some of the best teams in the country have been using that setup. I know Bill and Justin (last 2 Airspeed Video guys) used that setup. I believe Arsenal did as well. Those guys are putting ~1000 jumps a year into training and getting on the medal stand.... At some level it has to be working satisfactorily. -
Get video of your landings and coaching if possible. The most common reason people wipe out on no wind days (IMO), is people stop flying their canopy too soon. People stop flying and try to start running or sliding when their feet first hit the ground, or shortly there after. Keep her flying until the toggles are slack in your hands. Transition every lost drop of airspeed into lift and slow yourself down more in the process. You might be surprised at how much more lift there is, and how much more it will slow down before you have to take a few steps.

I would suggest you get back in and get current before thinking of moving to a more aggressive wing. A sabre 2 at 1.5 isn't exactly a pig. Depending on how long you have been out, you may even want to put a few jumps on something more docile while you knock the dust off. Depending on what you would be looking for or consider "fun" (turns/swooping/etc.), in the PD line the Stiletto and/or Katana might eventually fit the bill. Other manufactures also have some options between the Sabre2 class and a cross braced wings.
