A few questions: How many people usually attend a Boogie-'til-Ya-Puke event? What does the King Air hold, 12-14 jumpers? I have jumped it before but can't remember how many it holds without looking back in my log book. How many loads per hour? This King Air holds 14 jumpers. Capable of 4.2 loads per clock hour (includes refueling). Can do 48 loads on April 15 (8AM until sunset). Average number of skydivers that attend is around 80. Average number of jumps on a single day event is around 7. Some will make 12, some will make 2. Mike

If you go to the USPA website http;//www.uspa.org, click on "Already a Skydiver", click on "Membership Services", click on "Renew Online", then you would have been able to renew online. If you had printed out that page and presented it to the DZO, he probably would have accepted it as proof (if you had coordinated this in advance). Or, you may have been able to do it at the DZ in the presence of the DZO and he would have accepted that as proof ( I would accept either one). Or, since membership is valid with postmark, you could have faxed the completed renewal form to the DZO, S&TA, your Regional Director, or a National Director and they in turn could have mailed or faxed it to USPA and then vouched for your membership by phone to whoever needed verification or even faxed verification to whoever. Cost: zero. If you will use the resources that are available to you(Regional Director, National Director, S&TA) you will usually have a better outcome. The address, telephone numbers, and emal addresses of all the Regional and National Directors are in the front of each and every Parachutist Magazine. I am sorry that you are disappointed with the service from HQ but I know that they are understaffed by at least 9 at this time. Plus they are undergoing the transition to the new building where they will have staffed a call center that can be more responsive-- no menus, a real person will answer the phone. There is a balancing act between the service that HQ can provide and the money allocated to do it. We could have immediate service to all your needs but then what will you accept for dues? Next time seek the help of your elected representatives. I know that they would have helped you in this situation ( your lack of planning ) and I know that I would have helped you. Skydive Taft and Dave started this thread on the positive note of having a Super Otter for your skydiving pleasure. They did not say anything negative about the PAC or its operator simply wishing to accentuate the positive nor have they said anything negative while being accused of at the very least of being "difficult". I believe that these forums do a disservice to the skydiving community when they allow any anonymous coward to post whatever they wish without having to take personal responsibility for their words. I am surprised to hear this. I heard that you and Dave did in fact have a falling out. Glad to hear that you both patched things up. The rumor was that Dave felt he was being neglected because you were treated like a rock star by the up-jumpers at Taft. Everyone loved you and Dave got jealous. He wanted to be the “Prima Donna” DZ owner but you had that badass King Air which stole his thunder. Word is, he tried to retaliate by raising ticket prices in order to earn a slice of the pie. I thought that is why ticket prices went from $14 to $17 per jump in one season. Guys like me would constantly go up to Dave and try to tease him. I used to ask him “Hay Dave, when are you going to get a real aircraft” or “I refuse to jump out of any aircraft that doesn’t get me to altitude in under an hour”. I suppose that wasn’t very nice of me. Sorry Dave. I hope however, my derogatory remarks were a partial influence in Dave finally investing some coin to get a truly competitive aircraft. If this is the case, I think everyone at Skydive Taft owes me a serious debt of gratitude. UntamedDOG That is absolute crap. Dave and I never had a "falling out", there was absolutely no friction between us, we had an excellent working relationship, and we are good friends. As for me being treated like a "rock star", no hot naked groupie chicks came to my room, no screaming fans threw their panties at me, the M&M's were random colors, and no one even offered me any drugs. The increase in price was done by me, not Dave. The price of $14 the first year was based on the fuel prices that year and the fact that we had planned for a large contigent of Japanese to come for their training camp with us as they had done at my previous location in Coolidge. Due to an unfortunate tandem fatality, our good Japanese friends could not come. The prices the next year of $17 were based on an increase in fuel prices and the fact that the Japanese would not be coming which reduced the volume and subsequently raised the prices. I repeat, Dave is a great DZO, he is a good friend, and the jumpers in Taft are lucky to have him running the DZ. It seems that your goal is simply to stir shit. Well in this case there is no feces to blend so I suggest you focus your efforts elsewhere. Best regards, Mike Mullins

As regards Dave's and mine relationship, the above statement could not be farther from the truth. I thoroughly enjoyed working with Dave the two winter seasons I was at his DZ. I have worked with many DZO's throughout the country and consider Dave to be absolutely one of the best, from every standpoint. The only reason that I was not at Taft this winter is that both Dave and I recognize that his DZ needs a year-around turbine aircraft and when the PAC offered to fulfill this need Dave, of course, took the offer and I encouraged him to do so. I consider Dave to be a good friend, we continue to talk often, and if the opportunity again ever arose I would be very happy to work for him at Taft. Mike Mullins

By all means contact the FSDO when you need to. Don't contact them, waste their time and yours, when you do not need to. In this case there is no legal or moral requirement to contact them and you are only asking for red tape if you do. The process of educating them can ofter result in professional embarrassment to them when higher ups (DC) need to point out the errors of their ways. I deal with FSDO on many occassions, always treat them with respect and strive to have a good working relationship with them. For the most part they are good people trying to do their job. However, when I do not need to bother them, I don't. Follow the regs, talk to the FSDO when you need to, and don't bother them when you don't. Mike

You are getting some bad info. Here is really what you need to do: First, no NOTAMS are required to be filed anymore. What you need to do is contact the Air Traffic Control facility that owns the airspace at your exit altitude. This will be a an Air Route Traffic Control Center ("Center") or an Approach Control facility ("Approach"). You need to inform them (not ask their permission) of the jumping by giving them the information listed in FAR 105.15. This FAR is in the Skydivers Information Manual and you can get it by clicking on: http://www.uspa.org/publications/SIM/2006SIM/section9part105.htm#10515 The pilot will also need to contact the ATC facility 5 minutes before the jump for a "traffic advisory". This is not asking for "permission" to release the jumpers although many ATC facilities erroneusly think it is. Knowing exactly what to put on this form and knowing how to talk to the appropriate facility can be intimidating for the uninitiated. When you decide to actually do this, if you will contact me I will fill out the info for you and call the facility so that you will have no problems initially and in future notifications. Do NOT contact the FSDO and ask them for permission to jump at the airport. Do contact the "airport management" and get their permission, oral is fine. It is NOT a demo if the purpose is simply to jump at the airport and you are not advertising an "air show" or "display jumps", or "demonstration jumps" to the general public. In reality the place you jump will become a DZ just like any other DZ. Again, you do NOT need permission from the FSDO, you do not need to talk to the FSDO, do NOT talk to the FSDO. The only time that you need their permission is for jumps over a congested area of a city or town or for an "airshow". Jumps at an aiport, or some farmers field, are just like jumps at any DZ. If the "180" you describe is a Cessna 180 then it is on the list of aircraft approved for flight with door removed. The aircraft owner, or pilot, will need to go to the FSDO and get a form called "Authorization for Flight with Door Removed". This form will list the limitations that the pilot must follow with the door removed. Or you can simply jump the aircraft with the door on ( not recommended). Tell the FSDO, if they ask, that you are getting the approval to use at some time in the future. Do not discuss the details of where you may jump with them. The FSDO often do not know their own rules and you will simply open the door to them telling you that you need their permission to jump, which is NOT true. If you do decide to jump it with the door on, have the pilot slow the aircraft as much as possible, open the window, then open the door and jump out. It is not easy. If you are USPA Members you will need to comply with the BSR's regardless of where you jump. The one that you may find the hardest to comply with in this situation is BSR 2.1 H 3: Manned ground-to-air communications (e.g., radios, panels, smoke, lights) are to be present on the drop zone during skydiving operations. [NW] You may need to take an extra person along to meet this requirement. As long as you comply with the USPA BSR's your USPA liability insurance is valid (regardless of where you jump, as long as it is not a demo). If you are paying any money for the jump is excess of what will cover the direct operating expense of the aircraft (fuel and oil) the pilot will need to have a Commercial Pilot License and the aircraft will need a current 100 hour inspection. If not, a Private Pilot and Annual Inspection will suffice. Mike Mullins USPA National Director

There is much misinformation posted in this thread, and many others, about USPA Group Member DZ's vs Non-Group Member DZ's. As far as individual USPA Members are concerned, there is no actual difference between the two. As an individual USPA Member, you pledge to follow the USPA BSR's regardless if you are jumping at a GM DZ or not. Your insurance is equally valid at both (as long as you follow the BSR's). The only difference between the two is that the USPA GM DZO makes a pledge that jumpers at his DZ will follow the BSR's and all jumpers off student status are required to be USPA Members. As the individual USPA Member also pledges to follow the BSR's, the GM DZO pledge is redundant as far as USPA Members are concerned (assuming the individual member keeps his word). As for the age requirements, USPA has allowed 16 year olds to jump for at least the last 45 years ( The age for Tandem Jumps was changed to 16 about 2 years ago). The tandem rig manufacturer may place some contractual age requirement on those that use their rig but that has nothing to do with the USPA age requirements, which are 16 regardless of tandem or solo. It is the individual DZ, Group Member or non-group member, that actually sets the policy of the minimum age that they will accept and most require at least the age of legal majority. However, the age of legal majority can indeed differ state to state, although it is 18 in most states. I believe that some DZO's may be surprised at what the age of legal majority actually is in their state. The age of legal majority can even change with marital status or school status. For example, in Nebraska the age of legal majority is 19. If you are married it is 18.
