Studying skydiving / Skydiving culture
johnmatrix replied to saisid's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
There is a trend amongst skydivers to use smaller, faster canopies as they gain experience. The vast majority of injuries and deaths in the sport occur on landing, and in many cases might have been prevented by using a larger, slower canopy. Yet people continue to downsize (sometimes in the face of all advice to the contrary) despite the obvious risks of doing so. Its probably the biggest issue in the sport today. -

I reckon a good topic of research would be the downsizing culture. -
Independent Wingsuit Coach Database
johnmatrix replied to WickedWingsuits's topic in Wing Suit Flying
Anyone else notice that their website has the yellow Phantom from PF's homepage right in the middle yet says 'Exclusively TonySuit' at the bottom? -

I have had correspondence from them within the last 12 hours about an order. Make sure you spell 'chuting' right in the email address...?

Another pic. Comment underneath is pretty much what I was thinking. http://blog.modernmechanix.com/2009/02/09/skiing-like-flying-with-bat-like-cape/

I don't know much about skiing but - what's with the cape thing this guy is wearing? Is he trying to get extra air time or something? http://blogs.suntimes.com/ebert/photos-in-need-of-comment/photo-for-817-of-an-ill-advise.html

Vector 3 Packing Tips – or is my main just too big?
johnmatrix replied to skip's topic in Gear and Rigging
This is what I do, I was told you can pack the V3s this way but a lot of other rigs should not be. But my container is a little bigger than yours and maybe that is why your grommets are exposed and mine aren't. The V3 manual on the UPT website has some good pics that contrast with the shape of your packjob (as others have mentioned) http://www.unitedparachutetechnologies.com/PDF/Support/Manual/MAN_004___Vector_3_Manual_07_44_13%5B1%5D.pdf p66-67 -
Awesome! Polished brass helmet, with green patina for the older jumpers? Camera chest mounted, large format format film extendable box-type lense? Boosters with engines for tracking, pressure gauges on each legstrap.

How do you decide which advice to listen to?
johnmatrix replied to skybytch's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Yeah the only camera jump I've done was with one of those cameras and it was still a distraction - even when I knew it would be an issue and was adamant I was going to ignore it. On top of that the footage is pretty shit so there isn't much point I think. But an 8mm camera would be awesome. -
Thanks. From what I've read here it seems those (100/110/150) are still the ones to get if you can find them. Just figured I should get one now before stock runs out.
-
They're still selling on Amazon from what I can see.

Does anyone reckon the prices for the CX100/110 are going to suddenly drop any time soon?

I think the first step to control is to recognise what you do not have control over. To simply become conscious of our possible subconscious motives is a step towards this. The mind cannot exist without the body, our thoughts have a pattern driven by evolution. For Freud this included the sexual instinct and also later another instinct he called 'the death drive'. Basically though, technically 'the unconscious' is simply everything that is 'not conscious'. It is everything beyond our conscious minds that influences our thoughts. It is kind of a paradox though - how can the unconscious exist, when it only exists as posited in our conscious minds? It is a theoretical construct that can help things make sense. It is an idea that you can choose to believe.
-
It sounds logical but it doesn't necessarily make it right. Depends on what you define as subconscious. You might be able to think away the notion of subconsciousness, but can you think away hunger, or pain? You might be able to ignore it for a little but not forever. I consider the subconscious/unconscious to include these biological functions.

I just don't think a cat would dig it. To my knowledge I've never met a cat that wanted to skydive. I've met dogs that liked eating their own faeces though. If cats wanted to jump they would be BASEing it anyway, at night.

Does watching youtube make you a better skydiver??
johnmatrix replied to Stearny's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I spent about a week doing this (and reading incident reports) during AFF and the net result was it stressed me the fuck out on my next jump. That being said I think we're all going to watch the clips no matter what. I reckon there is generally something to be gained from watching it. Just make sure to run anything you THINK you have learnt from it past your instructors. You'll eventually get bored of watching it though I think. -
Does 'feeling more solid' mean there is an actual difference in the pressurisation and/or how easy it is to fly the suit? Would any difference be more noticeable in a bigger suit?
-
I jump a V3 and get bruises on my arms too. I bruise pretty easily though I don't really worry about it.
-
LOL That's awesome. But did he like it once he fell out???
