Cutting off all ties with a family member v. have you done it?
TiaDanger replied to npgraphicdesign's topic in The Bonfire
I haven't spoken to my dad in almost 12 years. I've consciously kept him out of my life and my life is no worse because of it. I've often thought about contacting him and letting him know that I'm alive and well, but something always holds me back....he's a complete asshole, He's mean and abusive, and he doesn't deserve to have me as a daughter. Provided, of course, that's an option. Location makes a hell of a lot of difference. Very true... but the further you are from the main 'lines' the worse your DSL will be. Also, don't even THINK about satellite internet if you can get DSL or cable, this coming from a satellite communications guy, should mean something. Wow, thanks for the help guys!...Apparently the cable provider (Comcast) SUCKS, and that's the only one available in my area of Tucson. All the reviews for Tucson Comcast are awful. And they try to get newbies like me to buy the biggest package (i.e., 20 Mbps) by telling me I need it to stream movies and such from the net. I'm a total newbie to internet at my house. Never had it, but am trying to learn about it so I can order it. Apparently people prefer cable over DSL for the most part? And what speed should I get to stream movies uninterrupted from Netflix? I read that something like 6 Mbps or 10 Mbps is okay... Is this fairly fast internet? Or should I go bigger? Thanks in advance

Seriously? I must be a horrible orchid caretaker because I bought one, researched all about their care, changed its substrate accordingly, kept fans going because I read that they like circulating air...basically did everything I thought I was supposed to do, and I killed the thing. How are you people keeping them alive and thriving? I need advice! Organ donation can be a tricky thing; overall, it is an amazing thing that helps the life of someone who is in need. However, there are cases where I've heard that when the hospital and surgeons discovered a severely injured patient was an organ donor, they may have not tried as hard as they could to keep the person alive. I know this has happened in teaching hospitals and hospitals that are trying to get accredited for certain types of transplants. I watched a case where a woman was hit by a car and was brain damaged...they were trying to find the identity of the woman (she was an unknown female), but in the meantime the transplant surgeons were getting prepared to set her up for a harvest, and it seemed like they were hungry for some transplant surgeries. I am an organ donor, but it scares me because I don't want to be short changed if I get into an accident. If I am beyond saving, I hope that my organs will save another. But I want my doctors to do everything they damn well can to save me before that happens, and sadly, this does not happen all the time. ...is effing done! Three years of long distance, and I just graduated with my masters degree in biology which means I finally get to move. I can't describe how happy I am. Long distance + grad school at the same time sucked ass, I'm not gonna lie. For those of you wondering if it is worth it, the answer is yes...you just have to work hard at it, and if its meant to be, it will be. After all the nightmares other people made sure to remind us about, I'm proud that we made it! Sad to be leaving NorCal, but my ass is going to Eloy! It's nice to finally have something good in my life to report :)

:4:1 Four great jumps this weekend BECAUSE I just got my masters degree in Biology last Friday and it was the FIRST time I was able to skydive and not feel guilty about not working on my damn masters thesis!!! WOOOHOOO! That calls for a case ! And for the record: the appropriate ranking of cool modes of transportation is jet pack, hover board, transporter, Batmobile, and THEN giant ant. D.S. #8.8

I have a GREAT idea...how about you give my masters defense on Friday? And I can take your place of being bored! I'm really hating bored people right now!! Amen to that! I hate when people chastise others for supporting the 'wrong' causes. Katherine Heigl got so much shit for donating a million dollars the no-kill animal shelter cause instead of a human cause. I hate hearing about how many animals have been abandoned and are hungry in Japan (and everywhere else for that matter). They need homes, food, and love just like everyone else. It is heartbreaking to see how many animals have been abandoned due to the disaster in Japan. If you are willing and interested, there is a great place to donate called the Japan Earthquake Animal Rescue and Support: "We are a coalition of three groups; HEART-Tokushima, Animal Garden Niigata and Japan Cat Network. We are groups that have been rescuing and rehoming animals in Japan for many years. Our intention starting this group is to keep animal rescue on the agenda, provide shelter space, coordinate some Earthquake/Tsunami animal rescues, and to share animal rescue related news to the public. Like our individual groups, our collaboration will be staunchly no-kill. Any funds donated will be strictly and explicitly reported as well as expenses. Money and resources will be used strictly for rescue, care and support of animals in crisis due to the earthquake and tsunami. And while I first imagined cats and dogs, we can not yet know what animals beyond that we will be in a position to help." http://japanearthquakeanimalrelief.chipin.com/japan-earthquake-animal-rescue-and-support/ And please, no snarky remarks about how we should be helping people more than animals, or helping animals here before those in other countries! If you don't want to donate, no worries! But if you do, right on!! I haven't read though the entire thread. I'm in a wonderful relationship right now, but it's not a turn off at all, in fact its the one of the first things that turned me on to my boyfriend, that he DIDN'T want kids. I don't want little zerglings and couldn't be with someone who did. I'm lucky to have found a guy who didn't want kids. It seems that the vast majority of men want to eventuality have kids someday. Foolish! In the time it took you to read the first book, you could have watched all three movies and then had a nap. Tell me you're joking. Movies never tell the whole story. They'd be nine hours long if they did. Correct. I've read all 3 books and seen all 3 movies. They were each very enjoyable (although movie #3 was a bit weak). But neither medium would be a full substitute for the other. Well, I did watch the first movie a while back and it was evident that a lot of material was left out, so I agree that the books are considerably more comprehensive. Its always interesting when you imagine and create in your head what you think a character looks like, then they look completely different in a movie. I just finished the third book, and quite frankly, I'm exhausted! I hardly know what to do now! I thought they were outstanding. Now...onto the movies!

I have a RoadID velcro bracelet with identification information and emergency contacts that I wear. I like it because it's not a necklace and is low profile (most likely not a snag hazard). http://www.roadid.com And for the record: the appropriate ranking of cool modes of transportation is jet pack, hover board, transporter, Batmobile, and THEN giant ant. One of my tunnel coaches uses a sound system for tunnel and coach jumps. I wear a small sound unit on a lanyard inside my jumpsuit thats connected to ear plugs with embedded speakers. He has a microphone in his helmet that he speaks into. It produces extremely clear sound that's easy to hear, and I find it to be very helpful and efficient in the tunnel. No time wasted on feedback. So you've met my dad, eh? He had one damn kid and couldn't give two shits. Haven't seen or heard from him in going on 11 years. Whatever. Yes, divorce sucks when you're a kid. You really do find out how important you are to your parents. Luckily, most parents seem to make the effort to stay in their kids' lives. And for those parents that do, it will mean the world to the kid when they grow up. Congrats on finishing AFF! The logistics of having somebody donate money to you so you can buy and 'share' a rig or parachute is not really a great one, IMO. There are many factors that go into deciding on rigs and canopies for individuals, i.e., body size, canopy experience, etc. You are better off renting for a while, slowly downsizing, then buying a rig that is a good match for YOU. If anybody else comes after you, they can worry about gear that is right for them. My opinion? Save up money yourself instead if asking for handouts, and buy it when you've earned it. It will be worth it. And for the record: the appropriate ranking of cool modes of transportation is jet pack, hover board, transporter, Batmobile, and THEN giant ant. D.S. #8.8

I do, but audibles books are expensive...I'm not paying $15 for what I can get for $7 in paperback. But, if you or anybody else know of any cheaper places for downloadable books, I'm all ears.
