  1. You will get there! Now hurry, solos get a tad boring! "Fail, fail again. Fail better." -Samuel Beckett
  2. Buy used!! Or, if you're lucky like me... buy new at a used price! (bought a rig that was never jumped and the owner just wanted to get rid of it) Just pay attention to the classifieds. Helmets are there for the small knocks and headbangs... they're not like moto helmets. Expensive, yes, because of materials used (carbon fiber on some). "Fail, fail again. Fail better." -Samuel Beckett
  3. I packed a 220 on my student canopy. The damn D-bag was soo damn small, even my instructor was having a difficult time with it. It opened just fine "Fail, fail again. Fail better." -Samuel Beckett
  4. Got the "A" today! Did (tried) a 3 way /w camera on my last jump. Even though it didn't go as planned, it was tons of fun! Thanks Arvin, Justin, and Steve! And the new rig got it's first grass marks, too. "Fail, fail again. Fail better." -Samuel Beckett
  5. Yes, unassisted. The only pointer was, "Would you jump that thing? Well, you'll find out soon, get on the plane." "Fail, fail again. Fail better." -Samuel Beckett
  6. I will be there tomorrow! Check dive! "Fail, fail again. Fail better." -Samuel Beckett
  7. ...and it worked! Whew! "Fail, fail again. Fail better." -Samuel Beckett
  8. Ahhh... which boxes should I check? j/k I remember the hazing days at Ft. Benning... I've never had my ass kicked so much in my life.. "Fail, fail again. Fail better." -Samuel Beckett
  9. I think once you graduated AFF, it's time to start using your own gear. "Fail, fail again. Fail better." -Samuel Beckett
  10. Damn, wanna go. Out for military training... "Fail, fail again. Fail better." -Samuel Beckett
  11. I prefer analog faces with what I'm reading, both my watch and alti. Here is my medical side coming out of me: Reading an analog or digital device is spatial or a numerical activity for the brain. An analog reading requires both while a digital only requires the latter. The advantage of an analog reading is that, if you grew up and use an analog clock every day (a watch, for example), the reading becomes habitual and "burned" into your mind, making "reading" almost immediate due to hand positioning. A digital reading, in an age of TV, internet, and wrist watches, it becomes "easier" to read because numerical characters are pretty straightforward and require less cognitive effort. With that said... Personal preference on an alti is up to the user I believe. "Fail, fail again. Fail better." -Samuel Beckett
  12. Don't worry, you'll get it. Flaring is a judgement call based on winds and canopy. The ladder thing I've heard before. Maybe try stairs, too. Oh, and congrats on being solo now! "Fail, fail again. Fail better." -Samuel Beckett
  13. Thanks guys for the great info! As I said before, I want to be a GOOD belly jumper. So I will go with an RW suit. I guess FF can easily be done with a pair of FF pants and a long sleeve shirt in the future. Steve, I talked to Mel and Purusha. Went to jump today and went into the shop, probably will get measured and order next Thursday. A license on Saturday, May 23 if all goes well! I'm bringing the beer and food! "Fail, fail again. Fail better." -Samuel Beckett
  14. Ignore the cheesy subject line For a new jumper who is unsure of which discipline to pursue, what type of suit would you experienced jumpers recommend? "Fail, fail again. Fail better." -Samuel Beckett
  15. As a new jumper, I agree. Muscle memory tells me to hook my thumb. Unfortunately, the used rig I bought has a soft reserve. It will quickly be replaced by silver. Plus, I can't imagine pulling a soft reserve with an injured hand, if it should happen. "Fail, fail again. Fail better." -Samuel Beckett
  16. Wow! Truly inspirational, great work! "Fail, fail again. Fail better." -Samuel Beckett
  17. Nice! I definitely love the view from Elsinore. San Diego is good too, just don't track into Mexico! "Fail, fail again. Fail better." -Samuel Beckett
  18. Welcome back! And welcome back to the skies! I'm headed back [to Iraq] again by the end of the year. Goal for me is to get my B-license by then. "Fail, fail again. Fail better." -Samuel Beckett
  19. Why the hell did you "have" to do tandem? I jumped out with JM and reserve side on day one. I have NEVER jumped a tandem. "Fail, fail again. Fail better." -Samuel Beckett
  20. Just to let everyone know.. Wings in May has a military discount that cannot be beat! 50% off all gear AND options PLUS free lateral cut-ins. You can get any rig with all the bells and whistles for less than the price of a regularly priced rig. Check out your dealer or, if you're military, deal directly with Sunrise "Fail, fail again. Fail better." -Samuel Beckett
  21. As a student, I've always learned to "tap my feet together" quickly when in a dive or doing a dirt dive to know my body position. I also did a lot of tunnel time. I feel those two methods have helped me a lot with keeping my body symmetrical. "Fail, fail again. Fail better." -Samuel Beckett
  22. Awesome vid, haha "Fail, fail again. Fail better." -Samuel Beckett
  23. Used it is folks! I REALLY appreciate everyone's input. I will be shopping around for a used rig at Elsinore or Perris and online. What's the average used price/size I should be looking at as a new jumper? If anyone sees anything worth looking at for a new jumper, be kind, and send me the info please.
  24. I gave up 7 years of riding and sold my heavily modded Kawi 636 to do skydiving. I think you know what I voted on your poll I did the occasional track and spirited riding on my numerous bikes. I have more moto gear than I know what to do with. But skydiving is a different, better experience for me. I'll be sticking with blue skies for awhile... "Fail, fail again. Fail better." -Samuel Beckett
  25. So I talked to my DZ about my situation... They offered me a solution for either now, or later when I return. If I order a complete setup through them (let's say a 150 main), it takes about 16 or so weeks to get everything put together. In that time I'm waiting, the DZ offers free, unlimited rentals and they progressively work with each jumper to downsize to the rig they ordered through the shop. By the time the rig arrives, when I'm comfortable, it will be appropriately sized for me and my ability. What do you folks think? "Fail, fail again. Fail better." -Samuel Beckett
