Thanks everyone! For my birthday I started my cross country trip to drag my 5th wheel from NY (where I lived last year) to CA (where I'm living now). Of course I hit some trafic, and when starting up from a stop I stalled the truck, only to find out that my battery was now deader than a doornail! For sheer panic try haing your house stopped in the slow lane with people hurtling down the highway towards you at 50+mph. Thought quick, grabed one of the batteries that power the trailer, jury rigged a place to mount it (much bigger than the stock truck battery) and got the truck off the road. Currently in Bloomsburg PA, at an Econo Lodge, and gonna take the truck over to Sears in the morning to have the Alternator tested. Sigh. I'll not defend the actions but point out, that... a) the instructor's body should NEVER substitute for the protection of the harness. EVER. b) I'll just bet that over the course of multiple 1000's of tandem skydives this instructor could make a somewhat informed desision as to which students to try this with. Smart? Probably not. I would not expect Bob Holler or anyone else to be so omnipotent to quash every self-righteous, arrogant skydiver by themself. It takes a village - so to speak. Bob knew Danny and how Danny could come across as an arrogant SOB on occasions. Bob was on at least two dives previously, on the day of the accident, where others have said Danny did HP approaches. Why didn't Bob ream Danny's ass then? Then again, there is the issue that this accident happened at a non-GM DZ. It's a DZ that is only in existence for one event per year. How would or could a USPA doctrine technically have any influence upon a DZ that does not pay money to pledge to abide by the USPA BSRs? The event organizer and many others who were at this event did say there were rules in place. Danny, apparently, violated those rules. Why he wasn't talked to or maybe he was and blew it off, I don't know. Stop throwing stones and look at what you can do to change the future. . Not a legal beagle, but I guess that some of the risk we take selling gift certificates is that we could have a 100% return rate. I doubt your return rate will go up much because of this. I wonder if printing the current value on the certificate could prevent those 7 to 10 year old ones from being used at face value. Well you know how I like to stir the pot, but I am also trying to point out a flaw in the system. Who enforces BSRs? S&TAs? Not as often as we'd like to think. To often they are not out in the field, or are hamstrung by the DZO/DZM. Instructors? We might mention them, but too often are ignored. DZOs? Most of them have a great apreciation of saftey in our sport, but when things get trivial, who wants to be bothered? Jumpers?
