Bryan Burke's "Skydive Patrol"?
diablopilot replied to ltdiver's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
They also have not exited an aircraft, been more than 10 feet from another flyer, or broken off from a skydive. They ARE good flyers, but nowhere near being skydivers. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously. -
Sounds suspiciously like a whine is starting here....... I've been paid many different ways as a Tandem camera flyer and guess what? In the end I make a profit. Camera flying is expensive to get into, and the DZ exists to make a profit, so I have no problem with them getting a cut. My favorite scenario is when the DZ handles the editing and I simply get paid to do the jump (and buy film). I can't really imagine why a DZ would do as you're suggesting. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.

1 container frozen OJ, 1 container frozen lemonade, mix with half the usual amount of water, the rest 7up. Substitute booze of choice for as much water as you feel is right. Place mix in large punch bowl and add dry ice. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.

The "45 degree rule" for exit separation DOES NOT WORK
diablopilot replied to kallend's topic in Safety and Training
It does. The largest DZ in Europe generally uses it as their guide for exit seperation... Cool. Now it's been established that they are wrong. Where's that? Empuria? ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously. -

Word. Though I immediately thought of aspects outside of the military application as well. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously. -

Bryan Burke's "Skydive Patrol"?
diablopilot replied to ltdiver's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
500 jumps is "old school?" 500 jumps is a the first year for more and more jumpers these days. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously. -
THe best opening crossbraced canopy I've ever jumped has been the Xaos 21. However I find that I like the way the Xaos 27 flys better and the opening are almost as nice. When packing, the sider does not need to be quartered very much, and the opening should be smooth. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.

It's been done, and while it's a "grey area" the fact that is can be defined as "operation outside of manufacturers recommendations" by both the FAR's and BSR's, and the fact that the FAA has been known to issues rather stern comments such as "We REALLY recommend you don't do this" would lead me to believe that if one was going to conduct such an activity they would be smart to not talk about it much, not do it on a busy day at the DZ, and not spread video of it throughout time and space.

undecided about the size i should take...

How many jumps at higher than a 1.8 loading do you have? ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously. -

diablopilot replied to frenchcloud's topic in Gear and Rigging
Get the 129. You'll be going to a much more aggressive planform, and a 1.7 loading is perfectly acceptable for the Crossfire. At that loading you will be able to learn a huge amount about high performance canopy flight, and retain a little more margin for error. The canopy will do all that you ask of it and when you decide then to transition again to a smaller size or two, the 129 will be very easy to sell as it's a popular size. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Already got one on order.

Won't sign a traffic ticket? That's a tasering!
diablopilot replied to ryoder's topic in Speakers Corner
Precisely. As you know, being in "Command" of a situation is RARELY decided by who has the louder voice. -

I watched the video three time through. The driver was wrong. Decidedly so. But the cop was an idiot. Is this the first time someone has been pissed about getting a ticket? Not by a long shot. A good cop will be prepared for attitude, frustration, and denial, and very easily diffuse the situation. As said before, this guy was an amateur. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously. -
I read his post, however your past made me think you were in favor of scraping the SIM. I see I may have been mistaken. The SIM HAS improved in readability 10 fold in the last 10 years. Know what works really well in conjunction with the SIM? When you're students are encouraged to read it and ask questions about things they are not clear on. Works for me. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.

Bull, the cop escalated the situation, the entire time. What, was it his first day on the job? A statement to the effect of, "Sir, signing this ticket does not admit any guilt, and you may argue your point in a courtroom where it's safer than the side of a busy road, but if you refuse to sign it the law will force me to place you under arrest." would have been a huge effort towards diffusing the situation. When the officer decided to make the arrest informing the driver of his intent would have helped too. I mean WTF? The officer has the guy hop out of the vehicle to arrest him and then turns his back on the guy? The cop had every intention of making this some sort of big cock power play. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously. -
Do we really need "Skydiving for Dummies" (soon to be available at Amazon.com for $19.95), or do we need to stop encouraging people who can't even take the interest in studying information about a life threatening activity they are participating in? What's next? Pilot Operating Handbooks with pictographs instead of words? ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.

diablopilot replied to ryoder's topic in Speakers Corner
That cop was way out of line. He could have possibly prevented this by explaining to the driver that failure to sign the ticket would result in the officer being forced to place him under arrest, and that signing the ticket in no way admits guilt. Drivers often forget those two points in the heat of the moment. He further escalated the situation by drawing his weapon on the driver with out explaining that he was intending to arrest the driver. When the office says "Ok hop out" the driver thinks that they going to look at a speed limit sign. When the man turns towards his vehicle, he is not a threat, he is bewildered. The cop is a rank amateur. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously. -

The nice thing about Static Line/IAD is that canopy flight doesn't seem to get overlooked as much, probably because there is little else for the student and instructor to focus on for the first few jumps. I do agree that it's a short coming in all Ratings Programs. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.

Dude, if you kick it with Chuck for the boogie, pay someone in advance to lead your ass back to the airport on time for your flight home. Your brain will be in no condition to think about anything more complicated than breathing. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.
