"Skydive terror" - TV reporter tumbles on AFF
diablopilot replied to DannHuff's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I prefer training students with a full climb out exit. It's more realistic to what they will be doing later in skydiving. Well done by the instructors, reserve side had the option of letting go, but I don;t think their decision changed the skydive much. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. But several of their instructors are already highly experienced. I strongly recommend Steve, he posts here as "srusty1234" ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.

Because that's the way I like to fly on tandems. When I shoot my 14mm the shots are too wide unless I come in really close in which case I'm sacrificing the video shot. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.

What Rebel? Film? Digital? What's your Wide angle on what type of video camera. Basic answer: Match your video camera's view. For me: Full frame camera (i.e. film or expensive digital) I like the 28mm Cannon For my 10D (1.6 modifier) I would like to have the 20mm Cannon. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. No magnets needed. Simply a "fold and tuck" at the bottom of the toggle along with the current brake stow and the snap would do. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously. -

4th or 5th tandem of the day, I meet the most scared woman I've ever seen. I mean so bad that as I'm checking her harness I ask quietly "Are you sure you want to jump today? You don't really seem that excited." Before she can answer a male voice behind me says "Aw she's fine, just a little nervous, right "hon"? The husband. It becomes clear. I ignore him and get a somewhat resigned but confident nod from her, pause for a moment and then remember I'm not a relationship counselor, grab a rig and head for the airplane with student in tow. She's frozen the entire ride up, fingernails are digging their way straight to the bone in my kneecaps. At altitude with her tightened up and ready to go (I had to put the goggle on for her as she wasn't letting go of the harness) I ask again if she is ready to jump. With tightly closed eyes, I get a short nod, and a very quiet, "You do it, you jump for me." Ok here we go. Exit was easy, although I carried her to the doorway, and freefall was uneventful other than the constant shriek of terror and the fact that she never let go of the harness. As the canopy snivels open the shriek changes to a panicked yell of "I can't do it, you have to". This repeats 2 more times. With toggles in hand I ask "Do what?" "You have to open the parachute, I can't do it, I can't move" She cries. After a moments chucking at the situation, I reply "Look up." Upon seeing the open parachute she goes catatonic, closing her eyes and griping the harness for dear life, only showing any evidence of life when I request her legs up for landing. After laying still in my lap for 20 seconds or so, "husband" (probably a temporary title) runs over and helps her up screaming "Wasn't that great?!". She slapped him. Hard. Then she stormed off back to the hanger leaving the two of us tandem instructors developing a hurried interest in picking up our gear in an effort to not be caught laughing our asses off at "husband". Upon my return to the hanger, my student comes walking out sans harness, having collected her belongings. She blows right past "husband" and stops in front of me. "Thank you for keeping me safe." she says simply while handing me a $100 bill after extracting it from "husband's" wallet. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. An almost non bendable reserve pin to address riggers who over tighten closing loops to conceal P/C's from popup. Shorter straight main pin to help prevent a hard/no pull situation if improperly stowed. Got rid of the RSL "ball" thus removing the possibility of the ball accidentally being jammed into the large ring. Improved the attachment of the "ball" handle on the drogue reducing the lost handle phenomena. Improved drogue bridle. Built in replaceable sections using slinks for connections. More durable design within the "chimney" of the "disk". Good work Mr. Booth and crew! The absolute best and safest tandem rig on the market today! My first and only choice. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously. -

Bryan Burke's "Skydive Patrol"?
diablopilot replied to ltdiver's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I can't speak for anyone else, and methinks you're being too sensitive, but I never said they were not great flyers. I admire their talent, am a little envious of their skills, and excited to see children having so much fun. Working with kids was one of my favorite things about working in the wind tunnel enviornment. I state that they are NOT skydivers, and have quite a bit to learn in order to become one. The statement in the article that implied that they were better than skydiving instructors was an indirect slap in the fact towards skydiving instructors in general. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. When is the last time you took some of your profit and contributed to the advertising budget for the DZ? The property taxes? The the airplane cost? The hourly wage for manifest? The rent? Oh yeah and when is the last time you went into a Denny's and got a free meal because you said "I'm with him?" ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are.
