Well that is a bit different Like I had mentioned family can be assumed on different levels. I do think there is a brotherhood in skydiving...but it can be said the same for many other hobbies too...Like today, I saw a lady walking a Shiba Inu (dog) thru the parking lot at SDC. I ran up, asked her if that was a Shiba (which i was sure of) and we sat there chatting about the dogs and rescue. I went and got my Shiba from the trailer.... 2:0:1 2 days of pain the butt work to finish up a trailer at the DZ...over the last few weeks, we had to tear down the desks and stuff that were in there, this past weekend, we measured and cut a sub floor to stick the cheep vinyl tile to (the trailer wasnt square either lots of cutting), (doesnt stick to partical board ) Cut and glued that down, tiled the floor, sealed windows, made a cover for the AC unit that had nothing but a tarp coving the inside from the out! It now has been plywooded into the trailer! Built 2 futons, installed fridge, microwave, coffee pot, toaster and a few other things oh yes made curtains for 8 windows....and got to sleep in MY trailer last night!!! Yippie... I think it can be used lightly...as there are many families...however I do agree that some people are looking to fill a void. Just the same there are people who turn to the internet or other avenues in the same way. They cannot maintain true relationships in real life, and on the internet there is less emotion, or you can easily mask it and become what you want people to think you are. Same thing with the DZ...people can put on an "Act". Its fun, its part of the DZ culture....if you so choose to participate, if you dont that is no problem either. It is great to have the "Surrogate" or "Extended" families, as long as you realize that it is just an extention of reality. There is nothing like true flesh and blood family and true friendships...the ones that last for decades!
