So what did this cartoon get right?
Hellis replied to ntrprnr's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Maybe she's just in the middle of the deployment, that would explain the closed riser covers too, but why is she holding the toggles then? Yikes! Landing on high heels. I'd rather go barefoot! no, not since the lines are spread that far apart. that would mean the canopy is wide open so she cant be in the middle of deployment -

since the canopy is out she should be in a feet-to-earth position and not body-to-earth position. her front and rear risers are connected at the top. the links looks round -
i dont have any expiriens of those sunglases but i suggest you order with AR (Anti reflective) coating. i orderd one pair without and that was stupid. i dont notice the glare when im in the air but when im packing or just walking around with my 'goggles' its a bit annoying. you can try them on before buying: http://www.sportrx.com/rx_faq.asp#7

www.sportrx.com they have a few that are suitable for skydiving. i bought two pairs of 7eye bora with polycarbonate perscription lenses. one dark and one clear. probably the best buy i have ever done. can wear them loose while in the plane and just before exiting i just strap them on hard around my head. they dont fog up while beeing loose, and they have smal airvents in the foam so if they would fog up they get clear as you get close to the door

roll down the window on your car and stick your head out, that will give you an idea of how they work

i dont see analog altis as cheap an reliable. analogs and digitals cost about the same new. reliability, well ok, they work. but i have yet not seen a analog that i feel confident to say what altitude im at when looking at the alti. usually you can say i was about 300 feet +-50 feet, because they are not accurate enough. once has my viso shown a wrong altitude, i landed on my knees and had my hands on the ground, viso showed -5, when i stod up again it showed 0. thats realiability for me. regarding your batteryeating neptune, did you touch the battery when replacing batterys? the fat from your fingers can discharge a battery. since everyone keeps focusing on that someone COULD do something wrong with a digital, you could mess up on analogs too. forgeting to zeroing the alti before liftoff. you could by accident when bumping your alti against the plane twist it so it shows a diffrent altitude.
-
why would they be more sensitive to damage? if you would damage a digital alti you would know (not working at all/broken screen, etc.), but a analog might seem ok but something might got messed up inside it. yes you need to pay attention to batteries, 20-30 years ago batteries might have been something you forgot but today i would say its one in a million of all skydivers the dont have a cellphone/camera/cordless phone/you name it where you every day check the batteries on. so this would only be one more device you would check. no big deal as i see it. why would a digital have a higher likelyhood of not working in freefall? im very glad that i have a Viso, some jumps i have been blamed for pulling low, with the viso i can prove that i did not pull low it was just everyone else pulling high. example: me and two other "newish" jumpers jumped together, we agreed on pullheight 1000 m (3000 feet). i landed and everyone blamed me for pulling low. viso showed 750 m deploy (2200 feet), which is "correct", the other two had protracks showing deployment at ~1100 m (3300 feet) meaning they probably pulled at 13-1400 m? so people at the ground saw them two pulling at what looked like correct altitude and me falling "forever" before finaly pulling. if it wouldnt have been for the viso i would probably have been grounded. why is everyone focusing on the "bad" things about digital altis?

i tried that today, and it orked ok. what i found worked the best was to grab the cheststrap with my left hand and pull it to remove the tension. thanks for the tip!
-
I have ~55 jumps now. the reason i want to loosen the strap is because i want be able to move in the harness. why i started doing this in the first place is because one of the instructors told me to do so. he told me the canopy will be more stable. i can say i dont feel much extra stability in flight but i really like that i can move in the harness. its much more comfortable with loosend strap. i dont mean i feel unsafe loosening the strap, but since there is other canopys (and perhaps people in freefall) in the air, i should watch for trafic instead. it would be great if i could watch for trafic while colapsing slider and loosen the cheststrap. so its not the actual messing with the harness that is the "unsafe" thing, im thinking of unsafe as flyingin to other jumpers. i have been loosening the cheststrap in flight since i was a student (much easier on student gear), heck i have even loosend the legstraps once while under canopy. but im having problems with the new javelin cheststrap, i guess its too safe
-
i was just about to make a thread about the cheststrap when i saw this thread. first the ontopic response. my cheststrap is so long that i dont see how it can slip that far. if you look at the attached image, black beeing cheststrap, red beeing the frictionloop and green beeing the spandex keeper. this way you will keep tension to the frictionloop and it wont slip (never hapend to me), and when you are under canopy you can easily pull the end to losen it from the spandex keeper. my problem is i cant loosen the cheststrap. the frictionloop makes it almost inpossible to loosen cheststrap under canopy. last jump it took me about 20 seconds to get it loosen. anyone that got a tip on how to do it? it feels kind of unsafe to wrestle with the cheststrap for that long under canopy. EDIT: couldnt upload the file, click on the link instead. http://www.hellis.me/Strap.jpg

Skydiving & Depression, does it help?
Hellis replied to poser's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
i dont know how to say this in a nice way. but.. give her a tandemjump first, that means atleast one of them wants to pull the cord. im not implying that she is suicidal but depression can do the craziest things. i will keep my fingers crossed that it will work. -
yes. i belive this is one of those things nobody can tell anyone else what is right and wrong. everyone has their opinion about what is correct for themselfs. personally i think analog altis are too big and harder to read. some people compare it with clocks, saying analog clocks is easier. to some it is, to some its not. and last time i looked at a analoge clock the hands on the clock was going the opposite way around as on the alti. this HAS caused problems, i know one student that was mistaken on the alti because it was going the 'wrong way'. a car with a automatic gearbox should be easier to drive since there is less to think about and only two pedals. if that would be fact why are manual geard cars still sold? i cant drive automatic geard cars, get confused and i always use the wrong foot to break when someone says analog altis are easier to read, it just sounds silly to me. its like if i would say Javelins are the easiest rigg to close. i bet that would be a very long discussion

Oh? I will try that. Thank you for the advice. d100965: it might feel like its 14 hours between arriving and geting up in the air, but its not so i guess i have one of those with a softwareproblem or perhaps Dan is correct? either way i will keep an eye on it

Do anyone else have the problem that the Viso shuts down? When i get to the DZ in the morning i turn it on and get all my gear ready. When its time to jump i always check the alti before entering the plane and sometimes its turned off. I think this has happend four times now. Im not 100% sure i did turn it on in the morning when arriving every time, but the last time it happend (yesterday) im very sure i turned it on. When i turn it on the second time it always stays on. And thats why im not sure if it really happend four times, you get this question in your head "... did i turn it on..." I cant find anything in the manual that explains why it does like this, so my question is. Is this normal, and has it happend to anyone else?

can anyone explain why they are making a 21:9 TVs now? the 16:9 is not even working yet. as i remember the reason why we should move to 16:9 was to get ridd of the black edges up and down on the movies. today, ~10 years later (or more?) we still have those black edges! why do everyone have to do it the "Microsoft-way"? ship it before it works, make some minor adjustments, then scrap it and release something else that is "supposed to work so much better" pff... im old enough now...

Approx. Amount Spent in Sport Divided By Your Jumps = ???
Hellis replied to Mazz's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
i dont think you will ever get a good answer. those who count the money they spent in the sport has either stoped jumping or just started. those who jumped over a long period of time dont care since its their life. i dont think you can ask this kind of question to anyone that has had a hobby for a long time. how much does it cost to collect stamps? coins? it has alot to do with quality. 'nice coins' or the ones you find on the street? new gear every year or used gear till it goes boom? -
when you are 'there', go here: http://www.ofkdz.nu/

so you are saying the real skydiver that was the model for your image needs surgery? i bet you can get more if you "where so amazed by the find you droped your hot coffee in your lap"

Would you mention that you are a skydiver?
Hellis replied to Superman32's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
i agree with you in most cases. i would not walk in and introduce myself as a skydiver. but if they would ask me what i do on my spare time, what am i going to say? just sit there looking like a fool? a "lie" would probably just make things worse if they see trough it. i also belive that having a hobby or doing something is better than saying you dont do anything, as someone else wrote earlier in the thread. skydiving for me is beeing (trying) in control and staying calm in high pressure situations. in theory that is....
