Non-profit Insurance companies? Why can we not have that?
MartinOlsson replied to Darius11's topic in Speakers Corner
These kind of entities exist outside of the US and seem to work pretty well. /Martin -
A quick note about pulse oximeters. POxes shows the percentage of hemoglobin that is saturated. It is not specific to what the hemoglobin has attached, and will therefore show "false" highs for people that has inhaled carbon monoxide or other gases that can bond to hemoglobin. Except from this the pOx will seldom or never show false highs due to insensitivity in measurement, but it is prone to showing false lows, mainly due to bad adaptation and bad peripheral perfusion. In the case of billvons test I would suspect that some of the data is false lows. /Martin

Does all US states report infant deaths the same? Does US states have stricter defintions then the 15 countries ahead in the statistics? I know without further research that a handful of those countries have as strict rules as is possible. More of them probably have too. You should probably choose a different statistic if you want to defend the American health care model. /Martin

Communist threat from the south in the 1980s
MartinOlsson replied to nerdgirl's topic in Speakers Corner
Sadly a nuisance that costed hundreds of thousand men and women their lives. US policies in south america during the cold war was borderline genocide. /Martin -
im open to correction here but dosnt the bible prohibit contraceptionof any kind and prohibit sex that is not for the purpose of procreation? assuming im right(and the catholic church definitely thinks this is the case) who decides which parts of the bible to listen to and which not to listen to? What strikes me is the blaming of women. How can it be the womens sole responsibility to make the man wear a condom? In most cases two people have made a mistake that leads them to considering abortion! /Martin

Lodi Facing Million Dollar Lawsuit
MartinOlsson replied to michaelt's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
This is done by good engineers and market forces, not by lawyers. The liability system in the US is unique, most other industrialized countries have systems with less punitative slant. Yet these countries seem to be able to produce as safe, or in some cases, safer products. The legal system has very little to do with the quality of products and services. /Martin -
COurt forces release of breathalyzer source code
MartinOlsson replied to ryoder's topic in Speakers Corner
I'm surprised that breathing tests are accepted as evidence, in a court of law, at all. Here they are only used to decide if venous testing is needed. /Martin -
Since punishments in a court of law is based on wealth it's just logic that fines work the same way. /Martin

Baby Death Lens (MKII Century 37mm .3x wide angle)
MartinOlsson replied to bomb420's topic in Photography and Video
I have the 3032, but I'm not happy with how wide it is. It's a great lens, but not if your really close to the action. /Martin -
Baby Death Lens (MKII Century 37mm .3x wide angle)
MartinOlsson replied to bomb420's topic in Photography and Video
Has anyone tried the opteka copy of the babydeath yet? They are selling it for 99 $ on their website. Is it a decent HD-lens or could you just as well buy a liquid? /Martin -
If you are looking for conclusions that can be generalized then that is true. If you for example want to investigate a subject to find ideas for further research, then a qualitative approach can be more useful. Journalist are seldom good at differentiating between the two. I'm not sure the authors of the study really had any clear conclusions. But since I didn't find any link to a fulltext version of the study I'm just speculating. /Martin
-
Did the study have a quantitative approach or was it a qualitative? Skimming through the article, I would guess qualitative. If thats the case a low N doesn't mean much. /Martin

I've compared the raynox 3032 to a kenko 0.42, and there is a considerable difference in angle. The Kenko is alot wider. To me the raynox was a bit of a dissapointment, at least width wise. /Martin

Strong Lawsuit & 'Defense Fund'
MartinOlsson replied to tkhayes's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
No not at all, but they often adhere to the same standards. Ie TSO. I would say that in this market US products or generally of good quality but I don't believe that foreign products are unsafe. But they don't. It seems as if the sentiment to make as good a product as possible is already there on the open market. The market most often needs regulation but punitative punishment in lawsuits is not a good way. Very pleased to here that. /Martin -
Strong Lawsuit & 'Defense Fund'
MartinOlsson replied to tkhayes's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
In this case the legal system might very well punish the development of safer products. As many posters has stated before, the Y-strap may be held against Strong in a courtroom, though I don't believe the Y-strap could solve the problem of instructor stupidity. It's a known fact that lawsuits is a sentiment for foreign companies not to invest in American counterparts. Most European skydiving gear manufacturers stay out of the US market partly because of this reason. That must be a sign of a not so good system. /Martin -
Proposition - new tech spec for reserves
MartinOlsson replied to MartinOlsson's topic in Gear and Rigging
I'm actually not that interested in absolutes. What I'm aiming at is how different brand reserves could compare in terms of speed in a braked setting. Hypothetically a 113 reserve could be better in a no input situation than a 143, if it has a much deeper brake setting than the 143. It could be interesting to know if the big reserve I'm buying actually is faster in a braked setting than a smaller one of a different model. /Martin -

What are the maximum velocity in 23 D and E? /Martin -
Proposition - new tech spec for reserves
MartinOlsson replied to MartinOlsson's topic in Gear and Rigging
One relevant factor when I'm shopping for a new reserve is if said reserve give me a reasonable chance to survive if I were to land it without any input. So far the only data you could use to decide this is size. But since manufacturers choose to measure differently and use different brake settings it is really hard to determine how rough a no input landing would be. Why not state which decent speed a canopy have at an 1:1 loading in the braked setting? Is there any good reason why this is irrelevant or not feasible? /Martin -
The only thing that video did was redefining most modern democracies to republics. Laws are still made by politicians who are elected by the people. /Martin

V304 Micron packing problem PLEASE READ!
MartinOlsson replied to RPetrie's topic in Gear and Rigging
I Actually had a 306, but the problem was that I wasn't satisfied with the tension I would get on the loop of the main container. If UPT made a rig that could hold a op126 and a crossbraced 90 / 9 cell 107 with maintained loop pressure I would stand in line. I was weighing my options and after having two separate riggers (who packed my specific container) tell me it was s an ok fit I went with the 304 with the op126. How come manufacturers won't make riggs that fit big reserves and small mains? It's seems as if the old line length argument has become obsolete... Please enlighten me... /Martin -
V304 Micron packing problem PLEASE READ!
MartinOlsson replied to RPetrie's topic in Gear and Rigging
Could you please elaborate on why this isn't a good idea if the fit is reasonable. /Martin -
I have done some testing on my quad-core and found the same problem in CS4. The solution/problem seem to be the memorycard or usb connection. If I import the files to my harddrive before I start editing it runs perfectly smooth. /Martin

V304 Micron packing problem PLEASE READ!
MartinOlsson replied to RPetrie's topic in Gear and Rigging
I have a 304 (2008) with a Velo 90 and a Optimum 126. I know that is one size more than UPT recommends but I let my rigger test it and it worked out surprisingly well. I even have a cypress 1 installed. Another rigger who have packed it also found it to work out pretty good. Tight but no where near impossible. I don't know what loop length were used though. /Martin -
If Allah was supposed to be such and good and peaceful guy, how come his followers are such a bloodthirsty lot? (Middle East) If Buddah was supposed to be such a good and peaceful guy, how come his followers are such a bloodthirsty lot? (China / Cambodia) The same reason. They are all man made tools, constructed to control the masses and gaining power. With the possible exception of buddhism that don't have that believe in this or you will suffer for ever thing built in to it. /Martin
