Tsunami aid - US provides $35m, Japan $30m, UK $29m - France $136,000!?!?
Newbie replied to Newbie's topic in Speakers Corner
Just to close this thread off, and to no one in particular - if you now look at the link i posted originally, someone at Fox has obviously realised the original mistake and has corrected it on that webpage. "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts -

Hold the presses...this just in from the bbc.co.uk newsite... KEY AID PLEDGES EU $44m US: $35m Canada: $33m Japan: $30m UK: $28.9m Australia: $27m France: $20.4m Denmark: $15.6m Saudi Arabia: $10m Norway: $6.6m Taiwan: $5.1m Finland: $3.4m Kuwait: $2.1m Netherlands: $2.6m UAE: $2m Ireland $1.3m Singapore: $1.2m Source: Reuters, United Nations from http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/4135099.stm I don't know where Fox got the original figure from, but i should have known something wasn't quite right before posting in the first place. This now makes more sense. "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts -

yeah sorry man, partly my fault for not writing my original post more clearly - its not that im trying to say "hey look this country is bad because they only contributed x amount etc" - that wasn't my intention. I was just more interested to know if there was some reason why the contribution from the French seemed quite small in comparison to others thats all. The "i wasn't bashing the French" wasn't directed to you, apologies, it was more just general content so people didn't think i posted this because i was trying to have a go at France etc "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts -

Calm down and stop jumping to conclusions, thanks. I do not hate the French and this post was not meant to bash them. I don't care if one nation gives more than another and yes, it's good to see people giving SOMEthing at all. The reason i posted this was because i'm curious to know why - comparatively - the donation was so small. I figured there might have been some kind of social/economic/political reason that i wasn't aware of, that's all. If there is no such reason, well then it just seems strange thats all. Ok so i was on Foxnews.com and i saw this... from this link: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,142815,00.html If this is accurate, does anyone know seriously why France's contribution is so small in comparison? They aren't a small country, or economically worse off than other European nations. Anyway, i'm curious if anyone can shed any light on this. Thanks "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts -
I just finished HL2 a few hours ago...slightly odd ending, but then i half expected it. Great game if you like running and gunning, which i generally don't, but beautifully constructed. Yeah i didn't lose much sleep over it, certainly wasn't the most addictive playing experience i have come across. I'll be going back to my regularly scheduled program of SWAT 3, which as far as i'm concerned, is the best tactical shooter on the PC. Much more my cup of tea "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts

Hi - i'm finding myself in NYC a lot these days (the wife is from there) and i haven't shot for a few years. I was wondering if there is a range somewhere in NYC? I know as a state, NY has strict gun laws so i'm not sure, but i would love to see how badly i shoot these days on the next trip out there. Thanks to anyone who can provide some info. coming to the US - should i buy $ here or there for best exchange rate?
Newbie replied to Newbie's topic in The Bonfire
thanks - i have never found a credit card that doesnt pass on fee's to customers or a debit card that - when using an ATM - does not charge me for taking out currency. And not just in the States - this happens throughout all of Europe. Maybe it's a UK thing? Thanks again for the advice! "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts -
coming to the US - should i buy $ here or there for best exchange rate?
Newbie replied to Newbie's topic in The Bonfire
thanks for writing all that out for us Bob - however i just wanted to ask about charges. When i withdraw from an ATM in the US i get charged a minimum or £1.50 (about $3ish) whenever i use it - this is the minimum charge - i think it's 1.5% or minimum of £1.50 - something like that. This means if i hit an ATM 3 times in a day (to save carrying alot of cash aorund with me) i would be paying a minimum of almost a fiver (which i know isn't much, but i hate paying something for nothing, and this is a way for the banks to make money from nothing). The other thing is my credicard company (most of them infact) charge 2.75% transaction fee. So if i buy something for say $200, i'm paying fees again that i can avoid by using my travellers cheques. With this in mind, is it still better to use atm's and credit cards? Thanks for the help all! "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts -

yeah i dont like carrying much cash around with me. So yeah i'll probably just do it now - besides, as was mentioned above, the rates will probably be virtually in line or else people would be making a living out of this sort of thing. New York, see the inlaws and have a nice relaxing break from here! "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts -

i find that isn't very reliable for consumer exhange rates (i.e. what we can get from our banks) "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts -

wow - according to this: http://www.bankofamerica.com/foreigncurrency/index.cfm?bac_pref=yes you guys pay $1.95 for £1? Is that right? We only get $1.79 for every £1 here. Someone somewhere is making a big ass profit... "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts -

ok thanks. This is why i'm wondering - i'm flying out on monday and i have heard the dollar is in a slump but as you said, that could change soon. If any US peeps have a few seconds to spare and could find out by calling a bank out there and asking what the exchange rate is for me, i would really appreciate it. i.e. what they sell dollars at for UK pounds. hi - this is something i never really considered too much. In the UK it's very easy to buy AmEx travellers cheques which i can use anywhere in NY pretty much. Today's rate is £1 = $1.79. Do any financial peeps know if it's better for me to bring a bunch of cash with me from here to there and exchange it there for dollars? I don't want to use my card - they charge 2.75% of the sale amount as a transaction fee. I don't particularly like to carry much cash with me anywhere, but if i can get a much better rate in the US, i will do so. Thanks if anyone can help. "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts -
to the liberal/Democrat/leftist cause i mean? It seems that perhaps, those who were fence sitters before, could well end up as Bushites as a result of some of what he does. Although i guess you could say the same about those fence sitters who see what he does and decide to go Democrat as a result. Anyway what do you think? Let's try and not go into the "WHO CARES, MOORE IS A FAT PIECE OF SH*T!" type posts if possible. "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts

the whole issue is way more complex than "this is bad for me, but oh well i can run it off later and feel good". Go read Fast Food Nation. Sure people can tiwst whatever they want into anything they want, which is what the detractors will always say, but this guy spent 5 years researching every aspect of the fast food chain. Without reading the book, you don't get the full picture. "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts
