>and I didn't say that you said.....whatever. My original response was to the originator of the thread. You responded instead. my mistake. i thought you were implying that no one can have very high debt and a bad job. I thought it was an odd thing to say so responded. i didnt really follow the thread as well as i could have and i suppose my off point post reflects that. I'm normally better than that but sometimes i just skip the long post because they bore me. my bad. "The point is, I'm weird, but I never felt weird." John Frusciante

>It was greedy Wall St. execs and bankers making $millions more each year than most professors make in a lifetime. Yes its that simple. Bankers were the only reason the economy tanked. It had nothing to due with anything else in the housing market. there were no other factors involved. all blame is on the banking sector. Does that really make sense to you? Statements like this is why i thought you were a young college kid and not a mature educator. How can a grown man actually think something as complex as our economy is controlled by one factor? "making $millions more each year than most professors make in a lifetime." Oh wait, actually its very easy to see why you feel the way you do. its not rational. your just overwhelmed with jealousy. i didnt say it was the norm. i didnt even imply. it does happen though. i gave examples of real people. two girls i dated and my nephew. do you want me to give their names and social so you can verify? You dont know me so obviously i could be making this up and you seem to imply so. oh well, i cannot help that. any reasonable person could look at my examples and see they are not even worth lying about because they arent that hard to believe or check. Check the tuition of some private NE schools then check what a researcher for a PBS affialiate would make, a social worker or a speach language person in a rural florida schoool district. My examples aren't extreme or hard to believe at all. "The point is, I'm weird, but I never felt weird." John Frusciante

Ever meet a social worker from a fancy NE school? i have. their tuition is about 45k a year and their job pays about the same. Not a perfect match to your example but i feel close enough to make the point. How about a speech language patholigist(sp)? i know one who went to Columbia and has a masters. works for a southern school system. started below 35k a year. Or my nephew who is studying for a masters in library science with an undergraduate degree from Vassar. he works full time as a researcher for about 8 bucks an hour. I'm know those are not exact matches to your request but IMO are close enough to illustrate that it is possible to pay far more than you can realistically make. alot of misdirected animosity out there. Depending on who reports it, cnbc said only 3% of the top 1% work in finance. Someone at the NYT said it was 13%. Still, you would never guess its that low by listening to the average Joe. Seems like some people should spread their jealousy and hate around a bit. As long as there is a Federal Guaranteed Student Loan program the tuition will rise faster than the cost of living. Why would it not? the customer can pay more so charge him more. There is nothing wrong with that. As tuition rises the teachers demand more and get it. again, nothing wrong with that in my mind. so here is the problem as i see it. At some point the loan's being taken exceed the benefit. I'm pretty sure many are there right now. So students can be responsible and go to a more affortable school or skip college all together. That would drive down tuition and then salaries. i just doubt our gov't or society will actually do anything constructive. to many people feel an expensive education is a right. so it's subsidized and tuition goes up. i think the OP had a good point, it builds a bubble. >What makes you think I'm not in the 1%? ive heard you mention your a dean and an older gentlemen. so as long as you lived a modest life i would imagine you are in the 1%. so what. that has nothing to do with the fact, by your replies here, you seem like a jealous hateful person. You can have plenty and still be jealous of others. expecially if you feel you deserve it and they dont. "The point is, I'm weird, but I never felt weird." John Frusciante

Wall Street execs camping out at St. Paul's? They can easily afford nice hotels in London so no need to camp out. when they actually pay themselves. Which is rare. also, they have no problem getting in to sites since most banks have relationships with private tour guides and directly with the best sites to accomadate visiting executives. I doubt the church is closed for them. Must suck to be so full of jealousy. Probably has taken a few years off your life hating as much as you do. It does put a smile on my face though so you are spreading some happiness. "The point is, I'm weird, but I never felt weird." John Frusciante

its hard for me to understand the thought process of grown men and women who think something as complex as our economy could be "tanked" by one group. I just cannot relate to anyone who thinks it was one factor or group who caused the problems we face. Whether they think it was barney frank or the evil bankers. People like that must find the world a very frustrating place. of course, maybe im wrong. maybe i would be happier if i could just single out someone and hate them for all of the problems. i doubt it though. "The point is, I'm weird, but I never felt weird." John Frusciante

If you guys are so smart how come you tanked the economy? Oh, maybe it was deliberate, to enrich yourselves and your buddies. I'm angry at assholes who crashed the world's economy by feeding their own greed. you guys? im a plumbing fixture salesmen. "The point is, I'm weird, but I never felt weird." John Frusciante

>Slap on the wrist. How much did he make in 2007-2010? actually he wont pay it. your firm pays your fines. they also pay all your legal fee's unless its a criminal charge, which this was not. I do not know this guy but as a PM in that group id venture to say he made about 10mill a year for many years. he is laughing at this fine and you. but you knew that. "The point is, I'm weird, but I never felt weird." John Frusciante

More likely they will get bonuses. JPM also settled with the SEC over similar charges. See a pattern? WSJ reports that Samir H. Bhatt, the portfolio manager at Credit Suisse mostly responsible, agreed to a six-month suspension as an investment adviser and a $50,000 fine. the only bonus he will be collecting is his unemployment insurance. "The point is, I'm weird, but I never felt weird." John Frusciante

actually i dont see a pattern. unlike you i am saddled with the burden of knowledge of how the industry works. They and their principles will be banned for a time and possibly for life. The SEC and Finra do not play games and do not work for the banks. people have lost their license for far less than this. you bring the regulators onto your desk and you lose your job. you get sanctioned and fined and you get suspended and possibly banned for life. that is how the industry works. I know you wont believe me because you do not care too. your angry and jealous of 28 year olds who make more in a year than you do in 2 decades. that might make you bitter but it does not make them criminals. "The point is, I'm weird, but I never felt weird." John Frusciante

It isnt about being a banker, its about being a dishonest and unethical person. It happens in every profession. These people acted unethically, were caught and will be punished. Hopefully banned from ever making markets again. "The point is, I'm weird, but I never felt weird." John Frusciante

i understood your post just fine. it was just too dramatic for me. im not a fan of 9/11 references in light conversation. maybe its just me. my posts are very clear. dont leave a gap in your resume if you can avoid it because it might discourage employers from considering you. i stated many reasons why. nothing radical in any of my posts. If you own your own company then fine it is your company to do as you wish. But if you just happen to be someone higher up the food chain in a given company I would say your attitude towards people working under you is a "Red Flag" in itself. I have been working in the IT industry for more than 25 years and have seen many changes over the years. One of the things I will never ever forget was what I witnessed at one of these "Dynamic Companies" on September 11th, 2001. I was working at a startup software company and many of the people I worked with were talented, dedicated people. But I will never ever forget on that day when you did not know if the world was coming apart at the seams, these dedicated people insisted to continue on with the work day conducting their product meetings as if nothing had happened. The shit was hitting the fan (or at least we thought the shit was hitting the fan) and all these people could think about was "How much money can we make with this dynamic startup company of ours". That day forever changed me in regards to my attitude towards how some people view work as if it was the only thing that mattered in life. One day you will get sick, or you will get injured while jumping or you will grow up and realize that while work is important, it is not the most important thing in life. If you want to only hire people within your internal circle of contacts that is your choice. If you want to look down on people who exists outside of this inner circle of contacts that is also your choice. Just remember none of us gets out of here alive and there is more to life than dedicating your every waking minute to your career. Been there done that ... I never said work is the most important thing in life. didnt even imply it. i want someone who enjoys their job so much that its like a hobby to them. i dont want them looking out the window dreaming of their next 6 month vacation. i dont look down on anyone for their desire to take long breaks. i even mentioned that. i just wont hire them for the reasons stated. 9/11 really? your going there? Save if for someone who didnt work downtown, 70th floor, that day. your post is so overly dramatic im embarrassed for you. lighten up. "The point is, I'm weird, but I never felt weird." 6 weeks paid. after several years you get a month sabbatical in addition. You don't see the conflict in your statements here? You are giving them lots of vacation time, and an extended vacation/sabbatical. Yet you think that anyone that takes a long vacation is problematic? Producers work hard. Hard work eventually requires some downtime. You can like the hustle, but eventually you need some time to relax or your productivity will start to sag, And there are some trips you may want to take in your life that are difficult to do in the middle of producing. Taking more than 2 weeks off is problematic, so the natural time to do it is between jobs. I'm a normal person. i contradict myself alot. current employee's are rewarded for working hard. if i dont know you and you dont work for me i make an opinion based on my life experience. people who take long breaks from work, multiple months, are not as dedicated to their work than others, in my experience. of course, that cannot always be true. i know that. but i must find a way to eliminate canidates. I, like many, use this. you dont have to like it but itis how the world works. im not rare. talk to any recruiter. if you want a high paying job in a respected profession. dont show a long gap in your resume if you can avoid it. I guess "Occupy Harvard" or "Occupy Yale" doesn't sound quite as catchy... Why blame those responsible when you can blame the guys with the deeper pockets. im not looking to blame anyone. i dont even think the schools did anything wrong. raise your prices to what the market will pay. i just dont understand how the kids cannot direct some of their animosity at the schools. at some point they have to feel they paid to much. "The point is, I'm weird, but I never felt weird." John Frusciante

I get why people are mad at banks. everyone has been told the industry is soley responsible for the mess. its easy to blame them and few defend them. I'm not saying its wholly untrue but i do understand it. here is what i dont get. so many of these kids are mad about their student loans. Why are they mad at the people who loaned them the money? shouldnt they be mad at the people who charged them for the education? at least partly upset at them? the gov't will loan you as much as you want for school. schools raise tuition far faster than the cost of living. students get more money no questions asked in loans. Gee, who would guess that the price would go up?? at some point shouldnt they feel they over paid for the education? "The point is, I'm weird, but I never felt weird." John Frusciante

6 weeks paid. after several years you get a month sabbatical in addition. we also offer top of the line insurance, gym membership, tuition reembursment and a great expense account. there is more that comes and go depending on profits. Like free lunch and such... the only down side is we expect you to be productive and get along with others. "The point is, I'm weird, but I never felt weird." John Frusciante

i work in a dynamic industry. 6 months is a lifetime. also, our people make a very high income and its a very competitive environment. only people who are very dedicated and focused are succesful. if want to take off time and not work, i dont personally dislike you. i just wont hire you. i want someone who is focused soley on producing. I have no problem with kids doing it right out of school. I just have a problem with adults doing it. If you work only so you can afford to play i dont need you. I need people who find this job their hobby. I already have one person who isnt focused and only wants to travel and skydive. I dont need another me. "The point is, I'm weird, but I never felt weird." John Frusciante

i very much agree with your post. My last firm did this for the 10yrs i worked there. i work for a growing firm now but personally will not hire anyone who cannot give me a reference i already know. there are too many qualified people for me to hire a stranger. In leaner times sure, but not now. also, if someone is out of work because they can't find it, no biggie to me. if they choose to travel or take some time, its a red flag. Fair or not, i dont like it and wont consider you. its my money and my decision. if you really did walk accross the east coast, make something up to fool people who think like me. Ready for a laugh? Finally the WS protesters' list o' demands.

That's like someone posting an article by Rush Limbaugh about democrats and expecting you to take it seriously. Except Rush is a lame joke while Krugman is an economics professor at Princeton who has also had faculty posts at MIT, Stanford and Yale. I notice you had no rebuttal to the content. Yes, he's an economics professor at Princeton, yet his economic views are illogical and Keynsian, but he's still a lame joke. Belonging to the ivory towers of the ivy league doesn't make your views on economics infallible, of which he is an example incarnate. I'll take Milton Friedman, he won a nobel prize which is apparently the end all of credibility debates today. I don't take his content seriously because I don't take him seriously. Krugman has a Nobel also, fyi He writes a opinion column for the NYT. its an academic who hates successful bankers. have you ever found one who doesnt? even in his best years he probably makes about as much as the average 28yr old GS VP and it bothers the hell out of him. after all, he is smart and they aren't. your country is tiny compared to ours. most of our states are larger than your entire nation. its not apples to apples. our problems are exponential. do you really think we could just act like Finland or your home and everything would be fine here? we are way to big and diverse for that. Warren Buffett calls for higher taxes for US super rich
weekender replied to dreamdancer's topic in Speakers Corner
Did you survey to verify this? Since education and intelligence has some correlation with liberalism, and bonuses are based on success, surely some of them are liberal. C'mon your saying there are rich liberal bankers who live in West Chester and Bergen Counties?. Not possible, those are all right leaning conservative places. No one who works on Wall Street and is wealthy is a liberal or supports liberals politicians. Just no possible. When you are so full of hate and jealousy you completely lose grasp on reality. The NY metro area is one of the most liberal places in the US. "The point is, I'm weird, but I never felt weird." John Frusciante
