Skydive Sussex Summer Kickoff May 23rd/24th
jsreznor replied to SkydiveSussex's topic in Events & Places to Jump
The Ranch is doing sunrise loads and will be open from 6:30 to 8:30 dropping jumpers. -
#1 Talk to your instructors first. #2 Rent a few canopies to see what you like before you buy. #3 Get an M6, not an M5. If you're new to the sport, you'll want a larger reserve. The main sizing is exactly the same. #4 You're on crack if you think you can fit (safely) anything under a 190 into an M5

Getting to the Ranch is cake. Port Authority - Adirondack Trails from NY to New Paltz. $18, 90 minutes. Get a cab from NP to Gardiner. $16, 10 minutes. Generally you can find another person going to the Ranch to split the cab ride. http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/pages/Gardiner-NY/The-Blue-Sky-Ranch/242320473577?ref=ts http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/group.php?gid=6124710476&ref=ts http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/group.php?gid=63804247555&ref=ts Or just come hang out at Nelson Blue sometime, meet some people, and get a ride. We're normally the loud ones doing shots on weeknights. Ask for Paulie if you can't spot anyone.

Downtown where? Downtown Manhattan? I do love a cold beer, and I wouldn't mind giving a skydiver my business. Front Street and Peck Slip, down in the Seaport. Walk towards the water on Fulton, make a left at the Bodies Exhibit, and it's two blocks up on the right hand side.

Potential DZO drama at Mustang Beach?
jsreznor replied to GLIDEANGLE's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
It's already ugly. Thanks for adding more drama to the fire. -
The Ranch. We have everything, except rules.

hey Shah, did you jump sunday? if so how did it go? If he jumped where I think he jumped, winds were light and super variable. This should be good.
-
You have 7 jumps and 2300 posts. Spam much? Here's your tip. Get off of DZ.com and go jump. Stop talking incessantly about what you're going to do and just do it. Stop posting and ask your instructors for advice.

Depends on how you fly in the air. I know people who do FT camera with less than 200 jumps, but it's because they are awesome in the air. What's the backup plan if you don't fly so well? I also wouldn't count on making ANY money as a coach.

He still hasn't said where he was going to jump. I think I remember his smash landing was at Sussex. I'd really like to go up and video the landing (so we can post it on the intrawebz).

Where are you jumping? I'd love to watch this.

New container for first rig
jsreznor replied to JohnnyMarko's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I'll give you my measurements if you want to convince your parents to buy a backup rig as well. In all seriousness, the process starts with your main canopy. Rent a few to see what you like. Talk to instructors to make sure it's the correct size for your experience level. Once you have, or are close to procuring that main, order your container, something that is appropriate for your chosen main. No point in having a container that your main doesn't fit into. It's a good idea to look ahead and see what you might downsize to, but it's a better idea to get a container that fits something appropriate for you, reserve included. Many people will tell you to buy used, but padded legloops are a godsend. Plus, you'll appreciate your container more since it fits you perfectly and you've had a chance to design the color scheme as you want. -
Stop hitting with your heels. Strike the ground with the balls of your feet and keep those knees bent. Shin splints happen most often when the lower leg takes most of the impact of a foot strike. Spread the impact all the way up your leg.

I hear skydive sussex is having a plane that goes up in the air and that they are selling lift tickets too!

Malfunction/Cutaway & Ground Crash Video
jsreznor replied to ridestrong's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
The whole point of this thread has been to not waste time unclipping the chin strap, and you suggest a course of action that would take at least ten times as long? How long do you think it would take to locate and extract your hook knife, isolate the one the line in question, and cut the line? 15 seconds sounds reasonble given the high pressure situation, combined with the physical aspect of spinning at a high rate of speed. What are your chances of snagging the wrong line wiht your hook knife? Add 10 seconds to locate and cut the right line. Do you wear gloves? How easy do you think it will be to grab on specific line, under tension, with a gloved hand? Add another 10 seconds for that. In the end, it you fail to cut the proper line, you still need to cutaway. How low do you want to do that? Forget the idea of cutting lines under canopy unless it is your last resort. If your reserve has a mal, start cutting. If you're in a wrap with no options left, start cutting. Otherwise, use your handles, and do it quickly. It was a question, jackass. Looks like one line to me. -

Um.....hook knife anyone? Think cutting that one line would have stopped the spin? -
I'm deliberately not at this point :D What I'm trying to gauge right now is how many countries require further certifications than their A license and what those requirements are. As I said, I don't wish to get into the merits of the FS1 itself right now, but more the overall progression system and how we bring people into skydiving. Now I had to look it up myself. With the exception of sidesliding and Levels 7 and 8, 3 point 3-way and 4 point 4-way, all the same skills are covered in the USPA student program. It's a digression, but what's the big deal on getting an FS1? Is it that hard to get those two extra jumps in?

Skydive Hawaii and Pacific are right next to each other on Oahu. Both allow fun jumpers.

I'd prefer Xanadu to get built first so I can get to a WT on mass transit.
