  1. How well do you get along with your folks? If you can have an adult, good qualtiy relationship with them, then I say move down there. Better weather for the coming winter (including jumping). Lower costs because you are living with them. An opportunity to get in on the "ground floor" of a potentially decent busines without having to make a huge investment yourself. And (most imprtantly) an opportunity to spend some time with your folks before it's too late. And I"m pretty sure your mom won't feed you Ramen Noodles too. You can always give it a try and if it doesn't work out, move elsewhere. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 2. Well, it's not really an AK. It's a voucher. And to get the $750 voucher, you have to open accounts for 15 stores and have $1,000,000 in account volume. And for $750, you could probably buy at least 2 AKs. They have their place, but it is at the lower end of the spectrum. Inexpensive and reliable as all hell (that's not an insult to them BTW). There's a jewler near me that usually offers a shotgun or hunting rifle as an "Add-on" to high value purchases in the fall. She gets a really nice Christmas present, he gets a new gun for hunting season. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 3. Keep in mind, planes are trimmed for an airspeed. Nose up or nose down trim is really setting the speed at which the airplane will hold itself (more or less) level and stable without any control pressures. If you have trim set for cruise, the plane will hold that speed. Increase or decrease the power and the plane will climb or descend (respectively) at the trimmed cruise speed. On approach, the plane will need to be trimmed nose up for the slower speed, or the pilot would need to hold quite a lot of rear pressure on the yoke (I know Calvin19, being a pilot, probably knows most of this, but I wanted to make it clear for the non-pilots) I'd guess neutral trim (or trim without the trim tab on the elevator) would be significanlty lower than the 400+ kts that the plane was going. In other words, he had tons of nose down trim cranked in to fly at race speeds. Once the trim tab departed, the trim speed would have been a lot, lot lower. The plane would have tried to go to that trim speed, and violently pitched up. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 4. No issues for me so far this morning. Last night I was having to refresh 5 or 6 (or more) times. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo
  5. None. PCA is Class A and Class B. Class A is above 18000. Class B is the old TCA airspace. Wiki Clicky "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo
  6. Nah, I'll bet that the IT guys who take care of it finally got around to reading Shah's posts. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo
  7. It just started for me an hour or so ago. 500 Server errors, Software errors, Internal server errors, it's being very difficult. Using Microsoft IE. (don't laugh, it works for me) No issues elsewhere (yet, anyway) either. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 8. What do you think the chances are of the GOP nominee being "Fairly non-scary"? It seems like the fringes are taking over the primary process (for both parties, not just the "R's"). Perry is the current front runner, Bachmann was the previous. Both strike me as scary enough that I wouldn't vote for them in the general election, and I've voted for the "R" candidate for a very long time. Recently it's been far more of a vote against the "D" candidate than an acutal vote for the "R", but I'd probably not vote at all in the general election if either of those 2 was the "R" candidate. 9. Some would some wouldn't. I'd say "It depends" Small group belly flying, doing relatively simple stuff? Sure. Bigways, freeflying, advanced canopy piloting? No way. I've averaged less than 50 jumps per year. Work schedule, weather, living in Wisconsin, all that. My skills aren't where I wish they were, nor where they would be if I was able to jump more. But I keep it small and keep it simple. And I know my limitations and do what I need to do to keep it safe. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 10. Stalin killed a lot of people for a lot of reasons. Supposedly, he sent one guy to Siberia (NOT naked, but it was still a virtual death sentence) for being the first one to stop clapping after a speech (or maybe it was for being the first to sit down after a standing ovation). It wouldn't surprise me at all that he executed or "gulaged" priests for being priests, or lay people for promoting religion, but I agree that the "Door to door, yes or no question" is overstating the point. Russians aren't stupid. They would know perfectly well how to answer that sort of question. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 11. Clicky fixed. Cool video. Nothing new or special, but very nicely done. Definitely worth 3 minutes. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo
  12. Thanks for posting those. Even though we had discussed him numerous times, I hadn't seen a picture of him before. Still having trouble accepting it. Still asking "why?" 13. Don't laugh. You think hitting the pointy tips of raindrops at terminal is bad? Try stingers. I was thinking the same thing. But the bee would have to be going head-down in order to hit the stinger. And I think bees tend to be more towards the conservative side, not the edgy, aggresive, cutting edge kind of stuff like freeflying. At least every bee I've ever seen was on it's belly. 14. I've got the new kind from CYPRES (Airtec), with my new Infinity (Velocity Sports) and Skysystems (They were giving them out at SDC Summerfest). They are really nice. 16. If you are able to do a tandem (or when you are), make sure you take the opportunity to use it as a learning experience, not just a "get back up in the sky" thing. Remember, the tandem was originally designed to be the same sort of dual instruction that student pilots receive. Use it. Make sure you have an instructor who understands what you need and can give it to you. You've had landing issues in the past. Make sure you do a lot of practice flares up high. You won't get the sight picture/height judgement of the real landing, but you will get the feel for the flare, and an understanding of the pendulum effect and what happens if you let up on the toggles. You will also get one good shot at the sight picture, height judgement and timing for the landing. You may find you want to do more than one tandem. There's nothing wrong with that. 17. Well, there's a great ongoing cartoon in the Intro/Greets forum by a newbie. She has made some fabulous drawings of her progression. She has some other stuff that isn't skydiving related on her blog too. http://tailotherat.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html I think something like that would be cool. 18. So, something perry did not do, in a state that people support capital punishment, makes him look like a dick? I could see coming down on the person that used race at the sentencing hearing and havig a judge review it, but this does not make perry a dick. This make Perry look like someone that upholds the laws that the people of his state support. Perry knew about the statements made and it was pointed out to him how it could have influenced the jury during sentencing. He could have granted the stay and ordered a review but he chose not to. He chose to allow a man to face execution knowing full well that he may not have received a fair sentence. That does not make him look like a dick. It only comfirms what people already know...that he is a dick. The same "expert" made similar statements in 5 other sentencing hearings. The other 5 were reviewed and resentenced. This one wasn't. He's guilty as sin, and probably will end up being executed. But having statements made by "expert witnesses" that a black man is more likely to be violent in the future because he is black is a pretty good reason to review the sentencing. 19. Oh, no! This has been a really difficult summer for me and my plans to meet her at various times kept getting put off. We had some great PM discussions about a lot of different things. She was a great shoulder to lean on in times of trouble. My deepest condolences to her family and especially to Braden. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 20. It would be a lot lower if the officers were trained on that type of course. Many aren't. Those types of training facilities are really expensive and not very common. The training has improved greatly from where it was, but it still has to stay within (shrinking) departmental budgets. Unfortunately, it is dependent on available funds, available facilities and the quality of the training officers. There are two local departments (there used to be three) that train at "my" range (I'm a range officer there). The training for one department is far more of the "Stand there and shoot at the target" kind, while the other has an imaginative and innovative training officer. Fortunately, the two training officers share thoughts and ideas so both of the departments take advantage of some of the really cool improvisations the one guy has come up with (not all are his own ideas). Movable walls that attach to tires - they can be put up in various arrangements to practice different scenarios and then taken down and stored away. Reactive targets based on balloons and cardboard boxes - the balloons are inside small holes in the boxes so that when the "vital area" of the balloon is hit the target drops. They put T-shirts on the boxes too. Moving targets controlled by clotheslines on pulleys - the trainees not shooting are put to work pulling on the ropes controlling the targets. They do a really good job making the targets hard to hit. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo
  21. I think that if faced with a guy that has a gun and he is trying to kill you... The guy with a gun stands a much better chance than the guy without a gun. whoa whoa hold up, that's not what I meant and I think everyone knows that. Intentional or not, I don't appreciate my words being twisted. We're not talking chances of survival, the entire report was based on accuracy levels when under fire. So let me put this clearly with no room for misinterpretation: If a police officer has a 15% chance of their bullet hitting their target when under fire, it stands to reason that a (relatively untrained) civilian will have a significantly smaller probability of hitting their intended target when also under fire. That's all I said, don't twist it to support something completely unrelated please. You seem to think that being a police officer means that they are "highly trained" and experts in shooting. Not my experience. While some police officers are highly proficient shooters, who practice often and are interested in maintaining a high level of skill with their firearms, many are not. I've watched them train and qualify. Some are doing quite well to get most of their shots onto the sillouhette at 7 yards (standard distance) during slow, aimed fire. Some barely qualify. Keep in mind that the firearm is a very, very small part of their job and most officers never fire a shot during their entire career. The same is also true among CCW holders. Some are very proficient shooters, others less so. Some shoot competitively, under high levels of stress and at moving targets. Others not so much. BUT... The civilians who are disciplined enough to carry on a regular basis are usually disciplined enough to maintain their training. Those who are too lazy to shoot on a regular basis will often give up carrying the weapon after the novelty has worn off. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 22. Yes. The trim tab acts sort of as an elevator on the elevator. Think how a surface the size of the elevator controls the pitch of the entire plane and you can see how a surface the size of the trim tab can affect the elevator (which then affects the pitch of the whole plane). I'm still hearing only 3 deaths, with 12 critical. Although not any consolation to those who are affected by the deaths, it seems incredibly lucky that it wasn't a lot worse. 23. Solos may get a little repetitive (I don't find them boring, just unproductive), but it doesn't cost any extra to find a friend to jump with. You don't need "expensive freefly or formation training" to jump with one or two other people. That's basic stuff you should be able to do as a licensed jumper. Lots of DZs offer load organizing for all levels of experience. I've been to a few different places and have yet to have a problem finding a couple people willing to make at least a couple jumps with me. 24. Did anybody else notice the Aerodyne ad on the back cover of Parachutist this month? I understand publishing lead times and such. It was still ironic. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo
  25. It also says in the book that Ho Chi Minh sent infected women to have sex with the French army so as to remove them from the battlefield. All is fair in love and war. Or maybe both at the same time. JerryBaumchen Supposedly the CIA ran a brothel in either Laos or Cambodia targeting the NVA/Viet Cong during the 60's for the exact same reasons.
