To show the "Chairborn Rangers" what our troops are dealing with...
Hooknswoop replied to rhino's topic in Speakers Corner
They signed up to defend this country, to defend freedom. Soldiers are not given a choice about war, that is up to politicians. If you felt the war in Iraq was justified, would you be praising the soldiers? Don't saddle them with the consequences of a decision they didn't make. They are doing their duty the best they can. I’m guessing you never served. Derek -
It isn't as hard as just trying to estimate how far a stationary object is away, but adding in other deploying canopies, the time the canopy takes to descend after deploying along with the canopy size and wing loading makes it a lot easier. ***You may think you are good at it, but when was your estimating ability actually tested for accuracy? All the time when I talked witht he jumper afterwards. Derek

That is a definate advantage. Did the cutter rotate 90-degrees while the reserve was packed? Derek

Not hard to guage what altitude someone deploys at. Watch enough deployments and you'll get good at it. Is it your opinion that the BSR's should be done away with? Derek

AAD's & Personal Acceptable Risk Thresholds
Hooknswoop replied to Hooknswoop's topic in Safety and Training
It's been shown over and over that if you find yourself low, you will go for your main. Derek -
This any help? http://www.relativeworkshop.com/pdf_files/09110.pdf Derek

One cutter with 2 blades isn't redundancy, if one blade fails to cut the loop, so does the other. I don't see any advantage. Derek

Visual vs. Digital Altimeter - Swoop entry
Hooknswoop replied to efex's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
By seeing the same sight pic every time. What difference does it make if it 600 or 800 feet? As long as it is the same sight pic every time. Use the altimeter as a tool, but realize it's short comings. Derek -
Visual vs. Digital Altimeter - Swoop entry
Hooknswoop replied to efex's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
There is a huge difference in quality of aircraft altimeters and skydiving altimeters. Also, aircraft altimeters have inspection requirements, skydiving altimeters do not. Do not rely on your altimeter to land by. Your eyes should always be your primary altitude reference. Derek -
AAD's & Personal Acceptable Risk Thresholds
Hooknswoop replied to Hooknswoop's topic in Safety and Training
She would probably have survived that jump if she did have an AAD, but she didn't ever need an AAD as a crutch to make a jump. This is the point you continue to fail to understand. You think it is about having an AAD or not. It isn't. It is about needing the AAD to make a jump or not. Derek -
The flip side of the coin is, if you remove all the rules, will people be safer than before? Imagine driving without any rules. Derek

I confirmed with the FAA today that they no longer publish all the test questions anymore, for any test. They omit similar questions. Derek

AAD's & Personal Acceptable Risk Thresholds
Hooknswoop replied to Hooknswoop's topic in Safety and Training
If a 100-way is out of my comfort zone, but within my abilities, but I do the 100-way because of the Cypres, isn't that using an AAD to move outside my comfort zone also? Derek -
AAD's & Personal Acceptable Risk Thresholds
Hooknswoop replied to Hooknswoop's topic in Safety and Training
How can you interpret "Everyone should jump w/ an AAD. AAD's are a good thing." as encouraging people to jump w/o an AAD? Unless you tell someone, no one can tell if you are depending on your AD or not, IMO. I thin I said in my first post in this thread. Derek -
AAD's & Personal Acceptable Risk Thresholds
Hooknswoop replied to Hooknswoop's topic in Safety and Training
Of course not. But it doea happen and that is what I am talking about. It shouldn't happen, but it does. If you agree with that, then we agree and can end this. No, I don't. How many times have I said everyone should jump w/ an AAD in this thread alone? Derek -
AAD's & Personal Acceptable Risk Thresholds
Hooknswoop replied to Hooknswoop's topic in Safety and Training
And using a safety device to exceed a person's risk/benefit limit or to compensate for lack of ability or other's lack of ability is also poor judgement. Derek -
According to http://av-info.faa.gov/data/knowledgetestguide/faa-g-8082-15a.pdf The FAA no longer publishes all the test questions for written tests. I am checking to see if the test question bank has been reduced or if the FAA doesn't publish all the questions anymore. Derek

AAD's & Personal Acceptable Risk Thresholds
Hooknswoop replied to Hooknswoop's topic in Safety and Training
I didn't ask for your risk tolerance, you volunteered it. It is a normal reaction to not want to admit to yourself or anyone else that you are dependant on your AAD. I am not asking for anyone’s risk tolerance, just suggesting they think about it and if an AAD should affect it. Honestly thinking about how much risk you think is acceptable and how an AAD affects you decision making process is healthy. You didn’t answer if I am correct about your opinion. Derek -
Don't ever stand next to the propeller of an aircraft. Derek

AAD's & Personal Acceptable Risk Thresholds
Hooknswoop replied to Hooknswoop's topic in Safety and Training
No, the vehicles are very different. A better analogy is does the motorcyclist that drives fast w/ a helmet, but within their risk/benefit maximum witha helmet. I don't think a helmet is comparable to an AAD since it is a lot less likely to fail to operate than an AAD. Derek -
AAD's & Personal Acceptable Risk Thresholds
Hooknswoop replied to Hooknswoop's topic in Safety and Training
Too high of a chance of a collision with one or more other vehicles. Not worth it to them to drive that fast. Because an airbag shouldn't allow them to drive faster than they think is safe for them. Derek -
AAD's & Personal Acceptable Risk Thresholds
Hooknswoop replied to Hooknswoop's topic in Safety and Training
Group 3 (which includes me): Think that SOME of the people in group one come to THAT conclusion differently. Too many are and don't even realize it. It takes first understanding the difference, which cleary isn't easy for everyone and second an honset self evauluation. We have one person that posted that coach freefly jumps are not worth it because of the risk of collision, but will do them with an AAD. If that isn't EXACTLY the same as saying, "I won't drive on the freeway because it is too risky for me, but I'll drive on the freeway if I have an airbag.", I don't know what is. They are more jumpers that do exactly the same thing. Derek -
AAD's & Personal Acceptable Risk Thresholds
Hooknswoop replied to Hooknswoop's topic in Safety and Training
I have never criticized anyone for jumping with an AAD. And then they would have driven more safely until they had a car with an airbag? How would the invention of the airbag cause someone to drive more safely? Discussing what they would have done before they were invented is irrevelent. Can anyone explain to me the difference between driving riskier because of an airbag and doing riskier skydives because of an AAD? I think we all agree that driving riskier because of an airbag is silly. Hence, I think, doing riskier skydives because of an AAD is silly. Derek -

Still no one explains the difference. Derek -
AAD's & Personal Acceptable Risk Thresholds

I think you meant, "with the enhancement on more risky jumps", yes? Then what is the problem with driving your car faster, more riskier because you have an airbag? Derek
