I think we can agree that you should ask your rigger questions and then ask a lot of "why"'s when you get the answers. If someone says something is crap, fine, but they should have some very good reasons. If they don't have very good reasons, you should consider their opinion suspect. Derek
-
If someone isn’t all that knowledgeable about gear, they should listen to an expert, a rigger. Same way an inexperienced canopy pilot should listen to an Instructor about what canopy and size they should buy and how they should fly it. No reason to re-invent the wheel again. Derek

How am I supposed to "field a slate of candidates"? If despotism is reduced injuries and fatalities from people flying canopies they aren't ready for, then yes, I want despotism. So your data showing that the majority of jumpers do not want a WL BSR is based on election results when you don't even know how many people ran that were pro WL BSR and how many were anti WL BSR? Doesn't seem like very accurate to me. If that is all you have, you don't have any data. Derek

http://www.precision.aero/servicebulletins.htm They have been several that came apart on opening. Some inside max weight/speeds, some outside max weight/speeds. Derek

You can only remove and install Rapide links so many times before the threads wear out. Slider bumpers must be replaced as they wear out. Slinks will last a long time. It is a good idea to replace them when re-lining a canopy, just as it is a good idea to replace Rapide links when re-lining a canopy. They are both wear items: advantage: no-one. Derek

Raw materials they have to pay for and then pay someone to make into Slinks. No idea what it costs them to make, but they are worth what they are worth. I never based my decision on what life saving gear to buy based on what was cheapest. Didn’t YOU say “And think about it. Is that how you choose gear? BY WHICH ONE IS CHEAPER TO PACK? That attitude is death on a stick.” I’m afraid you are showing your ignorance when it comes to Slinks. The reserve Slinks ARE made from a different, stronger, material. Have you even seen a set of Slinks? I stand by my statement, Slinks are better than Rapide links. As for the argument, “What is better”, give me a break. A link that is stronger, lighter, less bulk, doesn’t damage slider grommets, are easier to install, etc, are better than links that are weaker, heavier, more bulk, damages slider grommets, more difficult to install, etc. Derek

I see, so you admit the data you offered to support your point is worthless? You listed the winners of the USPA election as data to prove that the majority of skydivers do not support a WL BSR. I don’t see how a list of the winners of the election supports that, nor has he shown how it does. As for your suggestion that I run, I can’t, I’m not a USPA member (and proud of that too). My second point was made very well by Likarock; Likarock said: What the majority wants may not be in the majority’s best interest. People continue to pound in under canopies they clearly are not ready for. You do not support a WL BSR and mandatory education/training with an option to test out and get waivered, but you have no other or better solution to fix the problem that you say doesn’t exist. You seem to be OK with the status quo. Derek

Are there skydivers without injuries?
Hooknswoop replied to Don.Key's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
3333 jumps, no injuries. Derek -
LOL Works for me. Rapide links still work. Slinks are just better. Derek
-
OK, so if I narrow the statement down by (specifing the application) from "Slinks are better than Rapide links", to "Slinks are better for attaching a main or reserve canopy to risers in sport skydiving than Rapide links because they are stronger, less bulky, easier to install and inspect, don't damage the slider grommets, etc", would that work? Derek

The difference between a Spectre and Velocity is like the difference between a Slink and a Wrap-it soft link. The difference between a round and square is like the difference between a Slink and a Rapide link. New vs. old technology. Soft links are an improvement and better than Rapide links like squares were an improvement on, and better than rounds. If I am wrong, then I am in the majority, 81% at last count. Derek
-
Then why aren't more people jumping round mains if ram-airs aren't better? Derek
-
Para gear lists #4 Rapide links as $1.50 each. Times 4 = $6.00. Slinks for a main are $25.00 and $30.00 for a reserve. Different manufactures make different risers and even different 3-rings. Dive loops, toggles, etc are all different. The trade off for eliminateing the links isn't worth the difficulting in swithing risers/canopies. Down time and cost. Derek

No, I got flowers sent to me without a name on the card It rarely works out to day something. Derek
-
I see what you are saying, but someone's comfort level with gear doesn't change if the gear is better or not. Some people are more comfortable with a round reserve. That doesn't make round reserves better than square reserves. I can see why someone would stay with something that works and they are comfortable with, but that doesn't make a round reserve better than a square reserve. Someone may be comfortable with an old modified B-4 and a chest mount with round canopies, but that doesn't mean a Vector III with square canopies isn't better. Derek
-
Say nothing. You'll only lose. And whatever you do, don't send the guy flowers with no name on the card. Derek
-
Like Hookitt said, it's been done. For main canopy, that would make it very difficult to replace the risers and for a reserve, very difficult to assemble or replace the reserve. Why would you want to integrate the lines directly onto the risers? Derek
-
Right. Whatever you think. Oops, right Soft links. Derek
-
What do you think? Derek
-
Slinks w/ hats do the same thing, only better. The bumpers don't wear out as fast and when they do, the Slink doesn't damage the slider grommet. Slinks slider stops don't need to be tacked and won't slide up the lines. They are also less bulky. That isn't a reason why Slinks are not better than Rapide links. And that is fine. Rapide links work. I haven't heard a single thing that Slinks don't do better than Rapide links, except damage grommets. SLinks are better than Rapide links. Brett says Slinks are not better than Rapide links, dismisses the evidence that they are better and offers no evidence that they aren't. Derek
-
Have you ever assembled or packed a PD reserve with Rapide links? Derek
-
He posted the evidence to back it up. Click the link. Of course you didn't believe that Slinks are stronger than Rapide links even when given the evidence so I doubt you'll believe this either. I would think as a rigger you would know that stowing the excess brake material in the riser loop for the link is not a good idea, for Rapide links or Slinks. You do keep up to date, right? You seem to believe anything negative about Slinks without evidence, but even with evidence, won't believe anything positive about Slinks. You still have not posted a single reason why Slinks are not better than Rapide links. 6 to 0, Slinks win. Derek Derek

From FAR Part 105: "Approved parachute means a parachute manufactured under a type certificate or a Technical Standard Order (C-23 series), or a personnel-carrying U.S. military parachute (other than a high altitude, high speed, or ejection type) identified by a Navy Air Facility, an Army Air Field, and Air Force-Navy drawing number, an Army Air Field order number, or any other military designation or specification number. " The military rigger doesn't know what he is talking about. Derek

I found the way to make the neatest stows is fold the lines to the length you want (not too long), put the rubber band around the stow including your thumb. Hold the stow with your other hand to remove your thumb from the stow. Derek
