Like everyone already described, either a BOC w/ a reserve-side-main-pull or a normal BOC is used. I have deployed students from the reserve side using both systems. With the reserve-side-main-pull, I would reach across and just pull the PC out of the BOC if I could. It tends to hesitate a bit. The BOC will still be connected by the lower edge, so it sort of flops open and once the air catches it, it deploys. Teaching a student using BOC has several advantages. 1) No transitin jump/transition training, they learn on what they will jump after student status 2) They can't see the handle, so they don't de-arch looking for it. 3) The hand-deploy PC doesn't tend to get caught in their burble like spring loaded PC's do. Although I have great video of a student placing a PC in their burble and getting a hesitation rivalling a sp[ring loaded PC, but that is rare. 4) They learn about BOC as a student, so when they buy their own gear, they don't need further training to know what their BOC is/how it works. 5) No lost rip cords Hook

Have you jumped your reserve?
Hooknswoop replied to bwilling's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
PD reserves aren't Z-P. They are made from F-111 (Exacta-Chute material), same as Tempos. The only reserve I know of that has Z-P in it is the -MZ, with a Z-P top skin. F-111 isn't actually used in canopies, but the term has stuck, like Zerox. Hook -
I packed a line-over on an intentional cutaway jump. I put a steering line between the 4th and center cells of a PD-170. Came out of the bag spinning w/ a line-over. Hook

Have you jumped your reserve?
Hooknswoop replied to bwilling's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
2 rides on a PD-143R 2 Rides on a TR-375A 7 Rides on a MR-109-M (one landing at 5400ft MSL) 1 ride on a Fury 220R No problems so far. Landed within 10ft of where I intended to, standing up, every time. Something to think about, the reserve PC in my old XRS was the same size as the reserve PC in my J4. The XRS PC was hauling out a light 109-M, the J4 PC was hauling out a heavy (Dacron lines) Fury 220R. Very noticeable difference in how much altitude used in getting the canopy out of the bag. Hook -

why dont we have BASE canopy equipment modifcations on our canopies?
Hooknswoop replied to Newbie's topic in Gear and Rigging
Tail gates aren't used for slider-up deployments. I think there are those BASE specific mods/gear beacuse there isn't a reserve in BASE. In skydiving there is a reserve and it different from mains, free-bag, line stowage pouch, F-111, etc. Why bother with all the extra stuff when line-overs are preventable and you have a reserve anyway? Left 180's. 530 jumps on my VX-60 @ 3.1:1 3150 jumps total. Hook

Too high, too low...need help with flaring
Hooknswoop replied to dzdiva's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Again, don't focus so much on when to begin the flare, the key to a good landing is finishing the flare just prior to touching down. The ideal time/altitude to start the flare will depend on the canopy and wingloading. Like Hookit said, it doesn't matter what the winds are doing, that won't affect when to start the flare only how much to flare. First part of the flare stops downward (vertical) speed, second part of the flare stops foward(Horizontal) speed. Look at swoopers, the flare a bit to get the canopy to plane out and stop it's descent, then continue to flare to stop it's foward speed. (And keep it horizontal). All canopies land this way, most just pass through the stop descent/plane-out/stop foward speed very quickly. How far from a stop sign do you begin applying the brakes? Depends on how good the brakes are, how heavy the vehicle is, how fast you are going, and how much of a hurry you are in. The first time you drive someone else's (or a new) car and you want to stop, you apply the brakes, then adjust how much pressure you apply to the pedal based on the result from the initial result from the first bit of pressure you put on the pedal. If the car is slowing faster than you expected (their brakes are better/more sensitive/lighter car, etc) you hold the pressure on the pedal, wait, then more slowly than your are used too, apply more pressure to bring the car to a stop. Same technique for landing a canopy. Begin the flare at 8-12 ft-ish, then adjust the speed/rate of the flare to finish the flare just before you touch down. Biggest thing is to trust that the canopy WILL stop when you flare. I see people that don't trust their canopies, they see the ground rushing up at them and they flare hard and stop, 10+ feet off the ground. Practice flares will help, feeling the canopy stop as you flare will help you trust it. Hook -
Too high, too low...need help with flaring
Hooknswoop replied to dzdiva's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
It doesn't matter too much when you start your flare, but when you finish your flare is important. A drill I use for teaching how to flare is to have the jumper stand at the top of a flight of stairs with their arms over their head, in the "Full Flight" position. Then have them walk quickly down the stairs and "flare" as if they were under canopy. At first they usually finish their flare 7-8 steps from the floor. So I tell them to jump from there. They of course don't jump, but then they realize that is where the "canopy" would have stopped if they had actually been landing a canopy and finished the flare that high. Back up the stairs for another try and they finish the flare on the last step. Works wonders for understanding how to flare a canopy for landing and getting the visual picture. "Stairs, the canopy pilot's wind tunnel" Also, I explain flaring a canopy is similar to pulling up to a stop sign in a car. Apply brakes (flare) as neccesary to stop the car even with the stop sign (the ground), not short of it and not past it into the intersection. Vary/adjust the speed of the flare as necessary so that you will finish the flare just before you land ( 6-inches-ish). Hook -
They offer Tandems skydives, but you have to go to Brush to actually do the tandem skydive. They are not a USPA Group Member DZ, nor are any of their Instructors USPA Instructors. They claim you can get an "A" license (with less than 20 jumps), but they don't have a USPA Instructor that can issue an USPA "A" License. They claim they First Jump Course is 5 Hours long, they are closer to 1.5-2 Hours long. The DZO's USPA ratings were not renewed this year (2002).

good place to buy outerwear (ski stuff, etc)?
Hooknswoop replied to mountainman's topic in The Bonfire
WOOHOO....this means you are taking me snowboarding in your car So just drop me off at copper (my season pass is there), at oh about 8am and pick me up at 3ish...I should be good and tanked by then and not feeling a single bruise. Oops this is Kelli by the way, didn't realize that Derek's computer didn't really log me on. Although I'm sure Derek would take you up on the ride too. -
I recommend un-packing everything and putting it all in a large garbage bag if you aren't going to jump the rig before the next re-pack. Nothing on the spring to prevent it from getting bent or damaging the reserve PC material. Unpacking so that rubber bands don't degrade and damage anything (rubber reacts w/ brass), take the tension off the reserve safety stow. Seperating the reserve from the Cypres, if installed, elliminates the risk of damaging the reserve canopy if the batteries leak. Would leaving it packed really hurt anything? Probably not, just my preference. Hook

National Director Write-ins?
Hooknswoop replied to Hooknswoop's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I am filling out my Election 2003-2004 form and there are 12 listed ND candidates. I voted for 5 of them. I have 1 write-in. I need to know who else is running as a ND write-in. Feel free to throw in your opinion of the Write-in too. I need 2 more names. Interesting that there is only one region w/ two names on the ballot and one region with no names, this isn't counting write-ins. Not much of a choice. Thanks, Hook -
dz's and s&ta's charging $ to sign prof card?
Hooknswoop replied to skydiveoc's topic in The Bonfire
Once again, I don't agree w/ the idea of S & TA's charging to sign something off, but what BSR are they violating. You can't arbitrarily revoke an Instructor's (or S & TA's) rating. Show me in the S & TA's Handbook or the SIM's what rule they violated and I'll be the first to e-mail/call USPA to report this. Another example, should a DPRE sign off peeople to be riggers out of the goodness of their heart? DPRE's charge for their services, why not S & TA's? This is where the sport is headed as it gets more and more commercialized and loses the "club" atmosphere. Hook -
dz's and s&ta's charging $ to sign prof card?
Hooknswoop replied to skydiveoc's topic in The Bonfire
By the same token, is it implied in the S & TA Handbook that the S & TA can't/shouldn't charge for their services? Illegal AFF types of violations where USPA chose not to do anything about it. Incidents of BSR violations and the action taken by USPA should be public knowledge for two resons. 1) If people realize that USPA will come down on BSR violators, then people will tend to no violate them. If I had never heard of anyone getting a speeding ticket and I knew people that exceeded the speed limit, what is there to stop me from speeding besides my own conscience? 2) It would let people know what DZ's have a history of violating the BSR's. I agree that a public execution is over-kill for an S &TA charging to sign off a license, and a conversation would be best, but what can you say to the S & TA? "You shouldn't do that"? Response: "Why not?" "Well.......because you shouldn't". The USPA can't revoke their S & TA status if they didn't actaully do anything wrong. I see this as an indication of whre skydiving is going and how USPa is not at the helm. Hook
