  1. If the receiver can receive more than one satellite at a time, it's accuracy goes up. The "multiplex" GPS receivers are more accurate and update faster because they can receive multiple signals at once, instead of bouncing from satellite to satellite. WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation System) capability also increases accuracy. The military GPS I have used, could accept a "fill" that filtered out the erroneous signals from the satellites. It had a mode, which if you weren't moving, could define the position of the unit to 10 cm. I used that function when placing the panel and Cole-man lantern the Apaches used to bore-sight their lasers. They knew their position from their GPS, and I radioed the coordinates of the panel. Simple math told them the distance between them and the panel. Then they would lock on the panel, using the heat source of the lantern, and "lase" it. The laser would tell them the distance, which they would adjust based on the GPS calculations. Aviation units are expensive because of the databases, maps, capabilities, features, and information stored in them, especially IFR units, which have to be updated occasionally to be legal to use for IFR navigation. Not all GPS receivers are built equal. Hook
  2. It used to be a JM could do everything an I could, except teach the FJC and sign someone off the self JM. They could supervise a student within their discpline(i.e. S/L, AFF, IAD), clear the student to the next level, etc. Hook

  4. Based on your landings, you got some less than great advice before. The 190 may be OK, but what is wrong with using a 210 for a while. It will help your confidence and allow you to develop your canopy piloting skills and based on that experience you will be better equipped to determine when you are ready for a smaller canopy. All I know for sure is that the 169 was too small. Hook

    Talon FS

I put together a T6 FS 3.0 last weekend with a PD-160R. If your Safire is not the "2", then it is closer to a 174, same as mine and will go in a T6 FS 3.0 OK. Hook
  6. What happened? Why do you keep thinking smaller? Get the 210-ish and a PD-193R, or similar. Hook
  7. Gear design. Main and reserve canopies. Container design. The one advantage the Strong had over everyone else, drogue attachment location, was solved in the Sigma. Hook
  8. The news said the storm will let up tomorrow night. Another 18 inches tonight and another 10 inches tomorrow....... Hook
  9. A blizzard warning is in effect for the area. Skykitty and I just got back inside from playing in the 2-4 foot deep snow. Fox (the dog) didn't care for it She kept running back up stairs. They actually shut down I-70. Hook
  10. It is hard to tell in the video. I couldn't see for sure if he got on his rear risers or not. It kinda looked like he got on his rears, but again, I can't tell for usre. Thanks for clearing it up. Hook
  11. I didn't really try to figure why he got in a high speed stall, just was trying to figure if he was or not. So I think SkymonkeyOne, iamdrennan, and I all think he was in a high speed stall. Any's input would be helpful too. Hook
  12. Looks like he was on the rear risers in a high speed stall. Anyone else? Hook
  13. Take a look a a PD reserve slider. Properly re-inforced a hole in the slider works great for making a canopy open faster. Hook
  14. I have have seen probably thousands of deployments on video, some of them very hard. I have never seen nor do I know of anyone with video of line dump. Line dump gets blamed for hard openings all the time, yet I have never seen it. The locking stows would have to come un-done and the canopy would have to come out of the bag and begin to inflate before line stretch in order for line dump to cause a hard opening. In extreme cases (locking stows far apart on a large D-bag, heavy lines, loose stows, and a very big PC) maybe, but I still doubt it. Show me the video! Hook
  15. I am Eclipse, Vector, and Sigma rated. I have found the Eclipse to be a lower quality copy of the Vector. The Vector is OK. The Sigma is simply impressive. I would consider the Sigma to be like having a ram-air main, and anything else a round main. They both work, but how many people would choose a round over a ram-air? Sure they cost more, but so do ram-air. They are worth it (ram-airs and Sigmas). I have refused to get my Strong rating and never will. Hook
  16. Can you give more details of these reserve mals/problems? Hook
  17. I would either build a disposable D-bag and PC or use an old D-bag and PC. I might find it or I might not, like a free-bag. Another option is to have some direct-bag static line you. I don't think billy would let you get away with this (static lining) and that would be my fault . So best option is old/disposoble D-bag and PC. You can tie a long peice of Spectra to the D-bag and stow the extra line in with the suspension lines so that the D-bag trails behind you on opening, but be careful. Have Dr. Bob rig something like that up for you. Hook
  18. The -MZ has a ZP top skin, the -M does not. The -M and -MZ do not have bridle attachment points for use as a main. It can still be done though. Hook
  19. I completely agree. I can get hard openings from a reserve packed in a main D-bag with tight stows and a soft opening with a Stiletto packed in a reserve free-bag with a velcro pouch and a safety stow. I have done both. Same thing for PC size, collaspable PC's anyway. Once the canopy is out of the bag, the collaspable PC doesn't affect the opening. It does affect how quickly the line stows come un-done, but not how hard it opens. PD says that tight line stows are a must, they also say Sabres don't open hard. Hook
  20. Some canopies (smaller) won't plane out w/o riser or toggle input. Nice swoop Sky! Hook
  21. http://www.pia.com/SSK/cypres/cyp16.htm Contains tips on turning the Cypres off. Hook
  22. Turn-around times seem to be close to sea-level times. I usually jump from a Caravan that routinely gets 0.3 (18minutes) turn-around times. That is total tach time from take-off to landing. Standard price in CO is $20.00. Hook
  23. Yes, I have had a set Cypres batteries not last two years. I have also seen others have batteries not last the 2 years. Hook
