  1. I've retro-fitted a few recently and the kits were for full hard housings, no hybrids. the PMP is dated Spet 27, 2001 and is Procedure #1243A. Hook
  2. Javelins don't have a tube in the yoke. The release cable should pass OVER the reserve ripcord housing, above the vertical bar-tack, then outside of the horizontal bartack and into the soft housing. This is from PG. 46 of the old (Feb 93) Javelin manual. I definately recommend the retro-fit to hard housings. Hook
  3. That is what it means. Is there something I missed? Edit: I was actually trying to be nice and not name the DZ in question, not trying to slam all NV/Las Vegas Area DZ's. I think everyone knows which DZ doesn't allow fun jumpers, but is a GM of USPA that "Keeps skydivers skydiving". Hook
  4. I like the 'fist' for the pull signal. I first ran into it at LP last year. Hook
  5. I never suggested it wasn't a nice, family atmosphere, DZ. The web page definately gave the impression that it was. If someone goes in, will there be a 'no-skydiving' rule? Because of their rules, there are a lot of safe, experienced jumpers that could not jump there. Their rules are definately over the top. They have every right to make them, but they are being silly. Nothing over 1.5:1? C'mon. Their rules tell me that they think I am an un-safe jumper because I don't have an AAD and have above an 1.5:1 wingloading. That is close to being an insult and completely un-fair. Again, it is their DZ and they are free to make whatever rules they want and I am free to make fun of them for silly rules. It may be a fun place, but I'll never know, because they would not allow me to jump there, nor a lot of other jumpers. I went to another DZ a while back. On the waiver, they had a mandatory AAD rule. I told them I didn't have an AAD, please give me money back. They asked how many jumps I had and said, OK, you can jump. Hook
  6. You can only take that so far though. You can't use VX's as student canopys, because "they will be flying one eventually". I have seen ZP squares used for student canopies up to 1.2:1 wingloading, after 3 instructional tandems and a full 20-jumps under the supervision of an instructor program. Also, students don't fly how the Instructor teaches them. At least not a first. It takes a while. Hook
  7. I'm OK w/ this one Still good to go. Oops, that one prevents me from jumping there. But that is their choice. TSO weight or recommended weight? Can be two very different weights. I'm OK if it is TSO weight, but above the recommended. The Javelin has been re-TSO'd to 300lbs at 170 kts (any Javelin w/ a S/N higher that 22,900). So this one doesn't make sense to me. Well, it is their DZ. That is conservative for some, OK for others and too high a loading for the rest. Again, it is their DZ. I guess they will never have a boogie or anything. I'm a little over double that. That really limits who can jump there. Sounds like a NV DZ tactic to keep fun jumpers away. The DZO probably hooked in a Stiletto a long time ago and doesn't believe anyone should be over 1.5:1 because he can't do it. Oh well, I'll put this DZ on my list of DZ's to avoid. Edit to add: I've had tandems wingloadings of over 1.3:1. The staff's average jump per year: 183 jumps/year 93 jumps/year 61 jumps/year 67 jumps/year 67 jumps/year 43 jumps/year 54 jumps/year They don't jump very much. Hook
  8. Alpha's are gone. The Cobalt is the replacement, contact Atair. Hook
  9. I have seen a Stiletto 107 in an XRS. Worked fine until the bag ripped apart. Over-stuff too much and eventually it is gonna give. Hook
  10. 2 types of horse-shoe malfunctions. 1) PC still in BOC (or ROL), container open. 2) PC entangled with jumper, containr open. Both are preventable. Try to throw/clear the PC first. If unable, then no choice but to risk an entanglement and cutaway and fire the reserve into the mess. For a PC in tow, I reach back and pull the pin. 24 in ZP PC w/ a 7 ft bridle has eliminated any hesitations for me. Hook
  11. You're in a bind then. Either live with it, or get longer risers and pull down on a rear riser to reach the slider. Hook
  12. Any DZ's within 30 NM of the ranch? Hook

    PD Slinks

With the wider risers (1 23/32) the chances of the slider coming down on a skydiving rig is minimal. With a BASE rig and the associated openings, it is possible, and if it does, it could be very hard/impossible to release the brakes. Skydiving reserves can open very hard too, and I haven't heard of anyone being unable to fly their Slink-equipped reserve with the toggles. Some people want the advantages of strength and lower bulk, but don't pull their slider down. PD's SLinks are now shipped with cloth bumpers. I have been considering putting reserve Slinks on my BASE rig, with the bumpers. Hook
  14. I made the charts, one for canopy sizes (main and reserve) and another for harness sizes. While I was there I still had students pre-flight a silver-striped rig (170 main) instead of the white-striped rig (230 main). So even with color coding and a chart, it still happens. Hook

  16. Call the manufacturer of the canopy you wish to demo. Hook
  17. Nope, just looked at the pic in the magazine. Hook
  18. Ok, looking at the picture, I can see lines, probably Spectra, use for 3rd risers. On his right, the line goes from just above the "R" in Red, up slightly to just below the top of his helmet. On his left, the line goes Where the slider gormmets are on the risers, to about 4inches above the toggle, th eline is pointed at the "R" in Red. Looks like if he extended his arms anymore, then the lines would have a bend in them. Definately line 3rd risers though. Hook

    DOOM

Been reading Richard Marcinko books? Hook
  20. I've seen this happen, but not very often. If you bar-tack the finger-trap away from the loop, I would probably put a bar-tack next to the loop to prevent the possibility of the loop loosening and coming off the toggle. Hook
  21. ***Umm i've been told by my CI who's also a rigger that the drougue only collapses after the canopy is out of the bag unlike a sport rig. On the Sigma, Vector and Eclipse Tandem Systems, the drogue collapses before the canopy is out of the bag. Also, the drogue doesn't completely collapse. On sport systems the Pilot Chute doesn't collapse until after the canopy is out fo the bag. Hook
  22. The velcro toggle worked fine, it actually hung up a little not from the velcro, but from the tab freezing to the hood covering it. Also, the velcro would be harder to freeze, protected from the wind chill. Hook
  23. If you are doing it right, you do. It is refered to as 'flat tracking'. Create as much lift as possible to slow your fall-rate. Tracking is all about angle, not speed. Hook
