  1. That includes everyone. This is why I think WL restrictions set by each DZ is a bad idea. If it were a national standard, you could go to any DZ as long as you met the standard. If it varies by DZ, then you would have to check their policy before going to a new DZ, every time. Derek
  2. I couldn't change things and couldn't live with them the way they are, so I quit. I miss skydiving, a lot. Every time I get the urge to go jump and feel the cool air flowing by as I float through the sky, I remember that I have to go to a DZ to jump, and the feeling fades away. Derek
  3. I can't say anything about the 150 w/o seeing you fly the 170, but I think the 135 would be a bad idea. The 15 sq ft from the 150 to the 135 is about the same increase in preformance as the 20 sq ft from the 170 to the 150. Talk to the Instructors at your DZ and focus on the ones that either say "no" or "maybe" and find out why they say that. Edit: Why do you want to downsize?   5. Take a seam ripper to the bidle for about 4 inches where you want the window to be. Fold back under each side 1/4 inch and re-sew it. A slipperly kill line isn't the culprit. It might be too short though. Holding the bag in place pull tension on the base of the PC, simulating the force the PC puts on the bridle during deployment. The bridle will stretch. There should still be a litle slack in the kill line inside the PC. Sounds reasonable. Less friction would make it easier to cock itself. Derek
  6. I disagree. Try a stupid move w/ a Sabre 230, then try the exact same stupid move with my old VX-60. Let me know how it turns out. I think you'll find a significant difference. Derek

  9. The FAR is very clear; " §105.13 Radio equipment and use requirements. (a) Except when otherwise authorized by air traffic control -- (1) No person may conduct a parachute operation, and no pilot in command of an aircraft may allow a parachute operation to be conducted from that aircraft, in or into controlled airspace unless, during that flight -- (i) The aircraft is equipped with a functioning two-way radio communication system appropriate to the air traffic control facilities being used; and (ii) Radio communications have been established between the aircraft and the air traffic control facility having jurisdiction over the affected airspace of the first intended exit altitude at least 5 minutes before the parachute operation begins. The pilot in command must establish radio communications to receive information regarding air traffic activity in the vicinity of the parachute operation. (2) The pilot in command of an aircraft used for any parachute operation in or into controlled airspace must, during each flight -- (i) Continuously monitor the appropriate frequency of the aircraft's radio communications system from the time radio communications are first established between the aircraft and air traffic control, until the pilot advises air traffic control that the parachute operation has ended for that flight. (ii) Advise air traffic control when the last parachutist or object leaves the aircraft. (b) Parachute operations must be aborted if, prior to receipt of a required air traffic control authorization, or during any parachute operation in or into controlled airspace, the required radio communications system is or becomes inoperative." Yes, ATC did brodcast comms directed at the jumpship....."asking the jump plane to leave the area", not OK'ing the drop. If the pilot had comms w/ ATC, he would have had that information, therefore comms were NOT established. Pilots are charged with following the fAR's except in an emergency, and operating the aircraft safely, not just making a decision. The jump pilot violated FAR's, endagered his passengers and the passengers of Chris's aircraft. I also wonder how close the jumpers and jumpship came to the aircraft holding 1,000 ft below Chris. Imagine if the tandem had hit either airliner and brought it down. The FAA would likely simply ground all parachute operations and then, budget permitting, figure out how to allow skydiving again.   11. LOL, my point is the NOTAM system is messed up. That monstrosity of a NOTAM list is from the FAA's web page. A pilot that was actually flying that route might not have gotten the NOTAM (I don't know if there is one or not for SSM) even if there is one. If I was making that flight, I wouldn't have gone through all those NOTAMs. What a mess. DZ's can't rely on NOTAM's to inform pilots of their location and activity. I think USPA should step up and ensure that NOTAMS are current and discontinued for inactive DZ's. I think they should work w/ AOPA to educate pilots on the importance of the parachute symbols. They should also encourage DZ's to make sure their pilots are contacting ATC and finally educate jumpers on spotting for aircraft that could present a hazard. Derek
  12. How do you know he didn't check NOTAM's? Even he had checked the NOTAM's, he can still fly through uncontrolled airspace w/o talking to anyone. When I fly I sometimes contact approach for flight following, sometimes not. Sometimes it isn't worth it. Your profile says your home DZ is San Marcos. See if you can find a NOTAM for Parachute Operations for Skydive San Marcos. Not saying it doesn't exist, but give pilots a break. There are parachute symbols on Sectional maps, but they are a lot of parachutes at inactive DZ's and pilots aren't trained as to the importance of the symbol. So the symbols are ineffective. If they are ignorant of the risks but believe they can and have correctly assessed the risks, no one can convince them otherwise. You might as well try to convince that water isn't wet. They assign jealousy, ignorance, ego, etc to others comment about their canopy choice and their abilities because they feel they cannot possibly be wrong. There is another angle. Sometimes people do realize they are in over their heads with their small canopy, but their Ego and the desire to be praised by their peers overrides good judgement. They understand the risks, but place the 'cool factor' above safety. Do some research on young drivers and you will find extensive research and examples of this phenomena. I am well aware that a jumpship must contact ATC.): "This is a little off-topic, but I opened after a jump the other day (I was first out) and saw a small Cessna flying on-level with me, BETWEEN other canopies and me. It was close enough that I could actually see the pilot and read the tail number. This plane had basically come out of nowhere and flown through our jump run at opening altitude. What is the legal responsibility of a private pilot flying VFR, in relation to jump operations? Is he required to verify his flight path on a sectional or maintain radio contact with the controlling ATC? ATC didn't notify our pilot that we had traffic until we had exited, and because of his approach direction, we couldn't see him from the door. We're at a private airport that is currently only used for jump operations, but we sometimes get traffic from pilots trying to use our airport as a vector. What I want to know is if the pilot of that Cessna did anything legally wrong or if it was just dumb bad luck." Derek

  16. Oversteer is how much the canopy continues to turn after all control input is removed. For example, the Sigma tandem main has more oversteer than the Icarus tandem main. On the Sigmas I had to let the toggle up a full 180-degrees from where I wanted to roll out of a hard spiral. Derek
  17. Of course the rigger can decide/choose to re-pack the reserve if they feel necessary, but there is no requirement to re-pack it for a Cypres installation if the same rigger that packed it installs the Cypres. I didn't say he couldn't, just that he doesn't have to. Derek
  18. Actually I didn't want to pick on any specific DZ which is why I didn't name any DZ. For a long time they listed an otter w/o having a FLYING otter. I even fixed it when I realized they have a FLYING otter now. You would have a point if they never listed an Otter w/o having one, but they have. I used CO as the example because I know what jump ships are flying loads at each DZ. My point is a lot of DZ advertising is B.S. or misleading. Again, I didn’t single out any DZ nor was that my intention. It isn't HH's responsibility to update those listings, it is the DZ's. It is just funny that DZ's tend to list more jump ships than they actually have FLYING. I like the idea of calling ASC's 800 # and talking and talking. Why is so much DZ advertising obviously false?   19. LOL- If you can't jump out of it, it doesn't really count. And I gave credit where credit is due. They do have a flying Otter now. But the otter they have had listed for over a year hasn't flown a single load at the DZ. Derek

  21. If there are more jumpers than seat belts,the un-belted jumper(s) become projectiles in the event of a sudden stop (crash). It has happened before. We do not need to re-learn that lesson. Derek
  22. Define 'ground hungry'. There is 2 definitions in use. 1) gets to the ground quickly, or 2) has a steep glide angle. You can have a canopy w/o a steep glide angle that still gets to the ground quickly. Derek

  24. Under Tso C23D, the minimum TSO airspeed is 150 kts. So if they said it was tested to 150 kts, they meant TSO'd to 150 and tested at 180. There are 3 weights and speeds that can be listed. 1) tested to weight/speed 2) TSO'd weight/speed 3) Recommended max weight/speed Derek
