Drug issue.....should i tell the DZ owner???
Hooknswoop replied to SSkydiver's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Then quit jumping because that happens all the time. You can't atop it. either accept it or move on. There was 2 fatalities recently where the jumpers were high and drunk. Derek -

Anyone ever jumped a piper cub?
Hooknswoop replied to jumper03's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I know that the Cub I was flying required the pilot to be in the back seat for solo flying. Make sure you know which seat the pilot should be in for solo flight before you take off. Derek -
Will the S & TA ground you for pulling 1 foot too low? How about 2 feet? 500 feet? 100 feet? Same common sense would apply to a WL BSR. Derek

Anyone ever jumped a piper cub?
Hooknswoop replied to jumper03's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Kelli and I have jumped out of a Piper Cub. Remove the stick from the front and have the jumper sit backwards. Just leave the doors open and make sure the jumper knows what they can and can't step on/hold onto for exit. Because jump run is so slow (as is the climb to altitude), it is almost like a balloon jump. Lots of fun. I was going to do CReW with her, until she saw me coming and hauled ass. Derek -
That is my understanding and I totally agree, the type III is a bad idea and should never have been used on the -M's. Derek
-
Oops. I'll see what I can do, but no promises. Derek

I know they did that initially. They did that to the one I owned at the time and this one too. I thought they atarted replacing the tape after a while though. What does PA currently do for the SB for a canopy with the Type III tape? Derek
-
I have a MR-150-MZ in the loft and SB 1221 has been C/W, but it still has the Type III .75 tape for the line attachment points instead of the Type I .5625 tape. Didn’t PA start replacing the Type III with Type I when they would do the SB? I remember reading some te4st results that indicated that the second bar-tack didn’t increase the strength of the line attachment point and didn’t solve the problem. I am not real comfortable with the Type III tape. Derek

What would it take to have a Serial number search engine for every reserve canopy and container built (within say, the last 10 years) to return any SB’s/AD’s it is affected by? The rigger could grab the Reserve Packing Data card, verify the S/N’s, go to the container and reserve manufacturer’s web site, or a single “one-stop-shop” site, and enter the S/N’s to see if any AD/SB’s affect the equipment. How difficult would this be to set up and maintain? Maybe this could be something PIA could do? Derek

Javelins with adjustable main lift web...
Hooknswoop replied to kansasskydiver's topic in Gear and Rigging
Ask those riggers that won't pack them if they will still pack tandem rigs with Adjustable Main Lifts webs..................... Derek -
And if he was unstable for the reserve deployment, the reserve PC could have entangled on the jumper. Derek

I think the damage is where the line cascades into the upper control lines, not at the cat's eye for setting the brakes. Derek

Should have been in Incidents, but....
Hooknswoop replied to efs4ever's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
When you open the door, you need to wath the door as it moves to the open position to prevent hitting someone or dislodging a pin with the door. If you had been watching the door, you would have seen the other jumper grabbing the door. I have seen more than one person throw open the door without ever calling door or looking behind them to clear the door and drilling someone with the door. People are going to get their fingers smashed (especially on King Airs) by the door or hit by the door if the person opening the door doesn't look and clear the path of the door. Sorry about your thumb. Derek -
12-year old foam doesn't offer the comfort of newer foam. The routing of the cutaway cables is important for keeping pull forces low. I don't kniw if it available on-line, but Sun Path has a diagram of the correct cable routig from it's soft housings days. Derek

Anyone know how to rescend a Regional Director?
Hooknswoop replied to mikieB's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I think he is just mad that people got caught breaking the FAR's and the RD is taking action like she is supposed to. I am reminded of someone that complains to the police officer that they shouldn't get a ticket because other people were speeding too. I don't think he will post here defending why he thinks the RD is being unjust because he has nothing to back up that claim. It has been established, and he admitted in a PM, that Brush has a history of violating the BSR's. Sometimes you get caught and have to pay the price. Don't whine about it or blame the person doing the enforcing. I'm sure DJan would rather not have to deal with crap like this. Derek -
The turn in the video looked like a carve to me....... Derek

To prevent that from happening in the future, dirt dive your landings. Literally walk across the ground where you will be flying over, picturing your altitude, airspeed, and outs. Whenever I went to new DZ, I would walk the landing area, dirt diving my landings in 4 different directions, thinking about altitude, airspeed, and outs. I would look for obstacles and study the ground for holes, debris, etc. Planning a hp landing in the air over unfamilar ground adds risk. If you can walk the landing area and reduce your risk, why not? Oh ya, never hook towards an obstacle. Derek

Anyone know how to rescend a Regional Director?
Hooknswoop replied to mikieB's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Seems to me mikieb made some accusations “I was wondering how a USPA member like myself can hold a regional director responsible for unjust actions they have taken against individuals?”, but is unwilling to discuss those accusations. I even PM’d mikieb asking him what exactly the RD was doing and what the people in question were doing to deserve the attention of the RD. No response. I have it on good authority that jumpers have been jumping BASE rigs out of airplanes at Brush for a while. Now that there was an incident, people are trying to cover/hush it up and complain that the RD is being unfair by investigating this BSR/FAR violation. Seen that happen, in CO no less, before. Mikieb wants the RD to help with ‘Farmer McNasty’, but doesn’t want the RD to take action against those breaking BSR’s (which includes breaking FAR’s). Can’t have it both ways mikieb. Edit: And yes, dropping off a tandem with a BASE rig is against the FAR's. If you get caught, don't wine about consequences. Derek -
There are different max weights for reserves. 1) The TSO'd max weight. 2) The manufacturer's recommended max weight. 3) The maximum weight the canopy was drop tested with. Exceeding any of those can put you in a dangerious situation. If someone exceeds the max TSO'd weight for their gear, the rigger that packed it can't get in trouble. The rigger packs it and certifys it for emergency use, how it is used is up to the user, not the rigger. There is nothing in Part 65 or 105 that says you have to be withint he TSO'd limits for your gear. It probably should be in there, but it isn't. My advice is get a PD reserve. The open, fly and land better than any other reserve I have seen or jumped. They are also built very well. PD got it right a long time ago. Everyone else has been playing catch up with reserves. are icons set up for one pin or two pin cypress
Hooknswoop replied to Terminal-V's topic in Gear and Rigging
Or just overtighten the closing loop from the outside of the rig by 'the normal manner' to tighten a loose pc. Derek -

Hooknswoop replied to mikieB's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
What, specifically, are you referring to? Without details, we can't decide if you are justified in feeling the way you do or are "out of line". Are the Instructors in question violating the FAR's/BSR's? Derek -
Consider youself fortunate that I am not a Moderator. I would ban your IP address permantly. You whine that this free site isn't good enough for you? Go make your own. Good bye. Derek
