Good luck this weekend Billie!! You should talk to Dave Billings at our DZ. He's a PD rep and is the one who handles all the new/used rig transactions at the DZ. On another note, I don't know what size you're flying now but like an other poster said, Think about where you'll end up in 50-100jumps. I started jumping my rig at 35 jumps and just rented untill I felt ready to fly my set-up. I flew the 260- for AFF then 230 for about 10 solid standup landings. Then I went to 190 (we had no student/rental 210s at the time) and flew that from jump # 12 through # 27. 15 nice solid stand ups in different conditions. THEN at #28 started flying the 170s off the rental rack 'till my gear was airworthy. Point is like the other guy said, you're gonna end up with a smaller canopy sooner than it feels from here! BASE jumping. . . I had always wanted to do a skydive since before I turned 18. Birthdays came and went and I just didn't want to spend $200 to strap myself to some dude and jump out of a plane. The tandem thing just never really interested me. Fast forward to 2007. . . I was climbing El Capitan(3200' vertical wall) in Yosemite. We were about half way up at a bivy spot called "Dolt Tower" when I just hear "wwwwwwwwhhhhhhooooooooosssshhhh!!!!! and see a body falling perfectly flat throught the air!! Then "whack" canopy opens and all is quiet. the jumper landed safely and I looked at my buddy and was like. . ."Holy SHIT that was fucking SIIIICK!!" So, not more than 2 weeks later we were at the base of Hlaf Dome just waking up to climb at about 5am. I hear this noise and by the time I could pinpoint it he just trailed out of sight. I look up at the visor(2000' above) and see a lone figure just swan dive so friggin gracefully off the lip and then FLY !!! These guys were wingsuiting off this thing! I watched the wingsuiter fly for about 30 seconds before disappearing around a buttress. Never even saw the deployment! Again, I just looked at my buddy in awe and said "Dude, that was the coolest thing I've ever seen!!" So, fast forward to late July of '08. Again climbing. We were on the E. Face of Longs Peak (known as the Diamond). It's a magnificent wall with a 5.5mile hike to get to the base of it!! Just plain huge, beautfull, steep and, intimidating towering a good 1000' above the glacier and valley floor and as broad as it is tall. Well, it's 8:00am and we were about 300ft up a route that goes dead nutz up the middle when . . ."WWHHAAAABAAAMM" !!!! We nearly shit ourselves thinking it was a rockfall!! After the noise of the opening we looked out to see a canopy gracefully flying to the glacier in this beautifull alpine setting. . .I just looked at my buddy (the same guy as before) and said "Holy shit dude. . .I HAVE to do that!! That looked like the single, most fun thing I could imagine doing!!". He just looked at me like yeah right. and said "well fuck we better finish this route". Two weeks later I got paid and scheduled AFF. AFF Level 1 happened August 30th and I fell In LOVE with skydiving!!! Now with 137 jumps and just a handfull of BASE jumps, I still can't believe how fucking awesome this sport is (as well as how much I DON'T know and, still need to learn!!)!! So, that's my story! Not wife, but, I'm in your boat. My girl broke up with me last week because of my lifestyle. If I'm not skydiving or BASE jumping, it's rock/ice climbing, hiking, breakdancing etc. . . I just plain DO NOT sit around waste my life in front of a TV. And I will never make an exeption to that (unless I'm injured or sick I guess. . .) That being said I just threw her V-day present out the door of an airplane when she sent me the "text message" informing me of the discontinuance of our relationship!! Yeah for sure!! Not arguing that one bit! My point is that I don't believe that you can point the finger solely at the pot in his system. I mean, has every hook turn gone bad been a result of smoking pot?? Yeah maaaaaybe if he wasn't stoned he could've pulled it off or aborted in time to save himself (we'll never know) but my guess is that a turn too low typically has the same result. Alot of good discussion in here. Yes I am in the US but as another poster stated, Twin Falls and Moab are legal. And as far as I know Moab is not Indian Land. I do see what some other posters have said, regarding "specifics" of certain BASE jumps. That's all good. Any ways, I like the answers posted and I'm not saying the ENTIRE skydiving community hates BASE. But you do get the sense of distaste for it from some. . .obviously I'm not alone in that. These are what I'm talking about. . . To tell the truth our DZ's not so bad. My observation came from the general skydive community. Alot of the folks here are pretty receptive to it, if not enamored by it. But the feel you get from "some" or the little nips here etc. . . made me wonder? Why should someone have to whisper BASE, why do you go out back to to a drug - er- BASE transaction. . . Why does this seem like a four letter word in the skydive community?? Believe me, I know it's a whole different animal but some times when the word "BASE" is thrown out people cringe like their mother was just bad-mouthed. Where do you get to jump for $2.30? $14000 ÷ 23 (jump cost) = 608 jumps, not 6000. Also, $14000 ÷ $800 (tunnel hour) = 17.5 freefly hours 17.5 tunnel hours = 1200 jumps or so Hmmm...jumping is fun. But the tunnel sounds ok too, no? Yeah but you can't fly canopy in the tunnel!! That is seriously the reason why I only have a few minutes of tunnel time under my belt!! Edit: ALSO, I like the whole experience of skydives. I like paciking my rig and jurrying to get on the next load. I like the plane flight, and looking at the snow capped Rocky Mntns on the way to altitude. I like the visuals of spotty clouds an the Lz wayyyyy under foot! And most of all I loooooooooooove being OUTdoors!!! Not dissing tunnel goers (I had a blast the 2 times I went) but I'd rather spend the money on "skydiving".

I never thought I'd see the day when I saw a BASE post on DZ.com!!! I feel your pain though. . .I got my first jump last Sunday. It was off a 930' A. Then the weather moved in and it was all of 14 degrees yesterday!! Today it'll be a high of 22 but the wind forecast looks great so. . .Here comes the Frijol On a side note. . .our DZ won't send a load if it's below 32deg (F) on the ground That being said we've jumped in some COLD like -14 at alt. . .

I got an accont a WEEK ago and now I have 75 friends!!! Beats the hell outta high school when I only had a couple I agree waaayyy funner than myspace and a fun way to waste an INSANE amount of time!! I always catch my self checkin' in to see who's updated their status, written on walls etc. . . Not that this happens at work or anything Link To my Facebook!!
