What's wrong with that book? I only read the page you linked, but it makes sense to me. No controlling, no manipulating, no "trying to change them". Or worse, trying to "fix" them. Rather than treating your spouse like an underling or a child, you treat them like a partner. Unlike the link in the OP which seems to think the wife should be a slave. Yeah, yeah. I actually bought that book back in like 2003 when I was trying to do anything I could to try to stop my divorce. Whatever.... But.... I recently came across it while dusting my book cases and pulled it out. I flipped through it and gave it another thought because scuba boy and I had broken up and it wasn't pretty. Two people who are total control freaks just wasn't working. I kinda threw my hands up and told him, "You want control, you can have it. I'm tired of being a control freak at work all day and then coming home and still trying to bust balls." Once I decided he can "drive" the relationship, so to speak, I've felt better. I can relax driving home and when I get home I feel better. Frankly, I'm kinda like WTF was I thinking being a ball buster. I had nothing to prove. I just want someone who will treat me well and be respectful. It is gonna be a long road but I'm in no hurry and have no agenda. I'm just learning to relax and enjoy. Plus, my nurturing tendencies have come back out and I actually really like that.

+ 1 I tried to get my tubes tied at 22 years old and my gyno said no way, that I will probably change my mind. I sure did, but when we tried it didn't happen. I then scheduled it last spring and then backed out. Always be kinder than you feel.

I would think that the success stories are the exception... Honestly, the odds are stacked against them... Not speaking the language; different educational backgrounds; different belief/value systems; less access to funds, et cetera, et cetera. But that doesn't mean their contribution is worthless. This is why I have so much respect for the migrant farm workers who come to my town to bust their asses every year. My people came to the US from Italy, ended up here in my town to farm and bust their asses and break their backs like dogs just to provide for their family and give them a better life. Good people who didn't speak a word of English in the beginning, didn't take handouts, but they assimilated because they got respect from residents due to their work ethic and quality products. Now, we're one of the oldest, most respected and successful families in this town, and the state in one of the businesses our name is most known for. I am so proud of that. I often wonder when I see a group of migrant workers walking down the road going to Walmart, which one will end up staying here in NJ and becoming the next success story. Everyone has to start somewhere.
