"The Works" Staring Cal City's ol' Otter and C206
Skwrl replied to ZigZagMarquis's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
The best part about it (assuming they use the footage) will be a shot of the host annoucing "Welcome to Flock University!" The particular shot was taken while in mid-flight, while the host was in the Otter and the 206 was filming (in other words, the shot is being taken with the host almost in the door of the Otter, with a big old zoom lens). It was followed by some pretty solid flocking. I'm looking forward to it - with any luck the planes will not be the most interesting bit. -
I got an absurdly large policy, but I got it before I started. Once you start, you will need to (on most policies) disclose it - which will put you in a very expensive category, if they will insure you at all. My suggestion is buy before you start, and make sure the policy doesn't exclude death from sports (including "extreme sports" and "inherently risky activities") or from aviation accidents. I defer to the insurance brokers on the board, though. (Also, I assumed you are in the US.) Skwrl Productions - Wingsuit Photography Northeast Bird School - Chief Logistics Guy and Video Dork

You're missing an additional category, Jeff: My jump numbers far exceed my post numbers, and my postings still lack credibility... Skwrl Productions - Wingsuit Photography Northeast Bird School - Chief Logistics Guy and Video Dork

A curiosity question for those who know much about tracking and this stuff: What kind of glide ratios do these guys get? What kind of glide ratios do skilled trackers get, for that matter (assuming the trackers aren't wearing tracking pants and are wearing similarly spiffy red helmets and pants as these guys)? What are their respective fall speeds / times? I know proponents of atmo say atmo is "different" because atmo uses a steeper angle of attack (i.e., more head down) than a traditional track. But by "different", I don't know if they mean they go further, fall faster (or slower) or what? In short, what is the resulting difference in terms of flight characteristics between tracking and atmo? I'm not trying to stir up the whole "tracking/atmo" thing. I don't do either and therefore don't give a crap whether it's considered a subset of tracking, its own discipline, or they are both considered subsets of a new meta-category of skydiving that I shall call "Falling" (TM). I agree it's pretty to look at and it needs lots of skill I'm sure. I'm just curious about the physics of their glide as compared to wingsuiting. The article is a little misleading on one point. Phil Roberson shot the RW footage. Scotty Burns shot the wingsuit footage. Skwrl Productions - Wingsuit Photography Northeast Bird School - Chief Logistics Guy and Video Dork

22k, just off the coast of Arecibo, Puerto Rico, with flock of 5 or so wingsuiters... We were off shore about a mile, flew another mile with the plane, then turned around and blasted it back to the beach. Beautiful view. (In retrospect, it wasn't the smartest thing to do, in case, e.g., someone lost a bootie...) Skwrl Productions - Wingsuit Photography Northeast Bird School - Chief Logistics Guy and Video Dork

Ugh - the eagle just pulled ahead again. C'mon skydivers! Let's actually support one another instead of bickering (I know that's novel on dizzy.com, but work with me on this one...) Skwrl Productions - Wingsuit Photography Northeast Bird School - Chief Logistics Guy and Video Dork

Awwww, man, another picture is now in the lead. WTF. GET ON IT, PEOPLE!!! VOTE! (Someone get the people in Banter who never read General Skydiving Discussions to vote, will ya?) Skwrl Productions - Wingsuit Photography Northeast Bird School - Chief Logistics Guy and Video Dork -

Andreea, I'm not sure if Scotty will give you the old one, but I assure you that if you show boobies, there will be plenty of cameras that suddenly appear... Skwrl Productions - Wingsuit Photography Northeast Bird School - Chief Logistics Guy and Video Dork -

Is it just me or does the voting thingy not work yet? Also, I recognize Purple Mike and Spot... Who is the third wingsuit (sorry if I've jumped with you and didn't remember your suit...) Skwrl Productions - Wingsuit Photography Northeast Bird School - Chief Logistics Guy and Video Dork -

Justin/Spot, I propose that this thread be moved to the "Bonfire" forum since it is about skydiving and there is a metric buttload more people who read Bonfire than the "Wingsuits" forum. We could invoke the full power of dizzy.com from there... To quote my childhood hero: "Go, Scotty!" Fine, sorry, the word "ratio" was incorrect. More accurately: over identical delta s (difference between horizontal starting and ending points over a fixed time t) for both the Storm and the Sabre 2, the delta h (difference between vertical starting and ending points over the same time t) was more in the Storm than it was in the Sabre 2. Thus, expressed as a ratio of delta s over delta h, the denominater is greater in the Storm; therefore the glide ratio is smaller. Or as a human might say it, the glide of the Storm is steeper than the Sabre2 210. Skwrl Productions - Wingsuit Photography Northeast Bird School - Chief Logistics Guy and Video Dork

I've put on a bunch (about 20) more jumps onto my Storm, and I can say I'm really digging it. The glide ratio is steeper than a Sabre2 190 (I can say that because I did a little non-contact CRW with a friend and I had to adjust to match his glide). My prior canopy was a Sabre2 210. I'm starting to think the longer lines are actually a feature, not a bug - they allow for more precision when turning (i.e., it's like the difference between a dial that goes from 1 to 10 versus a dial that goes from 1 to 100 - it's not that it does the turn any differently, but rather you can say, "I want to do a 76" as opposed to a "7 or 8-ish..." It took me a few jumps to get used to the flare for landing, but I now have it worked out (I think). The openings were great (jumping it with a wingsuit exclusively) and with one exception very, very smooth (the one exception was when I asked the packer to pack it so it opens "real fast" - I was trying to see what it would do... It did.) Overall, still loving it. Skwrl Productions - Wingsuit Photography Northeast Bird School - Chief Logistics Guy and Video Dork

Fantastic work, as always, Matt. Thanks for making the trek up north, it was great to see you again. I'm looking forward to the video!

If I hadn't introduced beer to my Mac (they got into a fight and beer won), I would have posted videos. As it stands, it's going to be a few weeks before I can put footage together. I suspect Spot's endeavor is gonna be cooler than anything I could generate anyway... Skwrl Productions - Wingsuit Photography Northeast Bird School - Chief Logistics Guy and Video Dork

Awesome - you got my botched Gainer exit where I headbutted Danny's foot! (That will teach him to make sure he screws up his exit when exiting linked with me...) It must have been a long boogie. I didn't recall flying wing off of Soby (the closest I remember to that is flying on the same line as him in the 16 way) until I saw that pic... I also want to add a special thanks to Rick Hough. In addition to the loads sponsored by Tonysuits and Spot (Vasst), on the special occasion of his 1,000th skydive, Rick sponsored an entire CASA load of us winged monkeys. It's an honor to fly with a guy like Rick. Him, Him, Indeed. P.S. - Rick, why do you keep flying to the right? It's as though your center of gravity has shifted... Thomas Acquinas argued that it was when quickening occurred. But again, that presupposes a soul that there's no evidence of.
