  1. Before we were married, my husband did it for a year or so, and he hated every minute. Now he commutes 10 minutes each way, and he's much happier. If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

  3. Just to avoid confusion, "Norm" Kent is a South Florida lawyer: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norm_Kent It's something of a running joke. Norm and Norman each used to get a lot of the other's email (and may still, but I haven't seen in three years, so I can't swear to it). Echoing the OP, it is an honor to know him. He and his family are wonderful people. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  4. C[rap] Cleaner Just be sure to read the directions, but if you don't, be sure that you don't tick off any of the options under "Advanced." You should use this in addition to the privacy options afforded by your browser. There are other programs that also serve this function, and some of them are quite good, but CCleaner is probably the most thorough while still being safe for the average PC user. Edited to add: Okay, I see someone already mentioned this, so you may consider my post an endorsement of that post. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. 5. Maybe not so much psychobabble as...self-exploration. Interesting guy. I think you've posted/commented on some of his other articles in the past. This one just happens to be a crappy article. Here's another: http://www.abc.net.au/catalyst/stories/2008/03/06/2179019.htm There's more if you google his name. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. 6. Female. Does my answer ("yes") count if I've made 5 bridge jumps but no longer skydive? If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

  9. I wonder if this can be made into an avatar? Apparently yes. Look quick, it's disappearing soon. Edited to add: Well, okay, it uploaded just fine, and I could see it on the profile page, but for some reason, I'm not seeing it here. I'm going to give it time to update, and then it gets deleted anyway. Edited again to add that I'm an idiot. After uploading an avatar, you have to select the avatar. If you want to use it, Billy, I'll be taking it out of my profile as soon as you see it. Maybe sooner. No you're not. ;) If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. 11. I had an online friend who had my respect and admiration. I thought he was brilliant and wise. In real life, he turned out to be a racist, narrow-minded fuckhead. A loud one, to boot. Embarrassingly so. I have several stories like that. I also have stories of people who I thought were total assholes online who turned out to be really terrific people in person. I have several stories like that too. And there are people who have stories like that about me too. If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  12. According to the OP, he and his wife gave the dzo 30 days notice so that a smooth transition could be effected. That does not give me the impression of ill-intent on the part of the OP. It depends on the agreement. http://www.justia.com/employment/hiring-employment-contracts/ He doesn't need luck, but the thread needs a lock. 13. Many years later, the only thing I can tell you is that of all the people I've met online first, only one was the same in real life as he presented himself to be online. He's a moderator here. It's seductive. People start to think it matters, and then you get: http://img508.imageshack.us/img508/3/dutycallsqy7.png and this: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v715/rayskwire/Random/Too_Much_Computer.gif Your friends are the people you spend real time with, not the people with whom you exchange repartee on a web board. That doesn't mean that real relationships don't form as a result, but basing your opinion of someone on their words in a one-dimensional medium is absurd. Just because someone seems smart and expresses himself well doesn't mean he is a going to be a good person to have in your life; the converse is also true--one's ability to communicate with the written word is not indicative of one's character. I can't tell you how many times I've seen someone get locked into a position he didn't really hold because of the perceived need to support a friend, because he didn't like the person he was arguing with, or because he just felt like trolling a little, and it got out of hand. What does the result of that tell you about someone? That he's a total asshole? Or is it just that he's loyal to his friends, has a hot temper or likes to have a little fun pulling one over on someone else? How can you tell? 14. First, do this: HiJackThis Then go here, and paste in the logfile: http://www.hijackthis.de/#anl After you have an idea of what the actual problem is, you'll be better prepared to get rid of it. Don't make the mistake, though, of ticking off items willy-nilly. This is just to give you an idea of where the problem lies. Comprehensive antivirus tool here: http://www.raymond.cc/blog/archives/2008/01/09/scan-your-computer-with-multiple-anti-virus-for-free/ with additional instructions here: http://pcdid.com/Multi_AV.htm You can get help for the above tool in alt.privacy.spyware or alt.comp.virus. For spyware, have a look at the Spyware Warrior website: http://spywarewarrior.com/sww-help.htm There are many tools listed, and you can also post her HijackThis log in the forums and get help for the specific infestations she's picked up. After she's all cleaned up, there's a rating system on the Spyware Warrior site for various antispyware programs. 16. Okay, then here's the question: Do you have a written agreement with the dropzone, and does it contain a non-compete clause? If the answer to either question is yes, you should find an employment attorney and schedule an immediate consultation to review the contract. If the answer to either question is no, you should still see a lawyer to find out what remedies you have against someone who is trying to interfere with your livelihood. I saw that someone suggested scanning and posting the agreement (if it exists) here. Don't do that. A consultation with a real lawyer will cost you money you may not think you can afford, but...well, I recently left my job, and there were issues. I'm not a lawyer, but I'm a paralegal with nearly 25 years experience, and I know a fair bit about employment law. Nonetheless, I wasn't willing to rely on my knowledge to protect my interests, so I saw a real lawyer. Best $150 I ever spent. In the meantime, if I were you, I'd stop talking about this here. 17. I don't understand what you mean by "...not been officially served, but threatened with it...," so I'll refine my question: "Has he found some lawyer crazy enough to actually file a complaint?" If the complaint has been filed and you're just avoiding service of process, you need to see a lawyer. I've worked on three different dropzones, small, medium and large, and I've never heard of anything like this. One of the norms in skydiving has always been that when an employee (staff or contractor) and a dzo get thoroughly sick of each other, they have a huge fight, and the employee heads off to try his luck elsewhere. If this guy is just making noise, he's normal. If he actually files suit, both he and his lawyer have lost it. But even if they've lost it, if there is a complaint, you must answer it. 19. Have you been served? Or is this just one of those, "If you do _________, I'll sue you" situations? If the former (which would be bizarre, imo), see a lawyer asap. The trouble with a lawsuit is that no matter how frivolous it is, if you fail to answer, judgment will be entered against you. If the latter...well...I'd tell the dzo to go fuck himself, but that's just me. If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  20. What you wrote: ...is not factually complete. In fact, it is quite rare for a defendant in a civil action to file only an answer to the complaint. At the very least, a counterclaim is an incentive to settlement negotiations, and if settlement cannot be reached, it offers the jury additional options in deciding the case. Besides which, covering all the bases minimizes the exposure of the loser's lawyer to malpractice claims. If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  21. Not exactly factually correct. See here: http://www.law.com/jsp/article.jsp?id=1204631593901 A $12 million civil suit brought by the Empire State Building's owners is pending against Corliss for injuring a security guard and damaging the landmark's reputation and its revenue stream. Last month, Corliss filed a $30 million counterclaim, alleging unlawful imprisonment, defamation of character, emotional distress and loss of income. 23. I'd like to have seen the complaint and the theory under which it was brought, rather than a mere news synopsis. As near as I can tell--based on what was posted--it had less to do with a broken engagement, per se, than it did with the idea that she gave up a whole new life and a decent income because he said, "quit your job, come back, marry me." Had he not done that, I doubt she'd have gotten a dime. Then too, if he hadn't so disrupted her life, I got the impression she wouldn't have bothered to sue. I'll be interested to see what the appellate court has to say. If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  24. I've never tried the freebie, but Mike Truffer never makes anything a hassle if he can help it. That said, after you've received the first issue, you'll want to keep the subscription. Thanks for the reminder that I somehow allowed mine to lapse. I'll get right on that. If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
