  1. We would have done a lot cooler stuff if you had been videoing us. Without a camera, we're nothing... kevin ====================== Seasons don't fear the Reaper, nor do the Wind, the Sun, or the Rain...
  2. Lou, With the GPS V, once the sats are acquired at the windshield location, and you leave the plane with the unit on your chest, does it have any problem with your body blocking the signal ? That's what I thought a helmet-mounted antenna would be good for. But if you don'y need it, so much the better. 3. Hugs and Kisses from me to all the guys who showed up: Allen, Dave H., Ernie, Jon, Raul, and Stanley. Those guys are a bunch of washed-up old alcoholics and drug addicts. You're both lucky to still be alive ! Next time, play it safe and suck a toad. Kevin K. ====================== Seasons don't fear the Reaper, nor do the Wind, the Sun, or the Rain...
  4. Hi Boinkster, Was anyone bored enough to come out and jump with you ? kk ====================== Seasons don't fear the Reaper, nor do the Wind, the Sun, or the Rain...
  5. Here's an ancient photo of the evil twins of CRW, James Lacey and Jon Sikorsky in a Para-Commander Biplane. This was probably at Indiantown Fla. during some short period during which they were not banned from that DZ. Jumping with these two in the early 80s seemed to have two possible effects on people. Either they would be totally hooked on CRW, or they would quit jumping and take up something like basketweaving. 7. Oh yeah that sounds like a good story, but stationed there at #49 as you were I just know you were thinking "ghost pullout..." Probably keyed your mike a couple times didn't you? I'd say I thought I saw you doing a "handle check", but that would mean I was looking down, which I wasn't. IIRC, there were somewhere between 12 and 18 radios on the record dives and usually all but one receiving. I'm not sure if Jeff Cornielius (who usually called starbursts) had an operational Cypres in his rig. Bob The "Ghost Pullout" would have been a nice touch. I think I would have saved that for the last jump of the series - and landed next to my car for a quick getaway. I actually did key that radio for transmissions on the 64-way. I was assigned to make the 'complete' call to Jeff. Plus, I think I made a few after breakoff from the 70-way, of the "Woo-Hoo" variety. kevin ====================== Seasons don't fear the Reaper, nor do the Wind, the Sun, or the Rain...
  8. My rig had a CYPRES and I was wearing one of the radios. I guess that would have really disrupted things to have a reserve deploy in the middle of the 70-way. However, I tested the thing repeatedly on the ground and nothing funny happened. Kevin K. 9. Wow, that's a quick reply. I guess Airtec has full-time monitoring of this forum. They make a fine product, and it's good that a company-provided answer is readily available. However, I'm still curious as to whether there have been any accidental activations of CYPRES AADs since this fix was implemented ? kevin k ====================== Seasons don't fear the Reaper, nor do the Wind, the Sun, or the Rain...
  10. A while back, there were instances of CYPRES AAD activations occurring from local radio transmissions. The manufacturer sent out little plastic shielding sleeves and later incorporated the additional shielding into the unit at its next servicing. Does anyone know if this was a true cure for this -i.e. Have there been any unexplained activations of shielded units that may have been caused by stray RFI (Radio Frequency Interference) ? Curiously, Kevin K. ====================== Seasons don't fear the Reaper, nor do the Wind, the Sun, or the Rain...
  11. . But my worry is not the best-case scenario you list above :-) //////////////////////// Trust a CRWDog to refer to passing through 750' in a high-speed wrap as a "best case scenario". I don't mean to imply that the AAD would be a *good* thing to have at that point - as in something you would rely on to save you - but that it couldn't hurt things if it were to activate. I agree that most wraps do not meet the vertical v threshold for activation. I, too, was concerned about the external RF energy causing CYPRES activations a while back. My understanding was that the little anti-RF sleeve that the company sent out as a retrofit was stopping that energy from getting to the system. Later on a scheduled service for my CYPRES, they put a tag in with it saying that the shielding had been added internally, so the sleeve was no longer needed. I'd be interested in knowing if there have been any of those activations seen on shielded units. kevin ====================== Seasons don't fear the Reaper, nor do the Wind, the Sun, or the Rain...
  12. QuoteQuote One thing to think about is that in a wrap you want the choice of when (and sometimes if) to cut away and then fire your reserve. The choice about when to fire your reserve is taken out of your hands by a cypres which may fire your reserve into a wrap. ***************************** My thinking is that if you are passing 750' at high speed, then having a reserve out can only improve things. I don't think you should be concerned about clearing a wrap after a cutaway below that altitude, because anything but the shortest delay at that height would not allow for reserve deployment. This is certainly a personal preference issue. I recognize that there may be certain conditions in which the proper operation of the device could make the overall situation worse, or even unsurvivable. But, you have to go with what you feel is the best calculation of risk. I think that in the majority of cases, having an operating CYPRES is good. 13. Actually, there were 3 Kevins on the 70-way. If we can find another, I'd like to have an all-Kevin Rotation team at next year's Nationals. Kevin Keenan San Juan, Puerto Rico ====================== Seasons don't fear the Reaper, nor do the Wind, the Sun, or the Rain...
  14. I too was delighted when Wendy helped me become a TOADSUCKER. I had to get myself a "THEM TOADSUCKERS" t-shirt from Tristan before I left Richmond. Nina You know, it's not official until you participate in the sacred "Shirt Changing" Ceremony. This is a special rite reserved for the new female members, since they are so respected and revered. It is conducted with all ToadSuckers present, and consists of the removal of the old shirt - signifying the casting away of old ways - and donning of the new ToadSucker shirt. Usually there are beverages associated with the ceremony, and a lot of jumping up and down and throwing of undergarments by the participants is encouraged. This is really necessary to ensure a successful and happy life as a ToadSucker. It will guarantee smooth docks, no wraps, and stand-up landings. I don't make these rules, you know. These are handed down from the Great ToadSuckers of the dim past. I think Lacey the First (also known as The Great Suckwad) started many of our traditions. It's best to just obey the sacred laws. This sport is dangerous enough without messing with the holy juju. Don't say I didn't warn you... kevin k ToadSucker Spiritual Advisor ====================== Seasons don't fear the Reaper, nor do the Wind, the Sun, or the Rain...
  15. One of the best CRW photographers around is Bryan Scott. His web site has a lot of info on CRW video technique and you can probably e-mail him with specific questions. 17. I don't think it's a strict requirement for Record Attempts, but for most demos, they usually want you to land standing up. Woo Hoo ! I really crack myself up, sometimes.

  19. Very nice write-up. I seem to get out, flail around, yank on a bunch of things, and somehow land in a slot. I think I will try your much more orderly approach to things in the future. :-) I agree that the echelon management needs to be better with the mega-big-ways. We have seen collisions between jumpers maneuvering in echelon who are concentrating on the formation and run into each other. Plus, it's easy to get lost in the large numbers, especially when there is a delay in the build and people start arriving faster than they are docking. On one of the big-ways at Lk. Wales, I started an approach on a slot made up of two green PD canopies only to realize that they weren't MY two green PD canopies. I saw the error of my ways and did not dock in the wrong slot. However, better management of my echelon position would have prevented that. Blue Skies, Kevin K. ====================== Seasons don't fear the Reaper, nor do the Wind, the Sun, or the Rain...

  21. "THEM TOADSUCKERS" originally started as a CRW team at one of the ZHills boogies. I think it's been many years since there was an actual ToadSuckers team, however, the name lives on. It is basicly a loose organization (emphasis on loose) of CRW jumpers bent on having fun and spreading the gospel of CRW. I know there are others lurking out there who can give a more factual history of theis great and glorious organization. Kevin k. 22. And I'm sure they're looking forward to jumping with you. I'll try to keep better clearance from you than i had at Delmarva. See you there. kevin ====================== Seasons don't fear the Reaper, nor do the Wind, the Sun, or the Rain...
  23. That is a great series to illustrate the "textbook B-M stable Cessna exit". It's a little tricky at first getting a hold on the strut, because your reach is shortened, but you just have to lean out a little farther. Once outside, I've had no trouble getting all the way out to do a hanging exit from the strut. Be careful when climbing out to not get the small Cessna step (if you have one) stuck into the bottom of your bootie. That will surely produce a problematic exit. Now that I've done some of these, and I'm not concerned with stability, I prefer to just put both feet on the bottom edge of the door, and "bomb out". This takes a whole lot less time. You just roll out the door in a cannonball and start flying when clear of the a/c. kevin k. ====================== Seasons don't fear the Reaper, nor do the Wind, the Sun, or the Rain...
  24. And as long as that is your attitude, you will be a substandard skydiver. I don't know you, but I am simply responding to your statement. People who have never learned to pack will never have the insight into gear operation that packing jumpers do. They will always lack a certain amount of familiarity with their own equipment which may cause them trouble one day. 25. Moss Point definitely has great bathrooms. I'd say probably the best of any DZ. However, my vote for all-time best DZ is Skydive City in Zephyrhills Fla. They have great facilities, great people and an all-around good vibe. Kevin K. ====================== Seasons don't fear the Reaper, nor do the Wind, the Sun, or the Rain...
