Thats a good idea how to think of it in terms of $$- being a student I'll get myself an AAD on my rig- and stick to jumping at a familar dropzone for a while. Best Girl Scout Ever.

Students jumping in boogies
banesanura replied to banesanura's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I am going to be making a few more jumps until I complete my A- and I should be familar with the landing pattern (at Sky Dive Chicago) - I most likely will be sitting out during the boogie weekend and just learning from the more experienced divers. If anything I can always do first load with the regular jumpers at that DZ Best Girl Scout Ever. -
Students jumping in boogies
banesanura replied to banesanura's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Both- I have vacation time and friends in various states so I figured I can always check out boogies around the country. That's the one thing I was nervous about was the "wrench" (never heard of it) Which is also why I don't want to travel to another drop zone I am not familiar with- because I would accidently become that person...(not knowing the landing pattern) I just moved to Chicago so SDC is my new home. I was at The Farm in atlanta before. Plus when I jumped there often I would be out of a cesna (I would be the only one on a tuesday) so traffic wouldn't be an issue. I did my first jump at Chicago this past weekend (which is WAY bigger and more congested) I did the last load with a coach - in front of tandems- and I was on radio- so I could get used to the landing pattern. I know summer fest is going to be there...I don't know if I should jump- I am going to learn alot-and meet some other dz.commers there- but haven't decided if I am going to jump. Students jumping in boogies
banesanura replied to banesanura's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
So- there are a ton of boogies coming up. I am hesitant to jump- Obviously will DZ know that I am a student working on A license- and they will help me get on a load with a coach right before the tandems or doing a solo being last to exit the plane with a load of fun jumpers. Is it fine for me to jump from other planes other than the otter/cesna in the same order I have been jumping? When can I move on to jumping in the middle of fun jumpers? (as in how # of jumps) Best Girl Scout Ever. -
No no no- I said that I am NOT in a position to be doing any of those for a WHILE...... No worries Best Girl Scout Ever.

Thanks Andy for the advice! I will be using an AAD (as I will be renting gear at Skydive Chicago) The only thing that caught me off guard when checking out their website was "AAD's not required, but recommended" and being a newbie, I thought ALL skydivers had to have them. Silly me! Hopefully by August I will have a new rig and be able to jump with you again! I know that right now I am in no position to be pulling low- or even attempting to swoop- so I equip myself with one. Here's another question- I generally pull high (being a student) waving off at either 5 or 4.5k - what is the "general" altitude to pull? I am going to be pulling at this alt until I get about 50ish more jumps in me... Best Girl Scout Ever.
-
Malfunctions, which can create danger where there otherwise would be none. Summary: In favor of: An AAD can save your life. Against: An AAD can kill you. Which is more likely to occur? That's for you to decide. Um... are there stats on the % I've I know I've been trying to pull as much info as possible. I've been looking into buying a rig.... Best Girl Scout Ever.
-
hahahaha- not quite...maybe I should post some pics up have have you guys decide- I have to get to my lap top for those..... We should have examples of where a tandem master should have his hands....because I (as a student at the time) had no idea where they were supposed to be......... Best Girl Scout Ever.
-
I was joking about that being touched was the reason I took up skydiving. hahah I guess I will have to send pictures and have you guys decide. The only thing that was *shady as hell* was the exit- since the cam guy leaves after us you can't see the front. Instead of his hands going up and excecuting a proper arch- one goes down in front of my leg strap and the other (you really can't see) Entire free fall his arms were underneath mine and even the wave off was executed under my chest. It is unprofessional looking back at it- but after I did my tandem- I didn't know- until me and my coworkes were watching each other's videos then we notice something very odd about mine.... I never jumped there again- and I don't recommend my friends to ever jump there. I went to another drop zone to complete my AFF. Best Girl Scout Ever.
-
That's really interesting- Maybe it might be more appropriate to ask my questions to them directly. If they assume that all members still jump- then the numbers are way off. Does the DZ keep track of every jumper and # of jumps? I am sure for accounting reasons....but how can I get access to that? Is it public record? Best Girl Scout Ever.
-
Here's another spin- What about a TI who's a bit to friendly during free fall and his hands aren't where they are supposed to be? It happened to be- but I think that's why I got hooked on it....so it wasn't an issue. Some of the women were quite offended by the photos.... I mean- most people don't even have an idea of whats going on....until you pull up the video/pictures....what happens when there isn't a video and photo??? Curiousity... Best Girl Scout Ever.
-
Granted- but then people start doing something better like skydiving- Now you have to be on a waiting list for 2 years just for one lift ticket. And it costs 1299 dollars and you get stuck with smelly gassy people on the air plane. I wish I could lose these last 20 lbs. Best Girl Scout Ever.

hardy har har. Best Girl Scout Ever.

Okay that puts things into a different perspective. (I will be renting gear for a WHILE so it's no biggie) Does any one know what the % of jumpers who use AAD's and the Non users? Best Girl Scout Ever.
-
Okay- so lets money is tight- would you recommend to rent gear from the dz with cypress or just jumping your own non AAD equipped rig? How much more risk and I intaking with out one? As a student should I just rent until I get my own rig with AAD- has any one else made this choice? Best Girl Scout Ever.
-
Newbie here- No idea that an AAD isn't required I haven't heard of anyone doing this that I personally know. Why would some one NOT want to use an AAD? Am I missing something? Best Girl Scout Ever.
-
Naturally they would look into that but if a skydiver retires? Isn't aren't those stats valuable? hmmm........I need some more insight. Perhaps I will start asking around. Best Girl Scout Ever.
-
That breakdown seems better than what USPA sends out. Question: does the USPA track the skydiver's status? What do they do with their stats? I know that most of it is to require certain license's but do they track the life of jumps of a skydiver? Best Girl Scout Ever.
-
Thanks for some input- I am trying to see if I can find something so I don't have to duplicate efforts. I think some "general statistics about skydivers" would greatly benefit newbies like me...and the general population.... Best Girl Scout Ever.

I started scouring the internet for some psychology/sociology articles about skydivers. Does any one know if there is an extensive study on what exactly the demographic is? I am curious to see if there is an "average" skydiver. Just being a newbie I know that everyone has their own different story, views, and ambitions. However is there a median in this array of creative people? A few things I am most curious about the "average skydiver" NOT in any special order: How many jumps do they complete in a life time? Differences in female/male jump numbers? Race? Does the average skydiver marry within the skydiving community? Does the average skydiver do it for just recreation- or move on to become a coach- instructor- rigger? If so is it full time or part time? How did the average skydiver complete their first jump? Tandem, AFF, Static line? And here comes the psychology part of the "average skydiver" *Defense Mechanisms *what's the family life like *fears- and emotions involved *Response to a controlled stimulis *any history of illness in family...etc. Okay you get the idea. Are there any publications that answer my questions read? If not- I am sure I can shake up my sociology professor from last semester about initiating something of the sort. Best Girl Scout Ever.

Granted- but "right" is based on my perspective. So the world would function as normal, but you will become pimped out at the nearest corner of the ghetto and I will require you to have a sex change and change your name to Richard. I wish I could achieve world domination. Best Girl Scout Ever.
