  1. I was quite surprised by the skydiving scene, and pleased! When it was about to start, I'm thinking, "Oh no! Another Hollywood skydive scene." It turned out very well though, and was enjoyable. The whole movie is hilarious. There are some parts that aren't as funny as others, but the movie has so many good parts. I highly recommend it. It isn't one of those movies that have all the funny parts in the commercial. In fact, most of the parts in the commercial were some of the less funny parts, compared to the rest. 2. Usually I'll have no more than half a pint per day, but this Haagen-Daas Dolce de something Caramel ice cream was freakin awesome! Beware! If you get that flavor, you will find it's super hard to stop eating it! I have found ice cream to be more addictive than tobacco, alcohol, and cheese omlettes. So definitely watch out if you get this flavor! Who knows what could have happened if I bought a half-gallon??!! Skydiving: You either learn from other's mistakes, or they'll learn from yours.
  3. Why are you doing solos? I'm sure that people would love to jump w/ you. Sure, I'll do a jump or two w/ you, when your car gets fixed. Hehe, I've only done 1 or 2 solos since I've gotten my license. Wasn't a big fan of them when I was on student status. I try to avoid them at all possible nowadays Skydiving: You either learn from other's mistakes, or they'll learn from yours.
  4. I'd be jumping there this weekend, if only my car wasn't breaking down. Well, there's that, and I'm on duty this weekend I'll be jumping at San Diego, but once I get my car fixed up, I wouldn't mind jumping with you up at Elsinore in the future. I hate solos. 5. I'm having a tough time picturing these single point restraints. I can only imagine they're similar to the gunner's belts we wear in our helo. Skydiving: You either learn from other's mistakes, or they'll learn from yours.
  6. Very good post, and I'm glad I could read it, as a few jumps I've either been: A. Hungover B. Tired C. Feeling crappy and out of it. ...and jumped anyway. Caffeine helps to a certain level, but in regards to skydiving, why chance it? You got the whole day. Just take a nap for a couple hours. Glad you didn't end up hurting yourself. 7. As long as your log book says you've been cleared for solo status, you should be able to do solos at any dropzone you wish. Just make sure your log book is signed off, and you're card is up to date. A lot of DZs don't like it if you arrive with an out of date A license card. 8. He wasn't talking about you. HE WAS TALKING ABOUT ME!!! After I quit crying, I'm gonna blast him with a paintball gun. That wouldn't feel to good. I was more of saying the whole emo and youtube thing as a joke, but looking back on it, it doesn't come off that way very well. The emo scene at my school in 2006 was pretty bad. 9. A lot of good thought put into the responses. The reason why I asked the question in the first place, is because I know we've all had activities that have grown exponentially from the underground. The downside to having such increasing popularity, is the lack of shine the sport has when everybody starts picking it up. Take for example paintball. There's a sport that really picked up in the past 5-10 years. When I started it was still fairly small. Not too many companies out, tournaments and fields were scarce. It was fun though, to keep a small group of friends that would go out on the weekends, and play all day. Now that it's bigger, almost nobody cares if you play paintball. Annoying 12 year old kids will get up in your face for anything you do wrong on the field. Maybe I should rephrase my original question. Would you want skydiving to grow enough that all the emo kids start taking FJC? Emo Voice: "Hey...man...I can't jump with ya. I'm doing solo because I like to express myself, falling through the clouds." Next thing we know we'll have horrible youtube videos, with depressing emo/screamo bands as the soundtrack. Oh wait, we already do! Oh no! Skydiving: You either learn from other's mistakes, or they'll learn from yours.
  10. I've been doing CrossFit, and just started the zone diet a couple weeks ago. Of course I totally blew all that by eating crap, and getting trashed last night. Of well, my best standings still are: Pushups (2min): 103 Situps (2min): 85 Pullups (Max): 15 1.5mi Run: 10:29 Those are pretty crappy scores compared to my buddies. I don't really want to lose weight though. I could take off some fat, but if I'm 10-20lbs lighter, my wingloading will go down :( Skydiving: You either learn from other's mistakes, or they'll learn from yours.
  11. I don't know about some of you, but one aspect of our little activity known as skydiving that attracted me, was that it's such a small community. At least in regards to other activities. Most regular people we know won't ever put themselves in a place in which they jump out of a plane. I know there's a lot of you that feel that we need to grow the sport, and I respect that decision, but what are we really looking into by it growing? I enjoy knowing that I'm part of a fairly small community. I love being at a dropzone, and knowing the people I jump with. Sitting around in small groups at the end of the day, around the fire with a few beers. It's a great part of the sport, but I fear that the more popular skydiving gets, the more these aspects will diminish. So with that in mind, I ask you all. Would you rather have skydiving stay as a farily small community, or grow to become one of the biggest sports? Skydiving: You either learn from other's mistakes, or they'll learn from yours.
  12. Look on the bright side. At least you didn't pull a Peter Griffin, and lock yourself inside your truck with the keys outside. Skydiving: You either learn from other's mistakes, or they'll learn from yours.
  13. The problem with this logic, which I'm sick of seeing btw, is that gas prices have always been fairly high over there. I'm not sure what the rate is that your prices are increasing, but I know that the majority of your prices are due to gas tax. Here in the US, the gas tax has a very small impact on our prices. The problem that we're having, is the rate the prices are increasing. We must all agree, a lot of us shift our schedule and activities, but for most of us, we utilize a lot of our paychecks, with little extra savings. The problem is that a large chunk of our money goes towards gas, because of our daily commute. The UK's public transportation is way better than ours, in many ways. Our country lives by the automobile. We use it to go everywhere, and because of the interstate system, we can travel to virtually any place without having to resort to another means. The problem comes when gas prices increase at a very high rate, like they've been doing. Our paychecks are still the same, our minimum wage is still the same. We're taking larger and larger chunks out of other activities, some of them necessities, in order to afford our daily commutes. I almost never go out to eat anymore, because I can't afford it even a few times. Even at the store, I buy just the necessities for food, hygeine, etc. I only jump a couple times a weekend at the most, and I still am running dangerously low every paycheck. Gas prices are increasing while the economy is decreasing. Most people aren't spending money on as many extras anymore, which is in turn bringing the economy down further. It's a bad cycle. 16. :3:0 Had a few fun jumps this weekend. Although I am sooo freakin poor right now. 21st birthday last Friday too, so now I can actually buy the beer I owe. Skydiving: You either learn from other's mistakes, or they'll learn from yours.
  17. I could do it. I consider myself more than an animal, and have evolved beyond listening to just my basic biological urges. I would love to spend my life together with a special someone, than to lay over 100s of chicks in a lifetime. Skydiving: You either learn from other's mistakes, or they'll learn from yours.
  18. I definitely recommend AVG. On top of that, download SpyBot and/or AdAware to find and delete spyware. Both programs are also free, and don't clutter your computer. Skydiving: You either learn from other's mistakes, or they'll learn from yours.
  19. Funny, I used to be really bad at keeping a conversation going, but now I've somehow done a 180, and now I have trouble starting conversation in the first place. Personally, my favorite way to be approached is either somebody asking what I'm doing, or kind of going along with what I'm doing. 20. Chick Corea rocks! I remember listening to that when I was a kid. Personally, I'm not a fan of screamo/metalcore. It's just too harsh, and not that flowing. I like a lot of hard rock and metal, but screamo/metalcore I never took a likening to. I like bands like Tool, APC, Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Metallica to name a few. 21. I was planning on going up to the Excel camps, but unfortunately my car's little situation is leaving me stranded down here, until I can save up the $2500 for a car repair I've been jumping the past couple weeks at SD San Diego, because my friend is taking his AFF course, and my other friend has been going there, and hasn't been up to Elsinore yet. Pretty much I have to find a carpool in order to jump, and nobody's carpooling up to Elsinore. I should be good in a couple weeks though. 22. It's possible the electricity fried the ethernet card, or the entire slot for that matter. It doesn't hurt going out, and buying a new one. If it works, keep it. If it doesn't, return it, and we can go back to step 1. Definitely doesn't sound like a software issue though. Skydiving: You either learn from other's mistakes, or they'll learn from yours.
  23. Maybe all newly A-licensed jumpers feel this way. I only have 33 jumps, and must say, I freakin suck. I've done some simple dives, like swoop and dock, and a couple track dives, but overall my ability to stay with a group is pretty bad. Even on a track dive. For example, my friend and I did a track dive the other way. I'm still rusty at fall rate control, and so is my buddy, as he only has about 20-30 more jumps than me. We were level for awhile, and then he ended up pretty high above me. I'm better at quickening my fall rate, rather than slowing, and he has a relatively slow fall rate. Regardless to say, we never docked, and we both decided to track. He was above me, and I was below and behind him until breakoff. Part of our docking problem resulted from both of us trying to compensate for one another. Any tips for how to control fall rate while in a track, without getting ahead of the person above you? Tips on staying with the group upon exit would help as well, as I'm still not that great at presenting myself to the relative wind. Skydiving is definitely a very humbling sport, but I'm getting sick of solos, or jumps that end up as solos. What is the best way to work on my skills as I work towards my first 100 jumps? 24. I feel for you man. I bought a used Honda 2001 Civic for $9500 with only 88,000mi on it. Knowing Honda's great rep, I decided I won't need a 10,000mi extended warrenty. Now 7,000mi later, my torque converter decides to fall apart, and I'll need to replace my entire transmission soon because of that. About $2500 God...dang! Skydiving: You either learn from other's mistakes, or they'll learn from yours.
  25. Thanks for the advice everybody. As for the car repair, I pretty much know nothing about car engines. Kind of funny, because I know how to service, maintain, and preflight the main transmission for the SH-60 Seahawk helicopter that I fly in as an aircrewman.
