Blast From The Past - 1974 10 High Bunch
lodestar replied to RogerRamjet's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
Pretty cool Roger, wish we knew who exited when...kind of a fast take...but great shots showing what a mass exit looks like....great camera position...can't mistake the lodestar with that red stripe down the side.... Thanks... Tuna -
It is oddly reinforced for some reason. Got a shot of it fully inflated? Awful nice JN4 there. The jumper, speedway and aircraft don't speak 1972 to me, even though Canada was a bit behind in technology it would still seem like his gear would be more modern. I'm going to hazard a guess that it was perhaps early 60's instead.

Correct me if i'm wrong on this one but I remember flying one of those on a run from Milwaukee Mitchell field to O'hare in chicago on a twice daily utility/mail run. At the time, to get weight and balance all you had to do was pull the tail down and get the nose off the ground. If the tail stayed down, you had to move stuff forward till it came up. I think I remember that as being in the aircraft operators manual as the way to make sure you were okay on weight and balance. I do remember some issues with jumpers having to crowd forward to make it fly. Interesting stuff is it not?

Those 119's were a true workhorse, they flew many many parachute missions as well as heavy cargo work like vehicles and pallets of ammo and supplies. They were noisy but could fly like a SOB and carried a huge load.... The best version was an early design that later came to be the "Puff the magic Dragon" c-47 with guns. The AC-119G "Shadow" variant was fitted with four six-barrel 7.62 mm mini-guns, armor plating, flare-launchers, and night-capable infrared equipment AC-119K "Stinger" version, which featured the addition of two 20 mm cannon, improved avionics, and two underwing-mounted J-85-GE-17 turbojet engines, adding nearly 6,000 lbf of thrust. I'm inclined to the double lines seen on three places in the picture. Not sure why but that might be what you're talking about.

Who has jumped with a famous person?
lodestar replied to MissBuffDiver's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
Hey! I jumped with Hooper!! Well, actually he put me out on some of my first jumps, but that counts, right? He is famous, or was that infamous? -
Hoop, you rascal! I was hoping to make Howard sweat on that one, even for a second. Hey, not to change the subject, I ran across my log book the other day and noticed you had put me out on my 4th 5th and 8th jumps. That was a while ago hey?
-
Okay Howard, One back at ya, what kind of aircraft is the bottom one?
-
Shorty? You know, after his legs tangled with the prop on the chase plane.
-
How about changing his name to "Lucky"
-
Betcha didn't know Steve Sutton, in his early years, was an olympic equestrian rider, specifically jumpers, and was, I believe, on the Canadian Equestrian Team.

Put me down for one of the new ones........

Careful now Hoop, I was there, remember? (I won't tell if you don't!)Quote

Hmmmm, by that statement I surmise that even if your lips are sealed, apparently at some time your trouser zipper was not!

Ron, For sure please contact me while you're at faver dikes....it's a nice little park with access to good fishing and very rustic. You might want to check out the Princess Preserve as well, it's south of FD and has some wonderful campsites along the marsh with boat/canoe slips at the sites. And don't forget Anastasia State Park, right near town, sites are close but separated by brush, it's on the ocean with excellent boating and fishing as well, and downtown is within 5 min of town and all that tourist stuff......

Hey Grimsley, I'm hazy (wonder why that is?) on exactly where the magic forest is or was. Please shoot me the directions if you don't mind, next time I'm in tampa i'd like to have a look. Is it still in existance? My guess would be that the area has been developed and is now a housing development but you never know...... Thanks Ron, Tuna

Pat, A great read for sure....thanks for posting that!! Hoop has a point though, in 50 years most of the history of the sport will likely be preserved in the magazines that were out in those days (USPA and CANPARA) there is very little individual journalistic record of the times back then. But thanks to men like you and hoop, there are a few instances of personal history floating around out there. Carry on!!

The one and only, and don't forget the Hulk, Lou Ferrignio, or something like that! He's still kicking around believe it or not!

Howard, You are a hoot my man, "terminally curious"....lmao, Nah, just another item of curiosity for the brain to deal with in idle moments, I figured a california dz since the movie industry is out thataway. Elsinore or Perris are two that come to mind. i correct the aircraft to be a 210, i think, those were the 206's with retractable gear if memory serves correct and mine isn't often correct. If you find yourself bored shitless and no one else comes forward with an answer maybe you could email Kevin and see what he remembers.

Just cought a bit of skydiving on an episode of The incredible Hulk! The ground scenes show a big orange and white motor home with "Lynch's Freefall Freaks" on the side. Jump aircraft was a three bladed Cessna 182-85, red and white, some scenes show retracted gear others fixed. 2291R looks like the N number but is only painted on the tail so it was difficult to see. Canopies were a white square and a rainbow square but with conventional back/chest rigs on. The airport seems to have one dirt runway but other scenes show a big grass field with no runways apparent. In some of the aerial scenes it appears like a small mountain range is adjacent to the airport, being unfamiliar with the country I could not tell you where it might be but If I had to guess it would have been a california DZ. There was what appeared to be a racetrack in the vicinity (from the air) but other than that nothing apparent otherwise. Okay Howard, here's one for you!!!

Hey John, Happy birthday dude! It's been quite awhile since I've heard your name but good to know you're alive and kicking.... I remember lots of good times with you, Scratch and a few others making pencils magically appear when you wanted one..... Best wishes, Tuna

I can remember being at Zhills (69-75) and talking with a couple of guys who had been down at Steve Snyders place, in orlando i think, and had been test jumping for Snyder and his new "diaper" mod on the squares. Although I don't remember their names I do remember them showing me some incredible bruises all over their bodies from harness burns and opening shock while testing. They did have diapers on their rigs and we were much interested in how they worked. I remember they indicated that the system was pretty well tested and ready to go at that time.

Rog, I think it was the "wolverine" but may have been changed to another, the only other bar in town was "Pats Place" but it was ultra redneck and jumpers weren't recieved too well there. I remember the woman who owned the bar, she was rather obese and when she died, it turned out she had requested "Six of the biggest skydivers to carry my coffin to the grave" I was one of the six, don't remember who else was there though.... It was a crazy place, the "expired pismier" game was at it's best, I can remember seeing everyone sitting at the bar just shoving backwards and crashing to the floor when the call was made by the "ant master" and the whole room flattening out.....needless to say, other paying customers were usually absent when the troops were in town. I'm still looking for my log book to verify whether or not I made cardinal, I think I did anyway. Makes you wonder how we survived........
