While you may have seen skydivers as the stereotypical homogeneous group of people, we are in reality a very eclectic group of individuals who bring very different qualities to the sport. Part of the great community we have is the fact that these different backgrounds and lifestyles respect each other when on the DZ for what we share in the love for the sport. This respect also extends to the knowledge that some of our brother and sister divers do not share in the same entertainment as others after the jump is over. How you choose to spend your time after the planes are in the hangar (beer, pool, smokin n’ jokin, playing with explosives) is your choice. Those activities which are explicitly illegal, however, are kept on the need to know basis within that group out of respect for those of us who cannot and will not participate in them due to personal, religious, or professional beliefs and oaths. If you are looking for a group, I’m sure you’ll find it. Just don’t expect the DZ to be like a bad ‘B’ movie and please resect those around you…. Sounds like a fairly standard plea bargain. If anyone had been seriously injured of killed, then you would've seen a stronger sentence handed down. I suspect that the command wanted to send a message without raising more attention to the incident (the higher the penalty, the more press, the more visibility, the more marines/paratroopers think about what can go wrong, the worse for morale). Still think they should have referred to FM 22-102 (Wall to Wall Counseling) for action, but hey, that's just me....
