Thanks, I'm more concerned with turbulence than actually getting blown off. I have a pretty good grasp on using the winds to get where I need to go, but it can get really bumpy down low some days. I wasn't sure if some canopies were better than others in plowing through these bumps, or more forgiving when the canopy wants to surge forward or make an uncommanded turn. and after a couple gnarly landings I agree, its best to know when to call it a day and tap the keg!

Ok, so theoretically speaking.. my family lives in the middle of no where in North Carolina on a couple acres of land with a field bigger than my home DZ. A couple miles away is a small airport, mainly occupied by old geezers who like to tool around in their cessna's on the weekends. I've read the FARAIM and of course this is not legal, but really... If I talked local Joe Schmo into kicking me out of his plane and landing on my familys property what kind of issues am I facing? Who's done this? If the local police showed up can you be sighted for anything or are the police obligated to report the incident to the FAA? I'm pretty sure the pilots licence would be in jeopardy but what about the skydivers licence? Just a thought... and I wanted to see what everyone's take was on this. I'm SURE I'm not the first to dream this idea up! Nick

Just wondering what canopies tend to perform well in winds that are consistently 15-20+ kts. I jump in Hawaii and the wind conditions can become a big hazard if you're not careful here. I have around 60 jumps and have been looking for a canopy. maybe a 7 cell or 9 cell? I'm not completely sure how exactly strong winds would affect glide ratio. My understanding is that typically 7-cells have steeper descents, so would a 7-cell have less ground speed than a 9-cell in strong winds? Any reccomendations or advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Nick

The Super Raven is actually a 210. typo.. oops Also, the guy said the rig has been free fly freindly modified. Is modifying a rig to free fly freindly on par with a rig designed for free flying? Are there any special considerations? Thanks! Nick

alright, so I've been looking for a couple months for a rig that would fit me 6'3' 195lbs. and I found this. I have 50 some jumps and have been jumping a Navigator 200. Container - Vector 2 19.5in MLW DOM 95' Reserve - Super Raven 190 DOM 95' AAD - Vigil DOM 2006 for $1750 I'm planning on finding a used 190 main for this rig. Does this sound like a decent first rig? Any advice, opinions, reccomendations, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks Nick

I've been checking out some of the classifieds for used rigs and the reserve canopies seem to be usually a bit smaller than the main. I am a recent A lic. grad and feel comfortable under a 200 but probably not anything smaller yet. Should I be looking for a reserve of the same size or are the flight characteristics of a reserve different?

I just bought a new Viso digital altimeter and have a few questions about normal operation. Ok, today on my way to work I was going to drive down my long steep hill on my way to work and see how my new altimeter works. (its a good 800ft. decent to the bottom) During the drive down my altimeter would only change altitude every 5 or 6 seconds and would jump 70 or 80 feet a time, almost like it is lagging. I tried again on the way home and it did the same thing, jumping by sometimes up to a hundred feet as I drive up the hill... I also stopped halfway up to get some gas and my altimeter zero'ed itself out on its own. Is this normal? I really expected a smoother decent on the display.. instead of these big jumps and gaps in altitude and I would hate to have my altimeter zero itself on the way to altitude. Any experience and suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Nick

A Licence Grad.. advice por favor?
kalaniwavo replied to kalaniwavo's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
ok, so I just got my A licence and have around 30 jumps. my question is where do I go from here? Progressing through my A licence syllabus was pretty structured. I read my skydivers manual, practiced techniques and manuvers, etc etc.. I would like to try some new exits or manuvers in freefall or under canopy but I haven't been able to find much guidance at my dropzone except for small tidbits of info from the instructors who usually stay pretty busy. Are there any books or material relating to skydiving progression? Basically, I would like to become more knowledgeable, have more control in freefall, and a better canopy pilot. How should I get there? ANY suggestions, reccomendations, advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! Nick
