...and a fifth of poison for your rigger so you may pay him what your life is worth Seriously Natacha, you did good!! My Beer chop was jump #20. I too was not really freaked out ... until later... when I realized that my round reserve ride was ENTIRELY dependent on the spot granted to me by my JM. (BTW how WAS your spot???) You obviously have the right mindset to be a REAL skydiver if you can calmly save your life at 120 mph... and you will never again be scared of "your first reserve ride". I DO feel that your first chop is right up there with your first solo jump and your first jump ... just trust me and don't seek out your 'first horseshoe mal' ... that one IS scary though your brain will work just as well if you keep a calm head. Dave PS: Doesn't 18k rock??? Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend (Lennon/McCartney)

sa-weet photos Mr. Quade, sir. I gotta ask, though, #29 - looks sorta like Kenny Rogers with an IMAX camera strapped to his hat - who is this brave soul with the strongest neck in the world??? (see what I get for being from 'nowhere'?) I'm guessing he doesn't jump a Sabre Dave Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend (Lennon/McCartney)

need I say anything??? Sounds like a great jump ... at 61 jumps to be doing 4 way is an accomplishment - in Canada you can't even be signed off for more than 2 way till 50 jumps. I envy you ... and the fact that full face helmets are apparently NOT the fashion at your DZ I pulled off a wagonwheel with a skygodess on Saturday - we "went around" 9 times ... one on one can be fun too Dave Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend (Lennon/McCartney)

0:5:4(?) Abused the credit card again this weekend - farkin drug this adrenaline is.... First successful wagon wheel exit with a Skygoddess (5 frontloops, then we sorta stalled flipped 180 and went backwards for 4 loops before the pinggggg ... Almost illegal amounts of fun First time I've jumped camera - not like THAT, sadly - had a well secured fannypack and a 35 mm on a clear and pull X-country on the sunset load ... also the first time I've been close enough to take a photo of someone under canopy. Next stop, CReW

I bought a toothbrush, some toothpaste, a flannel for my face, Pajamas, a hairbrush, new shoes and a case I said to my reflection, Let's get out of this place. Passed the church and the steeple, the laundry on the hill, Billboards and the buildings, Memories of it still keep calling... And calling But forget it all, I know I will (an anthem for Perris?) .... Dave Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend (Lennon/McCartney)

Mr Quade, Sir: I was at that Safety Day briefing, as as guest visiting from Canada. There are a plethora of issues at Holllister that cannot be simply 'ruled away', as I understod the situation. On one of 5 jumps I made that day, we had to circle at altitude (18k!!) waiting for commercial traffic to clear the airspace - BELOW US!!. I DO recall the comment that the radar shadow of the hills extends upwards of 5,000 ft!! I'd never before considered the possibility of being belted in while I had a premature in-a/c deployment. Certainly, though, local conditions suggest a 5k seatbelt rule to be a reasonable compromise. That damn Kingair can CLIMB... HARD!! and I'd be more scared to become a projectile were I not belted in during an avoidance manouver than to be ripped in two. Door open is annother situation altogether. Please remember my experience is ONE day, albeit Safety Day (...that was "sort-of" safe) *** Likewise, weeks later I brought up the seatbelt arguement at our C-182 DZ here in Canada. It's a totally different situation here, according to not only the pilot but a senior jumper who survived a sub-1000 ft. stall/crash 20 odd years ago (with many broken bits... he was the 'lucky' one). I've read most of the online doccuments diverdriver posts about crashes, etc, and recognize the seriousness of the issue. However there is a move afoot in Canada to have the seatbelt requirement waived (as it is a throwback to "commercial" travel ... here we require an AOC just like any major airline - unlike the USA). Strange that we want to drop seatbelts as a nation and you lot want 'more' ?? Food for thought ... and may we never experience the issue firsthand. Brother in law's. The rest of the story... I came to NoCal in early March for a holiday to visit my sis and Mike. They both work stupid hours n the drug industry but one Tuesday Mike got off and we went for lunch. We stopped at Carlsen Porsche (Redwood City) because he was in a position to lease a used 911 from the tax refund they get for pating interest on a $600,000 house He fell in love with the 993 Twin turbo - a 97 .. the last of the air cooled turbos. No matter how I crunched the numbers for him (I'm a CFP) it just wasn;t gonna happen. So the following Saturday I'm given day parole with his DelSol and I drive to Hollister to have a Safety Day jumpfest. About 10:00 PM I phone and tell Mike that I'll be very late in and not to worry ... he replies "make SURE you don't hit the other car..." That was the car. Porsche WANTED him to have the car so they broke a few financing rules. He DID tell me that I could stay overnight at Hollister if I wanted but we were scheduled to tour Napa the next day. No bloody way was I going to miss my first (Bee... uh Wine!!) visit to wine country in such a car. The shot was taken in front of the Frances Ford Coppola Vinyard / Museum the next day. Dave PS: I've been racing sports cars for a dozen years or so and teach the subject (believe it or not, our track is under 'the spot' for my home DZ). That was NOT adequate preparation for ripping through the California mountains with 400 bhp underfoot. Here's some of me... Besides skydiving (can YOU propack a Manta?), I love downhill skiing (taken at Nakiska AB, site of the 1988 Olympic Winter Games), building racing cars (have welder will travel) and travelling (it MIGHT be my car... well it's in the family anyway)... Dave PS: no you do NOT get to see the pictures of me in the purple and pink nylon/spandex student jumpsuits... those I will take to my grave Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend (Lennon/McCartney)

Heya Frodo: d'ya wear contacts? I've flipped/lost contacts even WITH goggles on - never jumped without. Otherwise it's just like riding a motorcycle at 120 mph in sunglasses ... I bought something almost identical to the wrappers found HERE but with a smoke tint (actually snowboard gogglz) [edit: shit, link keeps dumping me to headgear page - go to "accessories, Goggles, item # G 1155] Until you do RW or late sunset loads it's not a big deal to have a tint or not - but when learning RW remember that your coach can NOT see your eyes and eye contact is a big thing for exit timing, etc. You may be asked to get some clear ones ... if so go for some cheapies - also good for night jumps. One other thing - consider eye "protection" not just wind protection in case of a strike - I had a bad opening and during the recoil I smacked myself in the face and STILL had a bruise around where the goggles seated - cheapies would give you no such protection. Serious (or rich) RW people go to full face helmets for 'face protection' because stuff like that can happen Dave Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend (Lennon/McCartney)

Eleven pm at a DZ on a long weekend? Naah, everyone will be sound asleep so they can be well rested for another day of jumping. Even if they were up, pizza doesn't really go with beer, does it? Dave Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend (Lennon/McCartney)

John: you're onto something here. I did my coach 1 theory course a month or 2 back and among the no-necks (sorry...) were a bunch of football coaches who INSISTED that when you tackle that the mantra is "HEADS UP" - as in head back not head forward. While we're on it, I jump a Raven II (218) as a main ... so I take a terminal reserve ride EVERY time. It's getting old despite my very best trashpack/cloverleafed oversize pocketed slider/ noserolled/ tailrolled/never-dump-in-a-track attitude to depolyment. My old shirt collars no longer fit (speaking of no-necks) so it must be good exercise ... I jump with a chiropprator and have yet to need his services . Bloody masochist I am (in the sky anyway) Dave Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend (Lennon/McCartney) -
keeping a straight face with whuffos
dterrick replied to lurch's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
ROTFLMAO !!!! Y'know, someone tried to pull the 'no breathing' part on me very early on in my skydiving career (s/l method, no CLUE about freefall). I dont try and scare the whuffos... much ... but I'm gonna remember that one Dave [edited to add:] Just thinking about it for a minute more and I guess I DO scare them... Among the things I've said include: Naah, remember when I totaled my racing car in '98? Ya every time the parachute opens it's like that, only $10,000 cheaper. Landing? Remember the last time you jumped off your garage roof? Well it's not like that ... but I practise on weekdays. Flying just like a bird? I'm still not good enough to take a shit on somene's car in midair but we have a special award given out when you succeed Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend (Lennon/McCartney) -
