  4. ...beat ya! http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=645101;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;forum_view=forum_view_collapsed;;page=unread#unread ...not like it's a contest or anything. Do you get CSPA chat Bunky? -DAve Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend (Lennon/McCartney)
  5. I dunno. I guess I'm just a 'bad' skydiver cause I haven't ever seen the movie. We do have a Curtiss C-46 Commando that's based out of CYGM and it's old and ugly enough to be a drug plane - but I'd sure rather it be used as a boogie plane... cargo doors and all -Dave Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend (Lennon/McCartney)
  6. http://www.nationalpost.com/home/story.html?id=BEF550EE-8874-4E85-A564-02697EF3B94C Ahem... these are 'trained professionals'??? This story first came to me via the CSPA chat list a few minutes ago courtesy of John. R. Smith - local skydiver... and he said ...and then he said: While I wasn't around back then, we had a similar problem at our Dropzone 20 years ago... (well, Runway 32L - the sports car one - not 32R, the skydiving one) http://airsports.fai.org/aug2000/aug200004.html see the attached picture ... that photo was NOT taken with a very long lens Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend (Lennon/McCartney)
  7. Um, wellll, it was. Then it became a death trap. Take a 42 cc 2 stroke motor, some chain and gears from your local farm implement superstore, and a welder.... A buddy of mine built one that was direct drive (output shaft rubbing on the rear wheel) but he couldn;t use it in the rain and it kept eating motors from the vibrations. Soooooo, I did some calculations (max engine RPM, desired terminal speed, etc) and built a 2 stage reduction box for it. The biotch will do 31 mph at full cry ... and is in that picture. Standard bicycle front brake was good for about one tank of gas. I don't swoop (yet), buttt.... That picture was taken about 2 weeks before my first jump. It's shot at the Gimli Motorsport Park, a 1.3 mile road racing course that uses part of the twin runway to our DZ. The beer light goes on at about 4 PM - that picture was taken about 8. I won the race, beating an electric golf cart, a gas golf cart, and a 'utility truck' with a 20 bhp motor and 3 speed box.
  8. the dolphin on the left appears to have a good tracking position... ...and for some reason I was expecting to be, um, distracted from the picture (find the boat?) Disappointed, but I'm already working at home. Does this mean I pack up and go to the DZ? -Dave Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend (Lennon/McCartney)
  9. Vibes to ya man, and not the 'Pontiac kind' Hope it returns, but if it's been crashed or abused I hope for you it doesn't. Take the money. Having been through several break-ins / no fault accidents / one stolen van ... it's never quite the same afterword. Start over? The Silver Lining? ... If it's in a container on some ship somewhere at least you can now get an STi version. That one would even come with a fresh warranty
  10. wha'chu got plugged into your home stereo? ... in your car ? Unless it's MP3 (which, likely also supports CD) you're busted on that one . If you do, you'll know I agree with you in principle (Alpine decks rock except for that stupid yellow book protocol thingy that makes me include the track number before the cut title .... rrrgh). My home CD player dies 2 years ago and has not been replaced. I bought a sony Discman at BestBuy only because it was a warranty return and mis-priced ($26, like new ...
  11. I promise we weren't ... unless you wanted us to that is... Shall we? -Dave Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend (Lennon/McCartney)
  12. You'll hear nothing worthwhile at terminal velocity, I'm afraid. I've got a Yepp and have used it, infrequently, for skydiving. Besides what others have said about the danger of being distracted, if you're doing a cross country (hop n pop from full altitude) it's a FANTASTIC experience - I did one this weekend and while the music I imagine is good, the music I could hear was even better. Using the Yepp was also a good indicator of how loud it REALLY is in a Cessna ... I set the volume on the ground and could barely hear it inflight. More experienced skydivers swear by earplugs than MP3's ... but that could also be a generational thing. Discmen are too bulky and they'd REALLY skip on deployment -Dave Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend (Lennon/McCartney)
  13. I have now... Raising an interesting point... whereas the 'traditional' network offers news as a [service] (I believe the CRTC rules still require the first 12 minutes of any news broadcast to be commercial free), CNN offers news as it's primary BUSNESS. ...a very successful business, it seems. I was unaware of the many facets of the conglomerate. What we receive in Canada appears to be the 'basic USA mainstream' version. That particular product is very biased, and I am unaware of my ability to obtain other feeds. In deference to this practise, I now recall that the BBC feed is called "BBC Canada" and is likely not the same thing as the Brits in Britain receive. Could it be that there is no such thing as unibiased reporting? Worse yet, were we to return to the USSR 'TASS' style of "Universal Reporting" we may get lots more of nothing. Hmmmm, I guss the best policy is to keep an open mind, listen to more than one information source, and actually form your own opinions (imagine that? !!) As warped as this may sound, Dropzone.com seems to be the most diverse source of 'news' thanks to you (...and others, of course). It works well as it is, but someday it would be interesting to see a dedicated Current Affairs forum... (as if I need an excuse to spend more time online ) -Dave Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend (Lennon/McCartney)
  14. CNN IS a special version of 'News'. It just happens to be a very popular one in the USA. Not to slag 'them' for creating a very successful 'business' , but the foreign content is all but nil. When it is presented, it is presented with a very American spin. Try getting a BBC world feed someday and compare the breadth and tone of the broadcast. Watching the BBC and CNN version of the 'wahteverthehell that was in Iraq' was like reading the book vs. watching the movie Anyway, the idea of scrubbing plane crashes for an airport network feed is not such a horrible version of censorship ... at least it seems altruistic... 15. Try Hollister - just East of Gilroy. http://www.skydivehollister.com/aff.html My sister lives in the Bay area and I've been down to visit twice as a skydiver - both times to H town. I HAVE visited SMB and while the facilities are VERY impressive, nothing was going on that Monday so I could not judge the vibe. Hollister is 'very' friendly to visitors and newbies. Do an advanced search for skydivers and home DZ's (main page) and you'll find H town people like Sebazz1, Titaniumlegs, lizzieB, pop, celljumper... you get the idea - lots of the DZ.com regulars are also H town regulars. The key to having fun and progressing quickly has a lot to do with how comfortable you feel with your instructor(s) .. let's face it, a plane is just a tool to get you to altitude (our only plane is a 1956 Cessna 182!!) and the club buildings are 'just' for packing, partying, and watching videos. You'll know that very soon HAVE FUN and good luck with your progression! -Dave Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend (Lennon/McCartney)
  16. Heya Steve! That's ONE possible outcome. I too have been cautioned about this exit at 160 jumps despite the fact that it was 'shown' to me by a local coach as a great 2 way exit (crotch goes into a headdown-ish dive on the slide while linked in double shoulder grips with poised). I love that exit. We have an early Cessna (narrorw fuselage, taller landing gear) and there's not a lot of room out there. Yes, you could have a reserve fire but you could also snag a flap on the strut and have a premature opening somewhere in the dive. Or, as you rotate over on exit you could catch your poptop on the door (I fly a Racer and that's my big concern). Others will likely elaborate but those are the biggies that were given to me as reasons to avoid the position. The bottom line is that if your DZ has a policy it's better to follow it than to push your luck and get grounded. At our DZ it's not prohibited but discouraged to all but the most experienced jumpers with very secure gear. -Dave Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend (Lennon/McCartney)
  17. Damn. That sooo reminds me of the chicken chorus from The Mupet Show...
  18. THIS THREAD HAS NOTHING AT ALL TO DO WITH BAD PHOTOGRAPHY. I thought I was gonna see some bad photography. Now I'm disappointed -Dave PS: No I won't chop your head off, in photographs or otherwise Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend (Lennon/McCartney)
  19. I'm one of them and, to put it mildly, it sucks at times. It's not just skydiving, but also has been sports car racing, downhill skiing, etc. In order for me to get really revved up now I need to be doing something different - and maybe for those who have anxiery, doing something familliar is the best way to alleviate the fear. My first jump was purely mind over matter ... as the Door opened for me (jumper #1 on s/l from a Cessna) it was "am I REALLY going to do this? ... YES,...I AM". Jump #2 the next weekend saw the plane ride as the major nerve-inducer (it was bumpy andthe Cessna is small). By about jump #5 it was "K, let's go this rocks". Do a really REALLY good visualization session on the BEST jump experience you've had - skydiving is soooo a mental sport - Once that memory is burned into your mind then throw in a cutaway at the end to practise your emergency manouvers (build that muscle memory). Happy returns !! -Dave Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend (Lennon/McCartney)
  20. What's a Bullock? Any relation to Sandra??? I'm jealous. My first A licensed jump was a 2 way with a level 2 coach - one of the few on DZ who pushes for an early morning load (our little Cessna rarely goes wheels up before 10 ayem it seems). Garth and I found 2 more conscious 'victims' - another experienced senior and someone more junior than me. Our pair was to be out first. We had calm air and maybe 5 mph of wind - easy to spot right? The pilot pulls a U turn RIGHT over the bowl on jumprun (1/2 mile short or so) and my Senior immediately shouts DOOOR without authorization and starts climbing out. I'm next but slow to get in position - partially hampered by the fact the plane is buffeting all over the place all of a sudden (can you say Stall, boys and girls? I knew you could). Our 2 way is a blast but at breakoff at 3500 I turn and track away from DZ. Garth, apparently, pulled in place. I landed in the middle of a wheat field a mile North of the runway's end. GArth just made it back to the edge of the airport. The second pair did not take a go-around and landed further away then me - That load won the 'Helen Keller spotting award' ... shared by Garth and out Pilot
  21. 0:3:2 Yours too? My weekend was jam packed and I only made it to DZ for 24 hours, but what a 24 hours. Arriving at half-past beer light Saturday night I dodged a SERIOUS traffic violation (involving terminal Velocity and an RCMP without a radar lock on me). First case of Beer. Did my first 'real successful' hybrid 2 way with our resident septegenarian freeflyer. Exit went funky and I went headdown
  22. On hop n pops shorts and a T shirt is my favorite. With lots of altitude and no vertical speed to speak of, the dangers are far reduced. What's been said about pockets inverting and shirts blowing up is entirely correct and predictable. I did a sit dive in bicycle shorts and a long sleeved sweatshirt (shirt tucked way down) and it STILL blew out. There was no problem except that there could have been a problem. Jumpsuits aren't just about the fashion statement ... -Dave Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend (Lennon/McCartney)
  23. Did a clear and pull from altitude with my MP3 player on a warn sunny Saturday afternoon this weekend. The tune? Far more Blue by the Dave Brubeck Quartet (60's jazz). It's a lilting piano/alto sax melody that just makes me smile when I think of the experience of flying above the lakeshore, sashaying and carving to the 5/4 rythym. Damn. I wish I didn't have RW to do this afternoon or I'd be back at DZ in an hour for a reply. Thanks for the memory
  24. Ah-HAA! The speed gene lives in you already, does it? My discipline was sports car racing (Datsun 240Z GT-2, Mazda RX-7 GT-3, Triumph GT-6 (Vintage) ). The biggest thing about full face in auto racing is the risk of fire so I wore a fullface and a 2 layer balaclava. On a Bike it was dumping it for whatever reason and 'losing face'. Same idea. In skydiving as I know it, the risks are being kicked in RW or biffing a landing. Biffed several times, never been kicked yet. No scars to show but a stalled rear riser flare (buttsmack slide) made me glad I had a good hat on. Much like dumping a mountain bike. -Dave Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend (Lennon/McCartney)
