  1. Buy a custom container and then piece together the main, reserve and aad from used sources?
  2. Thank you for the advice mccordia. I appreciate it, I plan to wait and obviously find a good ws instructor to help me along. I can definitely see how there are other aspects to ws (such as situational awareness) that only experience can provide.
  3. Currently to start wing suit jumps, jumpers should have 200 jumps in a year or more than 500, yes? Do you think if a jumper used the Intro that those numbers could/should be lowered?
  4. He's not asking what to do.. it seems obvious the only thing to do is pull red then silver.. The OP is asking.. so you have PC in tow, you cutaway, but there isn't enough drag for it to do anything, so it just stays there flapping.. he's asking what is the likelihood of the main PC getting tangled in the reserve deployment?
  5. The AFF that wants to redo the level they failed should get bumped to 16, not the other way around. At Mile-Hi I think they require tandems to show up a good amount of time in advance. Granted, Mile-Hi is a twin otter DZ so space is not as much of an issue, but typically reservations just mean, you'll get to jump in that order for AFF and tandems.. reservations don't mean certain loads.
  6. I've got a freefly pud on my Wings.. i've never had to pull it down and out or anything.. I grab it and pull without doing anything special.
  7. As a low number jumper, I obviously do not have the experience that all of you have, but I would like to make one comment on packing your own parachute. I don't think it's necessary to pack your own parachute as a new jumper, I think it's necessary to know HOW to pack a parachute as a new jumper. Maybe I have a unique case, I don't know.. but I've got a relatively new canopy that is very difficult for me to pack, so instead of wasting time packing it, I choose to pay $6 to have it packed for me when I'm trying to get a lot of jumps in. I've demonstrated to coaches, AFF-Is and myself that I can pack a parachute, I don't think that just because i'm a new jumper that I shouldn't be allowed to take advantage of the convenience service a packer provides...
  8. Dan-o taught my fjc at longmont last fall. I'll just echo everyone else's words in that I have nothing but good to say about him. It was evident from the first minutes with him that he was passionate about teaching students and ensuring their safe entry into this sport. A genuinely nice guy, you will be missed.
  9. As someone who brought a brand new canopy.. i'd strongly suggest buying used.. packing a brand new canopy sucks.
  10. Seems rather obvious that an uninsured driver doesn't have the minimum coverage the law requires.. Above poster; you got a $3000 check but only received $800. You received 26% of what you were given.. that seems highly unlikely or something is way wrong.. There's no way a city can tax you 73%..
  11. i know I've seen replacement visors for the mamba (it's the whole assembly). I could be wrong, but i think they are really cheap too.. try calling bonehead?
  12. proper pilot chute packing? I've been told it really doesn't matter, you could probably just wad it up and shove it in and it'd be fine.. of course, I've never seen someone to do that.. what exactly is "proper" for a PC?
  13. I can tell you what NOT to buy.. PQ DVD to IPod Suite.. I bought it because it seemed like it was easy to use and would convert not only DVDs but other movie files too. It does a great job with movie files such as .avi, but not so great a job with some DVDs. I wish I could get my $$ back..
  14. Interesting thread.. as a somewhat recent AFF grad from Mile-Hi with a few friends still going through it, it seems that there aren't enough AFF I's to us. Interesting to see that the two perspectives don't quite see the same situation the same. Although, I will admit, as I think about it, there are quite a lot of AFF I's at the DZ, it just always seems like my buddy will and go up there early in the morning and he can normally only get one jump in if the weather is good because there are no more instructors.. he just finished AFF3 though, so the one instructor req. should make finishing easy for him now.
  15. It's an Academy "rule", just another way to ensure we never grow up.
  16. Hmm, excellent point about the Galaxy first, that makes a lot of sense. I agree, Alti-II has a much easier face, my problem is that it's a wrist mount. Anything else I get will be on my hand which is turned toward me, as opposed to away from my face. I've also read that a lot of people use chest mounts for wingsuit and tracking dives.. so I guess I could eventually do that, which makes the point moot.
  17. I'm considering the Viso/Optima combo a little more seriously now.. one question I have which I couldn't find an answer for in the Gear Reviews.. since the Viso is so small and is digital, is it difficult to glance at the altimeter during a track, like during tracking dives? Right now I'm using an Alti-II wrist mount and it's near impossible to see without coming out of the track.. I know if I got an Alti-III or a Altitrack I wouldn't have this problem, not sure about the Viso.
  18. Oh, doh, sorry. I read VL, and thought it was FL.. assumed you were near Orlando.. my bad.
  19. I got tunnel time in between AFF 2 and 3 (3 is the first time the instructors let go of you during free fall). Up here at SVCO, they have a awesome deal where for about $180, you get 15 minutes and coaching. I never failed an AFF jump and I would attribute that in large part to the tunnel time I got. I was confident in my abilities after the "short" 15 minute session so I had no problem in the sky making turns and doing forward/back movement. It was money well spent because if I had failed a jump, I would have payed about the same amount to redo.. instead, I spent $180, "insured" I wouldn't fail a jump and learned a lot. Even if you wouldn't have problems completing AFF without tunnel time, a little bit of time will just make you that much better while you are working towards your A and beoyond.
  20. I've got a WOB buddy who uses the alti-track and I checked it out, I liked it, I just wanted more opinions on which combo to pick. He really didn't know which was better or anything and I haven't been up to the DZ much because of the crappy weather the past 3 weekends..
  21. I should've been more clear, I'm required to have an audible by the military (yes, they can even mandate this aspect of my personal life --not too big of a deal though, probably safer this way), not the DZ. I haven't really considered the Viso, mostly because I do like the analog face on my hand. Thank you for the input so far.
  22. I'm getting a little tired of borrowing massive Alti-IIs from the dropzone and would like to get my own altimeter and audible (I would've waited on the audible, but I'm req'd to have one by my school). I've come down to one of these two combos. 1.Alti-III Galaxy and Pro-Track (~$390) 2.Altitrack and Optima (~$470) Price wise, obviously option 1 is cheaper and is probably what I will go for.. I checked gear reviews, and they are all positive for items, so in hindsight, maybe I already have the answer... it's up to me to decide what I want, but comments are still always nice. I also considered 3. Alti-III and Optima ($330), but I kinda figure, I might as well have at least one of the two with a logbook as I'm guessing that will be useful to me in the future. Thanks for any advice you can provide.
  23. One question that was never answered.. what size/WL should you reserve be so you could still land relatively safely an unconscious deployment?
