  1. It would be moronic if I did since that's what I've been asking you guys to show me. I didn't make the claim.
  2. Say what you will about Brent, but he got the canuks fighting with each other - that's gotta count for something.
  3. Haven't you leaned anything yet?

I'm not sure why you are missing the point. Probably because your view of religion is favourable as long as the religion comports with your beliefs. They are all scams because they all promise things that they have no reasonable expectation of being able to deliver. Yes I believe people use tithing to scam on others. Others believe their tithes or whatever they give are used to maintain a church where they can fellowship with others and that's important to them, it's a reasonable expectation - nothing wrong with that. Personal tithing or giving doesn't even have to go to a church. And if someone is giving money just because they expect something in return, then I think they're the ones missing the point.

I agree, that's why the NT is clear that it's not a requirement. In the OT, tithes back then were just as important as taxes today.

People can have a discussion or call out inconsistencies without fighting or killing each other over it. I mean you guys can call out religious bullshit and it's ok, but when we do it it's evil incarnate? C'mon man. The Catholic church considers it the universal church - I'm just trying to work toward a more universal understanding. I’m not sure what you find particularly offensive. The “repeated sacrifice?” Many Protestants say similar things, “the body of Christ” and “the blood of Christ.” I wrote a detailed post on the differences awhile back: https://www.dropzone.com/forums/topic/249277-what-good-have-the-vatican-done-for-the-people%3F/?do=findComment&comment=3269827 I should add that I've learned that most Catholics are unaware or don't believe this particular part of Catholic doctrine anyway. Now the idea of the catholic mass is tied to the idea of indulgences, tho today they come in the form of having a mass for your dead loved one in order to get them out of purgatory. But again, most Catholics don't really believe all that and just see it as a memorial service. No problem with that. Don't find it any less offensive than the whole Prosperity theology. I agree, tho I think it's still a bit more offensive when they try to nickel and dime you even after you're dead.

And conservatives think people are easily offended these days... People eating unleavened bread, drinking wine and saying words about an imaginary being? Sigh... So you don't think it's offensive to tell people they have to give money in order for their dead loved one to get into heaven? Sigh. . .

Theology and the arguing over it is mind numbing. Every religion has branches that do it, and people sometimes fight wars over it. The stupidity of dividing the human world into camps by what their leaders tell them about magical thinking boggles the mind if you really take the time to consider it. But then again I guess we need something for our tribes to fight over. That one is just particularly offensive, along with their indulgences which in part sparked the reformation.

Anglicans are wanna be Catholics. They do "Holy Communion" which is Mass lite. Complete with wine and wafers representing the blood and body of the Holy Lamb of God. Henry the 8th did not want to stray too far it seems. Most evangelicals do something similar - they just don't believe the Catholic doctrine that effectively says they're continually sacrificing Christ over and over again for the propitiation of sin. That would run contrary to scripture that states He died once, for all.

    Q

Well you're possibly right. I know Lutherans and Anglicans call it a mass or liturgy, but I doubt the theology/doctrine behind it is similar to that of Catholics.

Phil if you're going to go on and on about evangelicals, then it might help to know about what they believe. Evangelicals are diametrically opposed to the idea of a mass.
  12. That certainly seems to be the case in today's digital/political hellscape, where we have to take the good with the bad, rather than the bad with the good.

    covid-19

I vaguely recall a story some years ago about a dude who would create artificial traffic jams with a cart full of like 50 smartphones that he'd slowly wheel along the sidewalk and mess up Google's local data. I think it was some sort of performative protest or awareness building thing about big tech? Still fascinating. Found it: https://www.wired.com/story/99-phones-fake-google-maps-traffic-jam/ Hillarious.

Hi Sky, Actually, anyone who read the link would know that. I didn't read the link, I just looked at the map and figured that's what they used. Similar to how google maps can tell you if there are any traffic jams up ahead when a bunch of cell phone location data suddenly stops on the freeway, or even when traffic builds up at long red lights. Another nifty feature is when they tell you cops were spotted up ahead. Never looked into how that all worked, but I believe other drivers report them, lol.
  15. Before I moved to California to work in film, we'd tape those offshore races in a helicopter. I suppose they could use drones now, but that's no fun - plus the producers like excuses for big budgets.
  16. I usually go to urban dictionary for this type of stuff. I'm guessing it means "Keep Believing It"
  17. So you can say shove a lightbulb up your ass, but get all bent up when I say shit sandwich. Good one Jer. . .
  18. I thought it always was a compliment. I think there was a thread awhile back where most women agreed IIRC. Your Welcome Point of no return Back handed
  19. Tropical disturbances developing off the cost of Africa every few days is typical this time of year. Most just fizzle out like a bad kava fart - fingers crossed.

    covid-19

That is terrifying for a bunch of reasons. I actually had a nightmare about it last night. I suddenly found myself at Sturgis with Jennifer Aniston in a stairwell packed with a bunch of bikers. And I said wait a minute, this can't be right, what about covid, what about social distancing, we have to get out of here - but Jennifer Aniston mocked me and insisted on staying so I just left her, and then I woke up in a cold sweat.

I keep coming back to this post and honestly I have to agree. For me, it's the matching of the blown highlights from the left collarbone to the top of the left breast, it's pretty much exactly what you'd see in real life. Nice catch. It doesn't really show on my laptop unless I tilt the screen, (otherwise the colors all just run together) but it definitely shows up on my amoled display.
  22. We are back to "Washington is offensive" How about "The Reparationists"? Thinskins

  24. You're right. I'm delusional. It's all just another crappy coincidence that liberals spun into another negative story about Trump. I'm simply asking those making the claim to show how this is beyond routine maintenance and removal/replacement of boxes destroyed by vandals and rioters. You guys are always going on about critical thinking, logic, reason and facts - but when all that's too inconvenient, you just default too your feels. Hey look, now he's burning down the post offices!
