  1. Well, it is the place for politics/guns/religion discussions on DZ.com. I mean, this is what it's FOR. You always have the option of not participating in a thread if you feel it's useless or redundant. My bad, really didn't mean to be "that guy."
  2. The other issue is evacuations and power outages, but I don't see the system changing too rapidly to outpace a solution. Overall I'm just excited for new tech. We already have people up here in northern mi powering small cabins with a couple 'portable' solar kits. There's also plenty of hydro up here. I have my eye a lightly forested area right on a river bank near a small dam that could potentially be retrofitted or perhaps used for micro-hydro system. I guess what I'm saying is that maybe it's time to start growing a beard.
  3. It's not a science book, if it was, the 2-3 page creation story would've been 1000s of pages of biology notes and physics equations - everything a Jewish sheep herder wants for Christmas. Most of it would've been burned by 70 A.D anyway and lost forever, that is if they didn't already use it as heavenly fodder to keep warm in the wilderness. (sorry, I just don't know what to say anymore. we've all been here 15-20 years and have discussed this ad nauseam. Is there like a schedule of repeat performances for some audience I don't know about?)
  4. Those lessons become moot. It becomes the incumbent duty of every good citizen to come to the defense of their countries righteous ideals.Which is not to say that courteous debate, debate with respect. Should not be the first option. But when debate is a sham exercise. When lies, obfuscation and obstruction the new norm. The dutiful and brave must stand, must act. I guess I better keep my mouth shut. . .

Before the web, that place was located in the supermarket checkout line. . .
  6. It's a lot easier to change religions than your skin colour though... I don't think that's what he's talking about, but to your point, I suppose you could look at religion on a spectrum similar to gender and how it's exhibited over time in a variety of ways, and how social/political constructs/ideologies may affect that development.
  7. Sounds about right. It's unlikely that we'd ever see anything like the reformation again, and any protestant divisions since then have mostly been based on minor doctrinal issues rather than social issues or outright 'heresy.' But NBC's Meet the Press did a piece on what I'd call the "spectrum of evangelicals" where they focused on the two ends of that spectrum. The evangelical on the more 'passive' end made the point that the easy thing to do is just say that he's not an evangelical anymore, but he doesn't, which sort of speaks to your point. https://www.nbcnews.com/meet-the-press/video/evangelicals-the-bible-belt-is-unbuckling-123781701521 I guess another way to give this a little more perspective is to use Phil's post about how 40% of republicans said that the violence on Jan 6 was acceptable. Even if that's true in the most extreme sense of the word "violence," how many of that 40% is evangelical, and then how many of those are on the far right of the evangelical spectrum depicted in the NBC feature linked above. . .and then how many of those actually want violence?
  8. Respect is a two way street. And in this thread, you're the roadblock.
  9. The first one I remember was in Ferris Bueller, tho it didn't really add to the story. Yep, that's when I scrubbed through and saw the extra scenes. I also figured they'd eventually explain what a bronteroc was, but I totally forgot about it by the end of the movie.
  10. I agree, but sometimes you and I get carried away. And I can get carried away pushing back, but honestly, to me it's not the one liners/insults that are so annoying. I mean they can be, but many times there is value in the humor and we don't want to censor that. Also, it's been shown that sarcasm spurs creativity in both the giver and receiver. Me too, many of us here voiced concerns at one point or another, but there is a time and a place - and that time and place isn't in a thread when we're trying to have a discussion about interpreting climate data. But like you said we tend to get carried away sometimes.
  11. But again, the Jews were already familiar with the 3 distinct concepts of God's Word, Spirit and Wisdom from the OT which was reflected in the first uses/definitions of the word Trinity. If polytheists took that as 3 different gods then that's on them, right? I never heard/read it being taught/ explained that way, and to do so would've been viewed as heresy. But like you said this is already around 200 AD and it just gets more complicated from there. Ya, and by the Council of Trent they turned Jesus into a waffer/cup of wine and condemned anyone that didn't take it literally.
  12. That's why I said Wokeness vs Wokeism. Yep. Every movement has its extremists. Right, the article is more balanced than the quotes suggest. And it's not just about the extremists, but society in general.
  13. Wokeness vs Wokeism https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/feeling-our-way/202108/the-psychology-wokeism "every movement is susceptible to becoming the thing it despises. Nietzsche said it best, perhaps: “Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster.” "On the political left, wokeness sometimes drifts into wokeism—a system of thought and behavior characterized by intolerance, policing the speech of others, and proving one’s own superiority by denouncing others. It’s not hard to see how wokeism benefits the intolerant" “The surest way to work up a crusade in favor of some good cause is to promise people they will have a chance of maltreating someone. To be able to destroy with good conscience, to be able to behave badly and call your bad behavior ‘righteous indignation’—this is the height of psychological luxury, the most delicious of moral treats.”
  14. "Wokeism" is nothing but a right wing boogeyman. It is a meaningless FOX news trope. Ok, then it shouldn't be so hard.
  15. Throw in wokeism and maybe we can start talking. Any other concessions?
  16. I agree it did not have to be. But again, it was - in part because they needed to get pantheists interested in their new (and struggling) religion. There's a rich history, can you provide a bit more context and/or references? I'm having trouble finding where the concept of the trinity was taught as 3 different Gods and how that would relate to pantheism. Did you mean polytheism? And again, the concept of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit existed well before actually calling it the Trinity, and doing so wasn't very popular in the beginning, or so I read.
  17. I didn't say you did. I said you would like everyone to stop picking on your poor suppressed co-religionists. Ron is the one who seems to be pining for a theocracy. We've talked about this before, how you keep saying "seems to be this and seems to be that or I'm not really sure," but he's already explained to you repeatedly what his idea of a theocracy means and it had nothing to do with contemporary politics and shoving whatever down your throat.
  18. Nah, just like fundamentalists don't really hate America. You were talking about the same silly presumptions about us setting up a theocracy and Zombies? I mean really, what do you want me to say to that, lol? It wasn't until Bill replied that there was any thing of substance in that thread to respond to. If I really wanted to overthrow the constitution and set up a theocracy like you said, why would I be offended?
  19. But even the OT references ideas like the Spirit of God, God's begotten son, His equality with God and what would happen to Him. So it's just a matter of how to conceptualize it all - it's not like it had to be specially tailored for pantheists.

  21. Ya right, Bill is just using this thread to alienate red states on the gulf coast and central time zone!
  22. It stalled, spun down the rabbit hole and a bunch of otherwise smarter people went down the hole to find it.
  23. You guys CAN be our multicultural liberal cities! We'll just ship those ones north. And then we can ship the rest to our bleeding heart liberal cities in Mexico to help make all our new fellow citizens feel welcome once we take that shithole over. Edit: I almost forgot to laugh.
