Maybe this was talked about somewhere else, but could you explain why the requirement for the high performance landing. I fail to see how having this skill if no desire ever to swoop is beneficial. I can't think of a scenario in which it would help for safety reasons.

Very sad story you mentioned. Although I agree with your above statement, I also extend that to everybody, not just cops. I believe ANYBODY who chooses to possess firearms should know better.
-
I'm probably going to be in the minority saying this but, the guy being a cop shouldn't even be an issue. Why did the media report that? To sensationalize the story? If the guy was a janitor or a doctor, I doubt they would have mentioned his career. The guy should not be held to a higher standard just because he is cop. ALL gun owners should be held to the highest level. Not especially cops, everyone.

Interesting question. I write with my left hand but am right hand dominant in everything else. I've always wondered how much of that is attributed to growing up in a right hand dominant society. (ie. learning how to use scissors in kindergarten, throwing a ball, pulling the pc, ect) Any other leftys have an opinion?

Thanks skymama! I'm definitely looking into one of those collars. I had never heard of them before. Thanks everybody else for the advice. To reply to a few people: the cats will not be out of their carriers when the truck is in motion.
-
I have a better idea. Why don't you fly up here and and drive down with me so they can drive you crazy too. You got nothing else to do!
-
Good god! Maybe I better rethink that sedative idea! Thanks for all the other advice. Hopefully, I'll come up with a plan.

Anybody have any experience traveling long distance with 2 cats? I'm moving across the county in a couple of weeks and know my cats are going to freak out. I read an older thread about moving cats but it didn't specify the logistics. I estimate the trip will take about 2 days. How do I let them out of their carriers to go to the bathroom? There won't be room in the cab of the u-haul, but I'm terrified of letting them loose in the back of the truck. They will freak, run and hide. I'm making this trip by myself so I won't have help in containing them. I don't want to give them sedatives. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks.

Canopy Collision video (thankfully non fatal)
rnicks replied to Fallcoholic's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
That's awesome that you were able to jump it!! Eventhough I have had an unintentional cutaway, I would still love the opportunity to jump a tertiary rig. -
Canopy Collision video (thankfully non fatal)
rnicks replied to Fallcoholic's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I think this is a good idea and have always wished cutaway rigs were more available. However, the USPA disagrees stating that you must have a minimuim of a C license to do this (Section 2 J-c) which is quite ridiculous. I hear over and over on these forums about how you should have confidence in your rigger. For many, it's not about not trusting your rigger, it's apprehension about something you've never done before. -
In what situations can you fall out of the harness?
rnicks replied to ShcShc11's topic in Safety and Training
Just curious to know why this is too snug? I wear mine this snug and probably even tighter than what you have described. I don't feel it hinders my arch at all. I arch with my hips, not my chest. I routinely jump with people over twice my size and have no problems staying down. Completely agree with you on this. However my point in replying to the OP was that I did let this become an unnecessary fear. Trying to advise her not to let it become a problem because it is a hard fear to break. -
In what situations can you fall out of the harness?
rnicks replied to ShcShc11's topic in Safety and Training
I had the exact same fear as a student and 600 jumps later that fear has not let up even a little. I have custom fitting gear however I sinch down all my straps to the point of inpeding blood flow! I am routinely told that my chest strap is too tight but I don't feel it interferes with my flying at all. (I open it all the way under canopy). I check my straps literally about 20 times. Hopefully your fear does not get out of control like mine has. It's really annoying but it seems I can't stop the behavior. Right now as a student is the time to develop a routine of 3 checks and don't let the fear become an obsession. -

B-License Canopy Control Proficency Card

You do know where I live right? Where we have about 2 jumpable months of the year? I haven't been to the dropzone in almost 5 months! I'll figure it out though. -
B-License Canopy Control Proficency Card
rnicks replied to theonlyski's topic in Safety and Training
Oh come on! You know me. Do you think I actually read my emails? Now that I am aware it is a requirement I will send it in. However the only reason I was even aware was because I vaguely remembered this thread. Many people don't read this (or their emails) I would think that it would be included on the application. Otherwise, how is one to know?? -

Well I know that much. My question was about the requirement itself. It's not listed as a requirement on the application. -
B-License Canopy Control Proficency Card
rnicks replied to theonlyski's topic in Safety and Training
Sorry for the resurrection of an old thread. I didn't pay attention the first time around because I never planned on getting anything other than an A. Turns out, I need a C stat! I downloaded the application license just today and nowhere does it talk about the proficiency card or requirements. (I have the card from a link that ski provided) Has the site been updated? Has this gone into effect? Do I need to send it in? Lastly, I vaguely recall questions if an S&TA really had to sign off on it or not. Is this the case? The card clearly states that they do, so I'm guessing so. -
Things you don't need to do/try since you're a skydiver
rnicks replied to cocheese's topic in The Bonfire
I always find it weird when people say since jumping they find roller coasters boring. I think coasters are WAY more intense than skydiving. They provide much more of an adrenaline rush and are awesome; especially the new ones. They're freakin terrifying. I LOVE coasters way more than skydiving! -
I just recently read through this thread and discovered your cartoons. They are FABULOUS!! You have great talent! Don't worry, you will get over your fear! I can almost guarantee without ever having met you that I was a more nervous student. I was scared shitless until about jump 300 and now at 600 am only slightly less scared! I'm hoping one day to get over it. Keep with it!

what is the best gear for a beginner to the sport?
rnicks replied to jerrid_atwood's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Gee, I thought my post was pretty constructive. But you're right, I shouldn't post when I'm tired. -

rnicks replied to jerrid_atwood's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
That joke is more tiresome than new kids asking about gear. With a D license and 9 years in, you are a leader in this sport whether you are an active coach/instructor or not. If you have nothing constructive to add, then zip it up!! -
I'm relatively new to WSing, having started in April. I love my P2 when jumping with other people, however, when at home, I do only solos as there are no other WSers. It would be nice to wear a different suit every now and then for a little more time on these solos. (The P2 would still be my main suit) On the PF website under the description of the G3, at the top, it describes it as an advanced ws, (I only have 170 ws jumps, not looking for an advanced suit) but then at the bottom it states it is aimed towards intermediate flyers. ??? Anybody care to comment? The pics also make it look huge. But then again so does the pic of the P2. My phantom is tiny. My leg wing is at least half the size of the one pictured. The shadow description seems to be equivalent to the P2, so I'm not sure that's what I'm looking for. I don't know much about Tony suits except that they are huge! The intro's I've seen have all been bigger than my P2. I'm assuming I would be looking at a T?? Before ya all start flaming me, I'm only looking for a bigger suit to wear occasionally when there is nobody else to fly with. My P2 is more than enough for flocking. I actually have to work hard to stay down with people. Thanks for any insight.

There's a difference between having a D-license and meeting the requirements for one. I've done some "C-license" stuff with just an "A", but I meet most of the Req's for the B and C, so various people ok'd it. Almost true. I've done multiple beach jumps with only an A license. But I was C qualified at the time. I will never be D qualified. (I won't rant as to why. That has been beaten to death here) On a separate note, when I was downsizing both times below a 150, I followed Billvon's checklist and was in accordance with Brian Germain's chart. Funny how that goes against what the SIM recommends.
-
Thanks! Then I was certainly a rule breaker. I have well over 500 jumps now but seeing as I will never get a D license, I suppose I will always be a rule breaker.
-
Can you (or anybody) provide a link to this? The closest thing I can find is in 6-10 B3d http://www.uspa.org/SIM/Read/Section6/tabid/169/Default.aspx#1072 which doesn't say 500 jumps. Of course anything under a 150 is considered high performance though 500 jumps seems awful conservative. However, the above link does state that anything under a 150 is considered advanced. At just under 600 jumps I definitely am NOT considered advanced, however I did just downsize to a canopy smaller than 150 to a wl of 1.1. I do realize that wingloading on smaller canopies does not equate to the same on larger canopies. I just did not think of my transition as being too aggressive. edit: spelling
