After rereading my posts, I want to clarify something here. Please do not think I am questioning your methods of parenting or abilities as a parent, because I am not in the slightest bit. I think that just caring enough to say something and show you care what your family is exposed to says a lot. All I'm trying to say is that there are good ways to bring your children to the dz without putting them into the middle of a cuss fest or wet t-shirt contest. Take note I am not a parent, and I'm sure it's more more complicated than this, but I would think it much better to act by educating your children about certain words they might hear and that these words are not to be used and why, rather than just complain that they are being used by others. I understand where you're coming from, I really do, but see it from the average skydiver's point of view..... There are naked jumps sometimes at dz's and boogies......do you complain about seeing nudity or make the right choice and not put them in that environment in the first place? Do you take your kids to Hooters and complain too? 9 dropzones out of 10 are not places for children if you don't want them hearing the words fuck, shit, or chickenfucker. Skydiving is (mostly) for people 18 and over. Those who jump younger are generally teenagers when they start jumping, and already know enough to know that the dz is pretty much the equivalent of a bar, and they know what to expect. Don't get me wrong, I love kids, and when there are kids at the dz you'll generally see me playing catch with them or frisbee or something of that nature between loads. But still, it's not a good environment for them, and in some cases, it can be a danger to us (ie. if someone's kid runs out into the landing area). If you bring your kid to the DZ, do not expect a daycare center. Do not expect everyone to tone down their behavior just because you chose to introduce them to that environment. I'll watch my mouth around them, but not everyone will. It's very noble to speak out and say that you don't agree with a term someone is using to describe a boogie and give reasons why. But if you don't like it, don't take your family, it's as simple as that. If you bring your kids along and they go home that night with a new vocabulary, it's not our fault for being dirty talking skydivers, it's your fault for being dumb enough to bring them there. SHARE YOUR BAND GEEK STORIES!! So as some of you know, I was a band geek in high school, and we used to pull nice little pranks every now and again on other teams or members of our beloved faculty. To give some examples..... When our new Asst. Band Director moved into his new house, one night we wrapped 30 rolls (no I'm not exaggerating, we actually bought 30 rolls) of Caution tape and ran around his house with them until they wrapped around his whole house (including the doors so he had some trouble getting out....we got his car too lol), then taped up Quarantine signs all over his doors. Moving road blocks from random places in town and putting them on the main strip in front of the high school was an almost everyday activity, along with picking up cars and turning them sideways in their spots. There was a kid who was known for being a flat out asshole just cuz he liked being in control. He had a habit of starting shit with a certain Senior in my section. One day he was running his mouth as usual when a girl tried to break it up....this dumbass makes the mistake of threatening to beat the shit out of this girl in front my us and the rest of the band. Being in my section, himself being a Freshman, myself being a Senior, we decided it was time to take action.....after all, he was our responsibility. Sooooo......I just happened to own a Jeep Wrangler, and another guy just happened to have some of that nylon rope thats all pokey and stuff.......so long story short, "Scared Straight" didn't have shit on us. We tied him by his hands and ankles to the back of my Jeep by the roll bars (tightly so he was only making contact with the roll bars, he wasn't dragging the ground or even off the tailgate so don't go ), and we took him for a little joyride down the highway. Sure he took it a little hard, but he never threatened another person with violence again, and later that year he actually thanked us for it cuz apparently people started thinking better of him once he stopped being a dick. I was never so happy to provide a service. We formed an official Percussion Cult (after remarks made by the principal that our percussion section was more of a cult than a group of students). We had our own logo, tshirts, a laminated cult schedule displayed proudly above our section with events such involving blood drinking and animal sacrifice, and somewhere hidden deep in a box I'm sure I still have my membership card. Our rival team were the Wellston Rockets....the night before the big game, a large group of us went to their field with some kerosene and spelled out WELLSTON SUCKITS covering their field......you can only imagine what happened next, and the arrests involved afterwards (I was one of the lucky few who didn't go home in the back of a police car), and even better were the expressions on the faces of their players the next night when they saw it. This one time....at band camp......there was a kid who was asleep in this tent he had set up....it was old school, the tall ones that the boy scouts use. So we go in there and do the old shaving cream thing and cover him in it, had a few laughs......until something unexpected happened. One of the guys was smoking, and amidst all the laughter dropped the cigarette out of his mouth and onto the kid.....guess what, shaving cream contains alcohol.....alcohol is flamable. So here we are, 3 guys jumping on this kid to put out the Freshman BBQ, and he wakes up saying "What the hell just happened.....what's that smell?". We all busted out laughing, walked out, and never told him why he was covered in a strange substance that smelled like something had been cooked in it. SO ANYWAY, my reason for posting this?? I just happen to drive by the practice field last night, and the principal lives across the street from it. In his yard are what must be over a hundred pink flamingos. They were everywhere, of course covering his yard, several on his porch, even about 6 on his roof. The best part is the sign they put in the middle of it.... "You have been FLOCKED. Signed, the JHS Percussion Section" I don't remember the last time I laughed like that....and I'm very proud that they carried on the Traditions of Mischief.
