  1. I may be slightly off, but I'm talking about distance to a fully inflated canopy (ready to fly) from the time I threw out. The time was definitely longer and distance further for a full inflation on the hop n pop. If you're not having fun, what's the point
  2. I just purchased a Hornet 190. I jumped it 3 times (4000,7500,9500). On the terminal velocity dives, it took about 800' and around 1000' on the subterminal hop 'n pop. The openings are soft and pleasant. My question is if there is a problem with slow openings. On the higher jumps, I'm fine and appreciate the slow and comfortable inflation. On the hop 'n pop, I started getting nervous when it was taking so long knowing I was already low enough to pull when I left the plane. At what point should I consider changing the packing style to speed up the opening? I don't want to lose the soft opening, but I also want enough altitude to make a decision if I have to cut away. If you're not having fun, what's the point
  3. Thanks for the info. I've been using one in the student gear prior to buying my own rig, but didn't know any of the details about maintenance. I know it will come with a manual, but like all new toys, it's hard to stay patient. Thanks again. If you're not having fun, what's the point
  4. What, you didn't like the somersault. I meant to do that...really. I was working on style points. :) If you're not having fun, what's the point
  5. I just ordered my Cypress this weekend, so I have another week before I get it and have it installed. Just out of curiosity, what type of maintenance is suggested on it, and how often. Thanks. If you're not having fun, what's the point
  6. This is the biggest problem I seem to be having trouble with. It's easy to concentrate on body position when you are in the plane and preparing for exit. Once you are falling, you are thinking about the dive, watching for other people, checking the ground, looking for others......basically everything except concentrating on body position. At least that's the way it's going for me. I am plenty relaxed. I simply tend to leave my feet up too high and not even realize I'm doing it. I imagine a few videos and drill dives would fix the problem. If you're not having fun, what's the point
  7. I posted a note with a photo and later decided to change the photo I used, but couldn't. Apparantly, you can only change the message. Either I am missing something, or there should be a way to change, delete photo attachments. If you're not having fun, what's the point
  8. When the weather gets cold, do what the animals do...or is that become one of the animals. In any event, this photo shows just how far people will go to stay warm. Always a good time. If you're not having fun, what's the point
  9. Running from the fear is definitely not the solution. You can't let it tell you what to do. A little fear is what keeps us alert. You need to be a little afraid so that you respect the sport. I would take a few observer rides on some jump runs and just go to the door and look out. It's a good way to work into it again. To experience flight, you need to be in the air, not in the plane. Jump and be free.
  10. Well, the year is new and I finally have my own canopy. I received my Hornet 190 and managed to make 3 jumps on it Saturday (4000, 7500, 9500). After all the horror stories I'd hear, I was pleasantly surprised. It was the sweetest opening all 3 times. It took about 800' to slowly inflate and put me comfortably under a canopy, 1000' for the subterminal hop 'n pop. I'm looking forward to many more jumps with the rig and some good times with all of the great people at Archway.
  11. you've got at least 45-60 seconds in freefall for taking care of other business. Then, you can take care of both.
  12. If all else fails, you can check it in with regular luggage. It's not worth staying home just because you can't carry your rig onboard.
  13. definitely words to live by. I have become much happier after taking life much easier. Skydiving is one of those moments that let you enjoy life for the moment. Why put off till tomorrow what you can do today.
  14. My new Hornet 190 came with a manual. According to it, PISA says to PRO pack. As far as the nose goes, it says to stuff the center cell and roll the other halves inward toward each other. And yes, the slider is supposed to be that big!
  15. It tried to open, but timed out. I didn't get anything. You might just be getting it to open from the cache. Try to clear your history and cache and see if it still opens.
  16. I did s/l. I thinks it's easier to gain altitude than lose it. Hop N Pops would be nice if the clouds were above 2K, temp>35, wind
  17. I don't have any experience with the pro, but I have a new Hornet 190. I haven't had a chance to jump it yet due to the weather, but I'll be posting as soon as I get a general impression from it. I plan on packing a few different ways to get the best openings. Does anyone have any experience with Hornet 190 packing that works best... -pro vs psycho -folding/not folding the nose ...etc Thanks
  18. the idea of a dive just to practice mals is pretty interesting. I've never thought of that one before. Definitely a great idea for those that haven't ever, or in a long time, had a problem. Also, I think an intentional cutaway with experience people would be a great experience just to remind us of why we do so many safety checks and should take our time packing. It's not about quantity, but quality.
  19. to save more money so I can spend it at the dz
  20. congrats. I was looking forward to jumping today since the weather was so good the last couple days. Maybe next weekend will be better.
  21. being social only counts while your clothes are on (just kidding).
  22. Here's a good one: So, do you guys talk to each other in the air? Sure, they just have no clue what the hell I'm saying. You try talking to someone in 120mph winds during the next hurricane
  23. The best of all time still has to be: The Sixth Sense. Keith
  24. very nice photos. I'd rather see it from under canopy at 2000' though.
  25. How do you know how tight to roll the tail? I can never tell when to stop cause the control lines are hidden so you don't know if they are migrating to the front or not. Also, I heard the psycho pack was supposed to be better for softer openings. Anyone else have any experience with it. I want to try it, but would rather see someone else do it first.
