They're not trying to kill us. They're trying to kill the new VLJ air taxi services. We're just going to be collateral damage.

Don't get the core: without a hard drive he's extremely limited in what he can do. Releasing a harddriveless version was stupid on microsoft's part. Game patches, demos, map packs, that sort of thing all require the hard drive. There's not much point in getting the Elite anymore. Initially it was the only version with HDMI, but recently the premium system has also started sporting HDMI. If you wanted to hold off a couple months, they should be making the transistion to a cooler running revision. No one is quite sure when, though.

Making an NiMH battery charger - need help from electronics gurus
-Scatter- replied to Loonix's topic in The Bonfire
The simplest trickle charger will be a voltage source and a power resistor. I agree C/20 end of charge is better than C/10. For a nominal 3.6v pack, that'll be an end of charge voltage of about 4.5v. You need to have C/20 current going into the pack at 4.5v. For total pack capacity of 2000mAh you'll want a charge current of 100mA. That gives you one equation: (Vin-4.5V)/R = 100mA Now, for a "fully discharged" battery, say 2.4v, we need to set a charge current. Say we'd like to charge at C/10 when we're fully discharged. That gives us (Vin-2.4V)/R = 200mA Solving both equations simultaneously will give the desired open circuit voltage for the charger and the correct resistance. In this case, Vin = 6.6v and R = 21 ohms. To be safe the resistor needs to be sized to not overheat at max power dissipation, which would be a short instead of a battery. 6.6^2/21 = 2.07 watts, so a 5 watt resistor would do the trick. 21 ohms isn't a standard value, but a 5 watt, 22 ohm would be just about perfect. Alternatively, if you have some particular power supply or wall wart you want to use, you can use the same procedure: set the final charge current and the open circuit voltage, and then calculate the resistance and initial charge current, Just remember to take the resistance of the secondary into account if you're using a wall wart. -

Obviously what happened was the guy in the extreme bottom left. Shaved, "respectable" haircut, muscled, clean shirt and looks employed. When people started letting that sort of degenerate in, what did they expect to happen?

I always liked Falling is Like This by Ani Difranco The refrain goes: Its like you're trying to fight gravity On a planet that insists That love is like falling and Falling is like this Certainly better than your typical couple overused ones. How many times can you possibly hear Jump?

I'm not afraid of dying. I'm afraid of dying poorly. I'm always extra-vigilant driving home from the DZ, because I don't want my headline to be "Man killed in tragic car accident minutes after cheating death." As long as I go pushing the state of the art, no worries. Cancer would bother me, because who would benefit from that?

Tell her what? "I'm madly in love with you. Can we get straight to the having babies and moving to the suburbs part?" If you have to ask on the internet you're planning on WAYYYYYYYY overdoing it. Leave her a graceful out, and what's the problem?

Unfortunately if I grow facial hair I look like a serial killer. Which isn't necessarily masculine - "it puts the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again" etc. Nothing wrong with being a douche. It means its not really a good idea for women to put you in their vagina, but it makes them feel better. That's usually pretty accurate, no?
-
Okay, then, help me out here. What's a more "masculine and up to date" style one can do with hair a foot and a half long. It kinda grows out of my head this color, texture and straightness, and I'm not willing to cut it off just yet.

QuoteNo offense. I glanced at the pic, and my initial impression was: girly man sleeps in his van drummer for a 80s rock band Quote Hrm. Not electrical engineer small business owner, french hornist, drives a very boring Toyota Camry, non-drinker-non-smoker? Hmm

Where mah bitches at?
-
nah, I think that's just me. No sense blaming the hair for that.

But see, that's a trick of the camera. My head is actually tilted to the left in the picture. My left your right sort of thing.

Being recently single (and therefore recently having to care) I'm finding that the overwhelming number of women consider long hair a turn-off. Even skydiving women (who I'd expect to be more adventurous) judging from the "hair" poll. At best its a fetish - the male equivalent of being a BBW? Can anyone clue me in as to why? Is it just nasty long hair, or is it all long hair? Did everyone get tired of getting mouthfuls of hair during sex? Is it the "long hair = unemployed junkie" stereotype? I'm not cutting mine (photo for reference), but can someone explain?

You know that when we send it back, we're reduced to jumping a "dad blamed" cessna for the other 11 months? You'll live one more weekend. Signed - Canton Air Sports jumpers

Two points: Point one, if I hadn't prepaid, I probably wouldn't have stuck with it. Its one thing talking yourself into wasting $2k once. Its another thing talking yourself into wasting $2-300 every weekend. At least for me. Drop the money, and then have fun, instead of having it hang over you every time you consider driving to the drop zone. Point two is if you want to be independently wealthy and didn't start that way, you don't get to enjoy every minute of your life. Them's the breaks. Sorry.

I love the Internet! Its not every day I get mistaken for an attractive female! I think it had more to do with us usually being a C-182 drop zone, and it being the first day a King Air was there, myself. That and just a great bunch of people. -
Almost old enough to jump - AFF is 1595, good price?
-Scatter- replied to Philly215's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I did mine for about $1100 to get through AFF, and a total of $1900 for the 25 needed to get my A. A big question, though, is what does your price include, and from what altitude? Mine was a C-182 from 10,000 feet, no video. I managed to make it through without having to repeat, but some of the jumps I had to be MOVING. Having since jumped from up to 14,500, I think it would have been worth a little extra money to have so much more time to get through the freefall learning objectives. If its like what I did, cessna, 10k, no video, then it might be a little high. If that's from an otter at 14k with a cameraman jumping with you on every jump in addition to your instructors, that's a fantastic price. In between, who knows? -

If it makes you feel any better, I've done 17 now too and I'm also kinda avoiding my HnP. So at the very least, you're not alone. I got where you are right after AFF, before jump 9. I think it comes as you move past the "no one gets pregnant their first time" mentality. I walked in the door anyway, and got roped into a 9-way pin dive for jump 9. That was all I needed. -
See, I don't have to worry about my clothing stinking up my pack, because I don't carry any clothing at all that isn't part of my layering system. No changes of anything. Well, one spare set of liner socks if its more than a week... Underwear? We don't need no steenkin underwear! Smartwool is nice if you're really concerned about the stinky. You can smell thru-hikers well before you can see them. Its inevitable, so why carry the extra weight? If you're on the AT and you're in one of the more trafficed parts, you're okay going alone, because you're never really alone. Its very much a community, especially thru-hikers. You'll get adopted by someone in a day or two.

If this is your first many-day trip, I'd strongly advise against Maine. A three day trip in Maine would be great. When you get to about a week is where things start going wrong, you get blisters and your joints hurt and you've packed the wrong things and you might also be four days away from any help. If you run into trouble in the Shenandoah, for example, you can hitch a ride on Skyline from any point on the trail within a few miles of walking. Maine is terribly lacking in outs. If everything goes well, no problems. If something goes wrong, you may not have the experience to get yourself out of it. Whatever you do, DON'T try the 100 mile wilderness as your first major trip. New Hampshire is more dramatic and in some ways a tougher hike, but the accomodations are much better for the inexperienced. My favourite section of the trail is still Vermont where the AT and the Long Trail are together. That's a nice one to two week trip depending on how fast you are. Once it turns east again it gets less interesting. Its also not crowded like the Whites or the Smokies can be. I think I could probably survive jumping a canopy loaded up at 1.5:1, but with ten jumps there ain't no way I'm actually going to TRY it.
