  1. I have no idea. I suppose knowing this couldn't happen to me is yet another advantage of dating someone so much younger than me, but I think it'd be pretty obvious regardless. Blues, Dave Since she is much younger than you, she's not your twin sister.... But are you sure she isn't your daughter???
  2. It probably is also because of the size, but I really have to "yank" the front risers to get a decent turn. Also the pressure is high, and if I get a decent turn going, it's not long before the pressure is too high and I have to let go. My steering lines are long enough. The tail doesn't get pulled down when I use my front risers. And yeah, I know I can get a flatter glide by using my rear risers, but I wouldn't mind that being the case "by default". The aspects I noted aren't major things. I still have lots of fun with the Spectre. I regularly do hops and pops from 13k, because they are so much fun. But if there is a canopy that suits me better, I will find it!
  3. If that's the case, I'll just have to buy a Velocity 79 then... Nah, j/k. If none of the canopies respond well to harness input, than so be it. At least I have tried at that point Also besides pure harness input, I expect there are differences on how they react to harness input together with other (toggle/riser) input.
  4. I currently fly a Spectre 210. Though it's a great canopy and I like it a lot, there are a few aspects of it that I would like different (in order of importance): better front riser control, reacting better/more to harness input and a somewhat better glide ratio. So I want to get a different (and new, so I get to choose colors ) canopy. I will demo a few different ones soon to see which one I like most. I will likely stay at the same size canopy (or maybe a Spectre 190); I don't want to change canopy type and size at the same time. One of the canopies I read and heard good things about is the PD Silhouette. It is sure on my list to demo. But since it is made out of ZP and F-111, I have a few concerns. I know that pure F-111 canopies degrade with jumps, and that the flight characteristics change with the degradation (less glide, worse flare etc). Now my question is if this also counts for the Silhouette, and if so, how much. What is an approx number of jumps one can put on the Silhouette (not counting line-set)? Also does a Silhouette looses it value faster because of this? (The only two Silhouettes in the classifieds show different things: $1000 w/ 650 jumps and $950 w/ 140 jumps) PS. Also feel free to recommend canopies I should demo ^^
  5. So if I visit the UK to jump, I have to purchase a BPA membership for $300.00 in order to jump? In the text you quote it says it is possible to get a 1 month temp membership. I doubt that will be $300.00
  6. Someone else was already dreaming about that: http://www.cafepress.com/buy/wii%20skydiving/-/pv_design_prod/p_storeid.196971325/pNo_196971325/id_24184297/opt_/pg_/c_/fpt_
  7. Has anyone tried to get Jumptrack running under wine? And more specifically was able to sync an altitrack to it with the USB to serial adapter? I'm guessing getting Jumptrack to run shouldn't be too hard, but getting it to sync might. L&B only provides drivers for Windows, and I don't know if the generic serial driver works. And even then I would need the vendor and product code... I couldn't find anything on the web and I tried emailing L&B, but they couldn't help either.
  8. I was at SkyDance today and asked. SkyDance does NOT accept Skyride certificates. So not all dz's in CA are "tainted".
  9. Blergghghgh (or however you write a barfing sound )... Sheesh, alcohol and sushi do not mix...
  10. It even gets worse... Now men are still needed to help the human species to procreate. But researchers are getting close to make men obsolete there also! By growing sperm from female bone marrow or stem cells, they can use that to impregnate females. Which in that case would always cause the offspring to also be female (no Y chromosome). One of many links: http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/health/article2445061.ece So have fun men, while we can! It will be a female only world in a few generations!
  11. Since I work for company that also makes/sells laptops (though not in the laptop division), I won't recommend you a brand. But in general: For what I read your daughter needs it for, there shouldn't be a problem with specifications for any new current laptop from a respectable brand. All current laptops should be able to do what you are planning to use it for. The only thing I would check for is if the laptop comes with Windows Vista, is to have 1 Gbyte of memory. Upgrading the memory would be the thing that would help you most anyway with what your daughter wants, instead of CPU, vid card etc. So with that said, she still has other things to look for that don't relate to "computing power" . And those things are dependent on what she prefers. Does she want a laptop that is light? Does she want a big screen? Is she okay with a "cramped" keyboard? Is battery life important? Is look important? Some of these "conflict" with each other. Wanting to have a long battery life and big screen doesn't go well with a light laptop for example. So I would recommend going to some shops that sells laptops, and just check them out for look and feel. See if she likes how it types, if the screen size is right etc. And don't worry about the computing specs of the laptops, since new laptops will be able to do what you wrote, even without upgrades. And after deciding on a brand, and maybe even a model, go compare some prices ^^ Online may be cheaper, but a local store could be better for service (not necessarily).
  12. Well, here's my update... AFF is so much better than tandem. I had such a blast. I booked 2 more jumps tomorrow About the the jump itself. Exit went well and got in a stable belly to earth position quickly. During the first circle of awareness, the left instructor signaled about my legs/feet position, since they were a little off. I corrected it. The rest of the free fall went as planned, with the practice pulls and such. I did lock on to the altimeter at a little less than 6500 instead of 6000. Well, I figured better early than late Wave and pull went good, and had a smooth opening. The canopy passed visual and controllability check. Made sure I knew where the landing area was, and I was quite close. So I "played", with doing turns and flares. Fast forward, I actually landed downwind and here's why: I started my landing pattern too high. I arrived at checkpoint 2 and turned crosswind and turned upwind at checkpoint 3. But I was too high to be able to land on the designated landing field. So I checked my options. There was another first time AFF jump student in the air, and he wasn't much higher in the air than me (the horizontal distance was plenty). He was either in or close to doing his landing pattern. So my first thought was of redoing a short version of my landing pattern. But I wasn't sure if that was safe with the other student doing his pattern (it probably could be done, but with my limited experience, I could not assess that). So I opted out for doing that. Second thought was to land in the next field upwind, but I wasn't sure if I would be able to go over the power lines. So I opted out on that as well. So I ended up doing a slowish 180, and landed downwind on the designated landing area. I was able to do a standing landing So I learned a whole lot today. A lot during ground school, and even more during the jump! Ohh, and I learned to bring and apply sunblock Kell
  13. Hey all, I wish it were Saturday, as Saturday will be my first AFF jump. And my colleagues are reminded at least once per hour that I wish it was Saturday ^^ I did 2 tandems so far and absolutely love it. My first instructor is lucky I signed a waiver about not suing him (or anyone for that matter), since I will most likely be broke soon. And it is his fault for not scaring me enough on the first jump Anyway, this forum is great. Already read a lot, and learned a lot. I'm looking forward to mingle in some conversations as soon as I get to know more! Kell
