The best reason I ever had to stop dating a girl was due to a progression of things she confessed to me... First: She was allergic to hormonal birth control Second: She was opposed to abortion Third: She admitted she'd be graduating vet school with $130,000 in student loans Final straw: She told me she wanted to be a stay-at-home mom. I never talked to her again. (She was also too tall, but I figure nobody's perfect ) Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)

Yes, it's been 5 years since this was posted, but it's too good for me to pass by without comment. I looked up the author, and after winning a Nobel in 1996 at the age of 73, she just released another book this year. Having found a few pieces of her work online, I'm gonna have to go find more. Right. Excellent point. One of my best friends told me that it isn't right to compare Palin with Thatcher because say what you will, Thatcher was well educated. As if her education made her beliefs and policies loftier than Palin's. Two people doing or thinking the same thing could be considered differently on the basis of whom they have read. An intelligent, educated person will deliberately arrive at well-considered opinions. A less intelligent, less educated person may arrive at the same opinion, but only by luck. Do you believe yourself to be of above average intelligence?
livendive replied to jcd11235's topic in Speakers Corner
Maybe SC has a following that is indeed higher than average IQ? Food for thought. Unlikely. My tested IQ is well above average, but I believe I would score well below average on some unmeasured elements that I consider to be a part of intelligence. For example, I'd consider creativity to be an important element of intelligence, and if one could objectively quantify it, I'd likely be found lacking. Which City Will Win the Olympic Games in 2016

What's wrong with the President playing cheerleader for the US in an attempt to attract a sporting event with economic implications? Personally, I don't see an unsuccessful effort as a negative for him. Better to try and fail than not try at all, especially when opponents are drooling for an opportunity to bash you over any failure. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" In other news, 47% of US households will pay no federal income taxes. How many do you think are appreciative of the rest of us covering their share of the bill? Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)

Yes, just as Clinton wanted both and got one. When Clinton's HC failed, he still raised taxes; the 2 are not correlated. I don't think you earn >250k as Obama states, you will not be affected other than your dislike of the thought that people might be getting HC who didn't previously have it. I don't know what gave you that idea. My girlfriend doesn't currently have health coverage, and I would like her to. You said, "We'll see how things go, but HC is on the way, followed by the tax cut expiration, followed by more tax increases. Me happy - you pissed - too bad". My question is, healthcare notwithstanding (I'm not sure how it became a part of this thread), why do you want to see increased taxes? Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" Yeah, I took a look and did not even see skydiving as one of their listed activities.....for now. Someone contacted my scheduler and told her these guys would be calling to schedule his tandem jump for next weekend (our last of the year). I've previously had skyride try to do this, but refuse to do business with them. I simply want to know who's on the other end of the phone when these people call. Me too. Explain how you "give" anything away if HC is passed. Explain how the taxing and spending process is linear. In the past 28 years or more, the absolute trend is that spending and taxing are inverse processes. You're the one who's ecstatic about increasing taxation and incoming healthcare. If you don't think the two are related, why do you want me to pay more taxes...just so I can't enjoy the fruits of my labor? Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)

tell that to sarah palin and joe the plumber. what's been done to those people on a personal level is disgusting. The nastiness exudes from all sides in the political arena, but when those two chose to jump in, they did so with full knowledge of the shit-slinging they were signing up for. If they didn't have at least that minimal knowledge, they're even dumber than they're made out to be. The only special treatment I saw either of them get was from Palin's panting droves who were enamored with her good looks. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)

I'm not "rich", but I did work my way thru college with full-time class loads and full-time work, and now work 60-70 hours a week, some of it at the expense of my health, to maintain a comfortable lifestyle. If I'm willing to work harder in order to earn more, why should I have to give that "more" to people who aren't so willing? Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)

Now? Source notwithstanding, the article was written in August 2008. I'm not denying that Obama gets some biased treatment from the press, but I wouldn't cite that particular article as proof. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)

I only jump Icarus/Precision canopies now, and student's hands are out of the toggles by 1500' except on progression jumps (which I haven't done in a couple years). I've had students help me land a couple hundred tandems (500s, 425s, & 384s), and for first-time jumpers, I think the risks of doing so outweigh the potential rewards. This is a good thread, and I'm pleasantly surprised to see so many participants, given the way mistakes typically get shushed in this industry. We can't learn from others if the stories aren't told, yet that seems to be the standard due to fears about losing ratings. A little over 9 years ago, my left shoulder dislocated as I reached back to pull. One auxiliary drogue release later, I found a popped right toggle on an old 500 (my only popped toggle in a few hundred jumps on canopies with riser stowed brakes). It took me a revolution or two to get left toggle unstowed with my right hand and point us at the dz. Due to the toggle pressure of those canopies, and my student’s size (~140 lbs), I didn’t think he’d be able to flare the whole thing on his own, so I gave him the primaries and took the flare toggles in my right hand, figuring getting the flares to the bottom of my sternum while he fully flared the primaries would have to suffice. I called for the flare a little high, thinking I’d likely have to go into drill sergeant mode to get a full flare. I was wrong; he buried them immediately, bringing us to a somewhat yawing stop around 20’ up. Then he let them up and we crashed pretty hard (with the lower connections still fully tightened). He seemed ok at the time, but went to the hospital for x-rays that night that revealed a compressed vertebra in his neck. I felt terrible. Thankfully, that's the only student I've injured. I went and had a couple surgeries on the shoulder to ensure it would never happen again, and it hasn't since 2001. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)
