We need to cut some serious spending, and remove some serious tax evasion loopholes. Whether its Republicans proposing only spending cuts, or Democrats proposing only tax increases, both sides look dishonest. It took excessive spending and insufficient tax income from both parties to get us to this point, and it's going to take major concessions on both fronts to right the ship. How many of the 2008 and potential 2012 GOP candidates did or still work for Fox News? Santorum, Gingrich, Palin, Huckabee…any others? How many of the 2008 DNC candidates do they have under contract? Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)

Apparently nobody cares about your classless shit-ass thread. It was just mildly amusing, but now it's downright funny! Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)

Cutting off all ties with a family member v. have you done it?
livendive replied to npgraphicdesign's topic in The Bonfire
Both birth parents. Father not by choice, but I only saw him once between my 6th birthday and his 30 years later. My mother was my choice, and I've seen her maybe half a dozen times since I was 13 years old, at family funerals, weddings, whatever. On the other hand I have a wonderful loving relationship with my "mom" and "dad" (technically my aunt and uncle). -
Subsequent years can be kinda tough too...my 22 year old daughter led us through a significant drug problem from 17-20, with all the fun corresponding side-issues, and is moving to another continent in August. She doesn't seem to understand my concerns over the 5,500 miles that will soon separate us. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)

What is your hard deck for exiting with a tandem? (non emergency)
livendive replied to ShotterMG's topic in Tandem Skydiving
I've gotten out at 6,000 and have boarded with no expectation of anything above 7,000. If the plan is full altitude, I give my student a choice on anything between 7 and 9 (e.g. "we can ride the plane down for a full refund or we can skydive from 8,000 with a shorter freefall, your choice"). That said, I won't get out below the comfort level of any other TI on the plane, so if one guy chickens out at 8k, we all ride it down. It just feels like it would be unprofessional and potentially actionable if anything went wrong. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew) -
Torture did NOT lead to finding Osama bin Laden

When a woman is raped, what generally takes longer to heal, her body or her mind? Mental/emotional trauma can be FAR more injurious and longer lasting than phyical trauma, so why would it be ok when the latter is not? Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew) -
Would you also put monitoring software on their computers to ensure they’re not going to bad web sites? Put a GPS in their car to ensure they break no speed limits? Send an auditor every year to make sure they tell the truth on their taxes? How do you decide which laws they should be arbitrarily held to a higher standard on, and what constitutional amendment do you propose to work around the whole probable cause, warrantless search issue? Lost Prairie Boogie 2011 - July 23rd - August 1st
livendive replied to Skootz's topic in Events & Places to Jump
We're still in the "maybe" camp, depending on how our schedule is looking and what flavors emerge in this drama stew. I will say that we're seriously considering it, which is more than I could the past few. And I'd be honored if it works out. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew) -

Do politicians EVER do anything for the greater good?
livendive replied to shropshire's topic in Speakers Corner
How about next year the entire government payroll will be equal to 20% of the budget surplus, and the other 80% must be applied to the national debt? How would that play out? Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew) -
I'd have questioned that story more if I cared, but I don't. If he was shot in the head by a sniper while taking a dump, that'd be fine by me. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)

Do politicians EVER do anything for the greater good?
livendive replied to shropshire's topic in Speakers Corner
Rarely. They have to get re-elected to do anything at all, and the greater good is not typically grounds for re-election. People tend to vote selfishly, and our elected representatives know that if they take care of our selfish interests, we'll take care of theirs. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew) -
...or Obamas chances of getting re-elected I think it has improved those chances somewhat, but it certainly doesn't make the outcome a slam-dunk by any means. Blues Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)

Why is it morally right to euthanize an rabid dog, but morally wrong to bathe him in the washing machine on heavy duty cycle? Humane = moral, inhumane = immoral. Pretty simple distinction in my book, and one I think you'll find plenty of examples for in our society (see death row case law). Of course I doubt you'll agree, but maybe you can find some other aspect to get all negative nancy over. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)

Oh course the navy Seal team did a fantastic job. Didn't think I needed to say that. Since they probably don't read my comments on this site, who do I need to say that for? My comments so far are for those whose knee-jerk reactions are over the top if they think this is going to matter in the next election. I'm also concerned about any retaliation, aren't you? BTW, I think it's pretty sick that people would go out in the middle of the night, head to the White House or Times Square and rejoice. Reminds me of the people in the ME who were rejoicing when the WTC was hit. People are posting their opinions of the action in this thread, and until this one, your's seeemed pretty negative. As for the people celebrating the kill...meh, I can understand the emotion, but it's not my style. I'm glad the task was carried out successfully. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" Victims of 9/11 include the population of the United States (and other countries, for that matter), not just the immediate relatives of the people who died. And the whole martyrdom thing is kind of a dead herring, because it's not like bin laden was lacking in motivational ability while alive. In fact, it was probably his strongest ability. Personally, I sometimes also use the null to validate or disprove an opinion. Bin Laden was the man behind 9/11/01. We can a) go after him for whatever "justice" we can effect, or b) let him go due to fears about martyrdom. The flaccidity required by the second is abhorrent to me. Once the team arrived on site to effect his capture, they found themselves engaged in a firefight. They could a) go forward with the kill option on the order or b) run away, clapping coconuts together. In both of these decisions, I think "a" was the better option. I love your comments thus far in this thread. Three posts about how this won't help Obama get re-elected, one suggesting it may have been bin Laden's own guys that killed him, and one warning of retaliation. Would it hurt that much to just say "nice job everyone"? This was a nice accomplishment for all involved, I wish it hadn't taken so long, but I'm glad it's done. Romans 2:14-15 Director, Tech Pubs: “OK, we’re a religion. Gimme some text that says join us and obey our laws or be damned for all eternity” Tech writer: “Done! I took all the stuff that the species must do to survive, then added in some gobbledygook about food and sex to keep it interesting” Reviewer: “But, if that’s what humans are doing anyhow, where’s the compulsion to join us?” Tech writer: “That’s outside my paygrade” Director, Tech Pubs: “We’re on a deadline people! Emphasize the “join us” part and explain that obeying the laws “just because” won’t spare them eternal damnation!” Tech writer: “Done!” Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!"
