Anyone looking forward to "Enders Game" the movie?
livendive replied to turtlespeed's topic in The Bonfire
That is what OSC said in his interview at the end of both those books. will I be disappointed if I read Speaker for the Dead? Not at all. I just got done with Speaker for the Dead for the third time, though I'm not bothering to revisit Xenocide or Children of the Mind (once was enough for me on those). According to OSC, the movie is a mashup of Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow because the movie format needed the outside perspective of Bean to tell the story (too much of Ender's Game is internal dialogue). And yes, very much looking forward to it! Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew) -
While I can see how what I wrote was poorly stated and could easily be read that way, my actual beef is with the concept of detaining and searching without warrant or probable cause in violation of the 4th amendment. Lawrocket's quote of the judge's ruling states this was the case in 14 of the 19 cases before her. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)

What I have stated: - Police are stopping and frisking people without probable cause. - A judge has ruled the actions are disproportionately and unconstitutionally directed at minorities. - The plaintiffs have claimed that they were doing nothing wrong at the time and some could not be reasonably connected to suspicion of a crime. - Detaining and frisking citizens without a warrant or clear probable cause violates the 4th amendment. In which of those statements do you believe I'm lying? Edit to add: Okay, I see I also said that the police were targeting victims on the basis of neighborhood. I'll admit this is debatable if it can be shown that they detain and search a similar number of people who are digging for their car keys or waiting for a friend in nicer neighborhoods. You do realize the (prevailing) claims of the plaintiffs do not match your position, right? I'm going to go out on a limb and wager the judge who ruled it unconstitutional is more informed on the specifics than you. That said, I agree with DaVinci that racial profiling shouldn't have even be a necessary argument. The practice is in violation of the 4th regardless of the color of the victims. Did you read the examples in the article I linked? Maybe this, or this will help clear things up. I'm also opposed to Driving While Black stops, but Breathing While Black is beyond the pale. Have a warrant, witness a violation, or very clear and defensible probable cause, or leave them alone. "He looked like he was thinking about committing a misdemeanor" is bs, and no grounds for detaining and searching someone. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)

No, ignoring the 2nd amendment is just as wrong. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)

Past water management in the Central Valley has been so ridiculously stupid that the delta smelt should be a non-issue. A rights management system that allows a guy enough water to operate a trout farm in the middle of the freaking desert so long as he can prove he has before (by taking groundwater), and wailing and gnashing of teeth any time anyone suggests a bit of reason and conservation. Massive water intensive crops, unregulated overdraft of groundwater, a Colorado River that really shouldn't be called that anymore (as it doesn't reach the ocean), zero investment in infrastructure, and a whole lot of crying by people unwilling to live in synergy with the environment they chose. At least San Diego is propping up a desalination plant. The rest of California going to have to do that and more recycling and probably still have another standoff with the Arizona National Guard in 40-50 years. I'd worry about the Columbia River, but I don't see how you could cost effectively transport it that far...maybe an underwater aquaduct just offshore? Alaskan fisheries and California water are probably the two most poorly managed natural resources in the US in the last 40 years, though there may be a logging region in contention somewhere too. At least the Alaskans are trying now. I wouldn't say the same about California. As environmentally conscious as the state purports to be, that's one subject on which most of the state deserve an F. I'm reminded of Sam Kinison's thoughts on starving people in Ethiopia... Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)

I can't believe we have people defending the practice of detaining and frisking people for no other reason than they happen to be in a bad neighborhood. What part of is so easily misconstrued that it justifies "Let me see your papers, and touch you all over. No, I haven't seen you doing anything wrong, but I have a badge, so bend over." If that's the atitude of Americans, what's the complaint about gun control, or NSA snooping, or the Patriot Act? Anyone who feels safer with the police having that kind of authority has already waived their right to liberty. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)

I just treat male and female students identically, with one purely verbal exception...I tell guys that clearing their legstraps of anything sensitive to crushing forces is their responsibility, not mine. Beides, that, if it would be creepy for a student of one gender (or me), I don't do it with a student of either gender. Tandem jumping is an intimate activity, there's not getting around that, but it's no excuse to be a douchebag. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)

I read he had a long-standing, unrequited "crush" on the girl. It sounds like violence and force were the only way he was going to get anywhere with her. Basically, he went off the deep end and took a couple people with him. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)

It would seem to me that anyone with even the slightest understanding of the 4th amendment would not be able to defend this with a straight face. It almost begs to invoke Godwin in the first post. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)

I have an AR. I don't need it. I haven't shot it in a year. If I were the sort of person who had an interest in killing a lot of people (I'm not), I can think of a lot more efficient ways than simply shooting them one by one. If I were reduced to that option, the difference between handguns and a rifle would be pretty small. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)

I qualified with "on the surface". I didn't see the part where he left the conflict to get a gun and came back. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)

I once had to take my wife to a hospital to get checked out after a car accident. With the name Sacred Heart, I knew it had started as a Catholic hospital, but while we were there, we learned that they do prayers over the PA at the top of each hour. The last thing I want in a medical crisis is the services of a doctor who thinks prayer might be the solution, so we will not be revisiting that particular hospital, nor the local "Our Lady of Lourdes" for the same reason. What a waste of time and energy that could be better spent employing scientifically sound methods. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)

2013 - A Year of Weather Extreme in the US
livendive replied to lawrocket's topic in Speakers Corner
I would say that an average of 20 more rainy days per year than 6 decades ago constitutes a trend (if true), but that's not even really my point. What I'd like to see is rebuilding efforts and new development take into account the potential future impacts instead of just throwing good money after bad. Cedar Rapids, IA and Napa, CA are good examples of cities trying to reduce their vulnerability to future floods. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew) -

I haven't chased down their sources, but an interesting article regardless (and it seems more concerned with trends). http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/story/2013/06/26/f-climate-change-flooding-weather-preparation.html Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew) -
Seven shot dead at US army base in Texas
livendive replied to masterblaster72's topic in Speakers Corner
Military person shooting military targets. Doesn't sound like terrorism to me. Treason and murder? Sure. Blues, Dave Funny thing to me is how he is basically saying he defected to enemy forces without openly renouncing his position in the Army. He then used that position to attack and kill US forces. His own opening statement in his court martial shows he believed it was enemy action in an ongoing military conflict. Doesn't that mean his victim should be considered combat casualties rather than victims of workplace violence? Do you want to be the guy who admits that the enemy successfully attacked our military on our shores? As a lone actor, workplace violence is both technically accurate and less damaging to our reputation / encouraging to our enemies. Far better than most propaganda. 2013 - A Year of Weather Extreme in the US
livendive replied to lawrocket's topic in Speakers Corner
And Seattle had zero measurable rain in July. And Alaskan king salmon are dying from a heat wave before they can spawn. And 716 overnight miminimum temp records fell during a US wide heat wave in July. And Kiev saw 100 degrees F, Death Valley 129, Greenland 79 (highest ever) and Salt Lake City had its warmest July on record (the top 7 have all occurred since 2002). Weather is weather and relatively meaningless on a snapshot basis. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew) -
